Cynopsis: Kids!

Mattel is launching Stardoll by Barbie, a new line of collectible Barbie dolls based on Stockholm-based Stardoll, the girl-targeted virtual fashion and gaming community, in the US this month.  This is the first time that online fashion dolls from Stardoll have been translated into a physical doll line. The Stardoll by Barbie line will feature eight new fashion dolls, inspired by Stardoll avatars and based on four of the most popular virtual Stardoll stores.  The dolls will be packaged posed like their avatar and feature details, such as rooted eyelashes, a unique face and body sculpt, and distinct style, and each comes with a gift card for a complimentary membership on, Stardollars to spend on the site and free exclusive virtual gifts.  The dolls will retail for $20.99 and accessory packs will go for $15.99.


Wildbrain Entertainment, a DHX Media company, inks seven new licensing deals for its preschool/family series Yo Gabba Gabba!  New licensees include:

  • Freeze Clothing has created a line of signature t-shirts and hoodies for newborns to adults, which is available at mid-tier retailers now and will be available at mass retailers in spring, 2012.
  • Funko is developing a line of Yo Gabba Gabba! collectible toys, which will be available at specialty, department stores and mass retailers nationwide in April 2012.
  • Nyko signs on to develop game accessories and an all-new DS docking station/alarm clock for Yo Gabba Gabba!, which will be available at retail in late 2012.
  • Volcom will develop a limited edition line of apparel, including full zip hoodies, full-face beanies and socks that will be sold at specialty sports chains and department stores in Q4 2012.
  • Planet Sox is developing a line of Yo Gabba Gabba! socks for toddlers, kids and juniors, which will be available at specialty stores, shoe store chains, mid-tier and mass retailers in early 2012.
  • Trumpette will develop a line of Yo Gabba Gabba! infant and toddler socks, which will be available at specialty and in department stores in 2012.
  • Press Pass, Inc., is developing a line of Yo Gabba Gabba! trading cards that will debut at retail in February 2012.

Bandai America teams with Warner Bros. Consumer Products for Bandai’s new ThunderCats 6-inch figure line, which is based on the new re-imagined ThunderCats animated series from Warner Bros. Animation and airs on Cartoon Network.  Set to launch in spring 2012, the new 6-inch line of ThunderCats action figures are articulated and detailed and include the new Tygra and Cheetara figures.  At the same time, Lion-O and Mumm-Ra will be the first figures available in the new 6-inch Classic Series line.  Additionally, Bandai will continue to offer fans the popular ThunderCats classic 8-inch line in a limited edition capacity.

The Collective partners with NANCO, a supplier to the amusement industry, on a line of toys inspired by The Annoying Orange web-based series.  The Joester Loria Group, the licensing agent for The Annoying Orange brand, brokered the deal on behalf of The Collective.  The new product line will include Annoying Orange plush toys with a range of characters, facial expressions, and sizes and featuring a variety of sound chips with popular puns and sayings taken from the show.  The line of Annoying Orange products debuts at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions trade show (I.A.A.P.A.) in Orlando, Florida this week.  The initial product launch will be followed up by full-size Annoying Orange basketballs and additional line expansions including Pear, Midget Apple, Marshmallow, Grandpa Lemon, and Passion Fruit.


Marvel Entertainment has entered into a licensing deal with AMSCAN to create a branded Marvel Halloween Costume Feature Shop at AMSCAN’s 800+ Party City stores, which will debut for Halloween 2012.  The Marvel shop will include costumes and accessories based on Marvel’s Super Heroes and two upcoming Marvel feature films, The Avengers (May 4, 2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man (July 3, 2012).


Strawberry Shortcake gets a new friend, and band mate, this weekend when the new American Greetings character Cherry Jam makes her worldwide debut on the CGI animated Strawberry Shortcake’s Berry Bitty Adventures this Saturday, November 19 at 9a on The Hub.  In addition to joining the series, Cherry Jam’s new music video, Anything is Possible, will also premiere on The Hub on Saturday.  Hasbro is set to introduce toys featuring Cherry Jam for holiday 2012.

