Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 13, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Members of the Senate are joining the FCC in a call to end broadcast blackouts. Sens. John McCain and Richard Blumenthal introduced a bill – the Furthering Access and Networks for Sports (FANS) Act – that would remove the antitrust exemption for any sports league that games available over the Internet when it is not available via TV through broadcasters or other pay TV services, even if they have to charge a fee to do so. The bill follows former acting FCC chairwoman Mignon Clyburn’s recent proposal to eliminate the FCC’s rule that blocks a cable or satellite provider from carrying a game when the local TV broadcast is blocked out because of poor attendance.
On the ratings front, the New Orleans Saints’ takedown of the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football ranked as the most-watched primetime program, nabbing an average of of 21.1 million viewers for NBC with a 12.3/20, according to live plus same day national data from Nielsen. That figure marks the eighth time an NBC NFL telecast broke the 20 million viewer benchmark this season. Those numbers rank as the second highest-rated college football game of the 2013 season, behind CBS Sports’ coverage of Alabama-Texas A&M. Through nine weeks of the 2013 SEC on CBS season, CBS Sports is averaging a national household rating/share of 4.0/9 and 6.4 million viewers to rank as the highest-rated and most-watched, respectively, for SEC football games on CBS at this point in the season since the Network began airing primarily an SEC-only schedule in 2001.

IMG is expected to fetch around $2.5 billion.

NASCAR revealed that during the NASCAR Nationwide Series race in Phoenix this past weekend it surpassed more than five million competition miles across its three national series on Sunoco Green E15, a biofuel blended with 15% American Ethanol made from corn. The five million miles have been accumulated across practice, qualifying and racing laps dating to 2011 when the biofuel was introduced to the sport. In 2011, NASCAR formed a partnership with Sunoco and the American Ethanol industry in an effort to reduce emissions of the fuel used across its three national series.
