Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 14, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The Arena Football League has a new home, having locked in a two-year deal with CBS Sports Network that makes the network the national television partner of the league. The channel will feature 19 regular-season games throughout the 2013 season, pluss two playoff games. CBS will then air ArenaBowl XXVI on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 at 1p. As part of the deal, CBS Sports Network will televise the League’s Saturday night game of the week in prime time. The national package kicks off on March 23, 2013.
On the Air
ESPN’s telecast of the Steelers’ win over the Chiefs on MNF won the night among all television programs on broadcast or cable in all key male and adult demos. The game drew an 8.2 US household rating with 12,824,000 million viewers, according to Nielsen. In Kansas City, the game delivered a 15.1 rating on ESPN and a 19.1 rating on KMBC-ABC, for a combined 34.3 rating in the market. In Pittsburgh, the game delivered a 14.2 rating on ESPN and a 31.3 rating on WTAE-ABC, for a combined 45.5 rating in the market.
NBC’s SNF broadcast of the Texans win over the Bears drew 20.9 million viewers to the network, according to Nielsen, matching last year’s Week 10 SNF game featuring the Patriots/Jets. The household rating of 12.4/19 for Sunday’s game is was off pace by 4% although the broadcast easily won the night facing original network programming. Top markets included Chicago with a 38.0/53, followed by Houston, Milwaukee, Indianapolis and New Orleans.
Jim Bell is officially leaving Today and will now serve as the full-time Executive Producer of NBCUniversal’s coverage of the Olympic Games. Bell reports to NBC Sports Group Chairman Mark Lazarus and recently served as the Executive Producer of the 2012 London Olympics.
Cartoon Network revealed that Turner Sports NBA analyst Shaquille O’Neal will return to host the third annual Hall of Game Awards, where he will join America’s Got Talent host Nick Cannon for the show. The February telecast lets viewers vote for their favorite sports stars and sports moments of the year. Last year 2.6 million viewers tuned in and 102 million votes were cast online at HallOfGame.com. The event will once again be produced by IMG Media, with Time Inc. Sports Group’s SI KIDS franchise serving again as an official media partner.
NASCAR announced the 2013 schedule for the NASCAR Nationwide Series, which will include a trip to Mid-Ohio, a 2.4-mile, 15-turn road course in Lexington-for the first time in series history. Next season’s schedule includes six standalone race dates: Iowa Speedway (June 8 and Aug. 3), Chicagoland Speedway (July 21), Kentucky Speedway (Sept. 21), Road America and Mid-Ohio. Daytona International Speedway, of course, hosts the season opener on Feb. 23.
FOX Deportes announced that October ratings saw the channel finish the month as the top Spanish-language cable sports network in total viewers and adults 18-49, with viewership up 15% among adults 18-49 compared to a year ago. The network’s single biggest day part increase since 2011 came during late night (up 26%), according to Nielsen.
In weekend college football programming, each of the top three teams contending for the championship game will see national broadcasts this Saturday. Kansas State plays Baylor at 8p on ESPN, while Oregon faces Stanford at 8p airs on ABC. Notre Dame anchors NBC’s programming, as Wake Forest visits South Bend at 3:30p.
ESPN will be broadcasting from the Jax Brewery parking lot in the French Quarter during Super Bowl week, according to The Times-Picayune. The network will camp at that location from Jan. 28, 2013 to Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3 with more than 120 hours of live programming on deck. CBS, which is broadcasting the game, will park at Jackson Square. The report states that ESPN will construct two outdoor sets, including a 40×40-foot main stage and a 24×24-foot second stage as well as a demo field, two pod camera locations, and a “flycam” suspended 30 feet in the air.
SNY offers Mets Hot Stove Special Report: R.A. Dickey Announcement tonight at 6:30p. The special will offer live coverage of the 2012 CY Young Award announcement and feature a live interview with the Mets All-Star pitcher.
With the NHLapparently down for a while longer, channels continue to beef up programming with other hockey content.
- NBC Sports Network is offering more college hockey games this season than ever before with 24 games that include contests from the ECAC, Hockey East, the University of Denver, the University of Notre Dame and the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Up next, No. 4 Cornell hosts No. 13 Harvard this Friday at 7:30p.
- Comcast SportsNet Chicago announced that it will replay three Chicago Blackhawks Classics telecasts beginning Friday, November 16 at 8p. The programs will be hosted by Pay Boyle.
- MSG Networks is expanding its slate of KHL game, running five contests this month, starting on Wednesday, November 14 at 1p, followed by an encore presentation of the game at 9p. All five games will be telecast on a same day delay and, with the exception of the final game, will have an encore showing in primetime later that night.

CBS Sports is teaming with Queen and Helmut VonLichten to create a re-mix of the iconic rock classic We Will Rock You with The NFL on CBS’s theme music. The mash-up features “symphonic elements that add a forceful and dramatic accompaniment to one of rock music’s most iconic songs.” The new anthem began running on the Network and will continue throughout the 2012-13 NFL on CBS season.
ESPN inked an agreement with The Los Angeles Athletic Club (LAAC) to serve as the exclusive multimedia and announcement partner of the John R. Wooden Award, which honors the men’s collegiate basketball player of the year. Wendy’s will serve as the presenting sponsor of the Award as well as ESPN’s season-long coverage. ESPN’s agreement creates increased content across multiple platforms including the Pre-Season Top 50 candidates list, the Midseason Top 25 candidates and the 10-player Wooden Award All American Team.
Time Warner Cable and The Madison Square Garden Company announced a long-term marketing partnership that will align TWC’s “Enjoy Better” brand campaign with concerts and sporting events that are held at the venue. As part of the partnership, TWC will now be the naming partner for the Concert Series at Madison Square Garden, as well as an Official Partner of the New York Knicks and the New York Rangers.
TCU announced a 12-year extension to its multimedia rights partnership with IMG College, which is now in its seventh year.

The NBA and Sprint tipped off 2013 NBA All-Star Balloting during a special event in Houston, which will host the game this season. NBA All-Star Balloting will allow fans to vote daily for their favorite players as starters for the 2013 NBA All-Star Game in Houston. For the first time ever, NBA fans can vote via social media networks, including Facebook and Twitter, as well as via Sina Weibo and Tencent QQ in China. Twitter voting will allow fans to tweet a vote for one player each day throughout the All-Star balloting period. The tweet must include a player’s first and last name, along with hash tag #NBABALLOT. Facebook voting will allow fans to fill out one full ballot (three frontcourt and two guards from each conference) per day, through a custom application on Facebook.
