The proof of just how effective TBS‘ massive social media campaign to promote the return of Conan O’Brien was in the punch of an impressive ratings debut, as Conan drew an unheard of 3.3 million 18-49 year old viewers on Monday, besting both Leno and Letterman. The campaign utilized every social platform known to man, from YouTube to Foursquare to Facebook, including a GPS-enabled app that allows fans to follow the Conan blimp’s exact location via Google Maps. It turns out most of Conan’s more than 1.8 million Twitter followers still do watch TV.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
With more rival tablets hitting the marketplace, Amazon announced it will start paying publishers a larger share of the revenue generated from magazine and newspaper sales on the Kindle. From Dec. 1, publishers will now earn 70% of the take minus delivery charges, a split popularized by Apple’s iTunes store. (The company did not disclose how much it was taking previously.)
 
Time Warner Cable launched its “Look Back” feature in several markets after a year of trials including New York, New England, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin and parts of Texas. “Look Back” allows you to go back within a 3-day window to watch shows you may have missed without the use of a DVR. Shows are available immediately after they air.
 
Google has added a visual search feature dubbed Instant Previews that allows users to pull up a visual snapshot of search results by clicking on the magnifying glass icon. The handy tool, which will no doubt reaffirm the power of logos online, allows you to quickly scan results and pinpoint what you’re looking for without having to read irrelevant text.

Online movie discovery site MovieClips.com raised $3 million in series A financing led by Shasta Ventures and First Round Capital with Felicis Ventures, SoftTech VC and Angel Investors also participating.
 
AdGent 007 has relaunched as AdGent Digital with a new website and a new mission statement to create proprietary customizable, white label ad supported social media platforms for premium publishers and advertisers.
 
Founders Space Cofounder Steve Hoffman announced the launch of a new Roundtable meeting of the minds in Silicon Valley, to be held Nov. 17 in Palo Alto. The gatherings invite founders and venture capitalists to brainstorm and share knowledge on start-up issues.

U.S. Online display impressions increased at a healthy clip during Q3, according to ComScore, with total display ad impressions recording jumping 22% from a year earlier to nearly 1.3 trillion total ads. Facebook.com led all online publishers in Q3 2010 with 297 billion display ad impressions, representing 23.1% market share. AT&T was the biggest advertiser, followed by Scottrade, Inc. and Verizon.

Despite Microsoft’s decision to shutter Massive last month, in-game advertising is still a growth industry with players such as Double Fusion booking 300% more campaigns than a year ago, according to Mediaweek.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Another suitor has Yahoo in its crosshairs – private equity firm KKR & Co. – according to a report in the NYPost. The interest is separate than that expressed by a group of private equity companies working with AOL on a possible merger.
 
Zoran, provider SD and HD set-top box processor platforms for the digital entertainment market, has joined the MoCA home entertainment networking alliance as an Associate level member.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Gannett subsidiary PointRoll and Compete are releasing a study today which found that expandable ads (the ones that expand when you wave your mouse over them) significantly outperformed non-expandable ads across both brand and direct response success measurements. Expandable ads outperformed non-expandables in driving brand searches by an average of 39% and by as much as 155%, depending on the campaign. For driving key purchase indicators, expandables outperformed non-expandables by an average of 43% and by as much as 115%, according to the study. Campaigns were selected from Automotive, CPG and Financial Services verticals spanning 2009-2010.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
YouTube launched a new TV viewing app for Android called YouTube Remote that allows you to navigate the YouTube Leanback interface from your phone. The app allows you to log onto your YouTube account and browse through, pause, play and skip YouTube videos on a Google TV-enabled television or computer. 
 
A major update for the Radio Disney App for the iPhone and iPod touch (over 1 million downloads) has launched utilizing the iOS4’s multitasking functionality to allow listeners to stream Radio Disney while using other features and apps on their device. The ad-supported app is free to download but exclusive videos, podcasts, lyrics and other content is also available for a one-time charge of $2.99.
 
If you bring computer home with you for the holidays, you can take advantage of a new offer from Google ­- the company is picking up the tab for in-flight Wi-Fi on AirTran, Delta and Virgin America from Nov. 20 to Jan. 2 to promote its Chrome web browser.

Real-time digital Q&A service ChaCha has hired Springhead, LLC Founder and President Greg Siefert to be its Chief Technology Officer. The company announced record volumes and audiences in Oct., reaching 18.5 million uniques online and 3.2 million users via mobile.
 
iTV company Ensequence upped Michael Kelley to SVP/Programming and Advertising, responsible for working with networks and developing strategic advertising partnerships. Andy Addis, SVP/Service Providers will now handle sales efforts for service providers. Kevin Hurst has also been promoted to VP/Marketing and Product Management.
 
Mark Snow has joined CTAM as VP and GM, overseeing direct marketing services for the organization’s multifaceted national Cable Mover initiative.


 

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
The middleman in the TV business is about to feel the threat of an up and comer. Media center maker Boxee finally starts shipping the Boxee Box by D-Link today and the two are hosting a big shindig in New York to celebrate. Boxee has also struck a partnership with online video platform Ooyala to give publishers a way distribute and monetize HTTP-formatted TV content to the device using its Backlot TV video solution. This means that indie programmers will now have an easy way to get their shows seen on television either for free with ads, as a subscription or as PPV offerings. The system operates a full paywall with TV Everywhere-style authentication that is seamless for the producer. Now at $200, the Boxee Box is not going to exactly fly off the shelves. And it’s just one of a dozen devices designed to bring broadband content to your home set; even Apple has yet to drag its Apple TV box beyond the “hobby” stage. But consider the Boxee Box an important evolutionary step that will reignite much enthusiasm among indie producers and tech-savvy early adopters. Boxee, which counts about 1.4 million PC and Mac users today, sees its brightest future in having its software pre-installed on broadband-connected TVs, Blu-ray players and game consoles. If it can manage to become as ubiquitous as, say, the Netflix streaming app, things could get interesting. The United Football League (UFL) is the first Ooyala publisher to begin “boxcasting,” distributing a full slate of league games through a UFL Boxee app.