Pixie Hollow Games, a new CG animated special, premieres this Saturday, November 19 at 7p on Disney Channel.  A DisneyToon Studios production, Pixie Hollow Games’ voiceover cast features the network’s stars including Brenda Song (The Suite Life on Deck), Jason Dolley (Good Luck Charlie), Tiffany Thornton (So Random!), and Zendaya (Shake It Up), among others.

In Canada, Shaw Cable systems adds family-targeted channels to its Family Pack lineup with the launch of Astral’s Disney XD in standard and HD as well as Family Channel HD and Disney Junior.  Shaw is offering customers a free preview running now through January 10, 2012.  Additionally, Shaw Video On Demand content will also debut the family content in December.  The new channels and VOD content will join nine existing channels as part of the Family Pack (Canadian $5/month) with the Shaw Plan Personalizer.  Customers can also access the new standard definition channels via Digital TV, while the HD channels will join the HD Plus package.

Kideo, a creator of personalized and branded video products, release the first of a new interactive and personalized iPad line of apps based on stories from the PBS Kids literacy-based series Between the Lions.  The first iPad app to debut as part of the Kideo Classic Tales series is The Three Little Pigs 35-page e-book, which features six games and educational activities, is available for download now ($7.99.).  Christopher Cerf, a creator of the Between the Lions series and well-known for his work on Sesame Street, worked closely with Kideo on the development of The Three Little Pigs interactive e-book.  In addition to being able to listen to the story read by the narrator or customized by the reader, family member or friend, the e-book app can also be personalized using PixFusion‘s photo-personalized technology so that the image of your choice can be featured throughout the story.  Between the Lions is a production of WGBH Boston, Sirius Thinking, and Mississippi Public Television.

D3Publisher (D3P) and Nickelodeon release the first performance-based Victorious video games, Victorious: Time to Shine on Kinect for Xbox 360 and Victorious: Hollywood Arts Debut for Nintendo DS in North America.  Based on Nickelodeon’s live-action series Victorious take players to Hollywood Arts High School where they can either star in their own music video or in a showcase alongside Tori Vega and the rest of the cast.  Victorious: Time to Shine is developed by High Voltage Software, and Victorious: Hollywood Arts Debut is developed by Behaviour Interactive.  Both Victorious video games are rated E for Everyone by the ESRB.

Kaboom!, an all-ages imprint of Boom! Studios, in partnership with Peanuts Worldwide, launches a monthly Peanuts comic book series, based on the comic strip and characters created by Charles Schulz, with the release of issue #1 this January.  A special issue #0 is available in stores now for just $1.  The new Peanuts comic book series features new original stories.  Peanuts #1 ($3.99) was written and drawn by Charles Schulz with additional stories by Vicki Scott, Paige Braddock, Shane Houghton and Matt Whitlock.  The publisher recently released the first Peanuts graphic novel, Happiness Is A Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown.


The Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop and E-Line Media, a publisher of game-based learning products, launch the Second Annual National STEM Video Game Challenge, which aims to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning. Students and educators can enter their original video game concepts and designs in four categories, middle school, high school, college, and educators at  New sub-categories being introduced this year are the PBS KIDS stream, which invites entrants from all four categories to design math-based video games for kids in pre-k through grade four, and the Sesame Street stream, which is open only to the college and educators categories to design a STEM video game for kids in pre-K through first grade. You can find out more about the categories and subcategories at the website.  Sponsors for the National STEM Video Game Challenge this year are the AMD Foundation, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting/PBS KIDS Ready To Learn Initiative, Entertainment Software Association and Xbox 360.  Outreach partners this year include the American Library Association, American Association of School Librarians, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, BrainPop, George Lucas Education Foundation, The Girl Scouts of the USA, One Economy, and The International Game Developers Association.


Turner CN Enterprises (TCNE) names Agne Zurkeviciute as Territory Manager for Russia and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).  Zurkeviciute, who will split her time between the London and Moscow offices, will work with the team to grow TCNE’s consumer products business in the emerging markets.  She will mange brand development and commercial opportunities for TCNE’s key brands and properties across Russia and CIS including Ben 10, Bakugan, Generator Rex, Puppy in My Pocket and Zoobles.  Most recently Zurkeviciute worked in marketing for Voira Kotryna, a toy retailer, wholesaler and exporter in the Baltics, which has subsidiaries in Russia and Belarus.
