Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 9, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.
Photo and video content consumption on mobile devices is on the rise, according to the latest data from Flurry Analytics. Flurry found that the Photo & Video app category has grown by 89% in terms of monthly minutes spent per active user from October 2011 to March 2012. Flurry also says that social video sharing apps (such as Viddy and SocialCam) are on the rise. To that end, with an interest in how they stack up against the top social video juggernaut, YouTube, Flurry compared its mobile video consumption data with publicly available information from comScore regarding online video consumption. It found that over the course of 2011, monthly minutes spent viewing video content on Google Sites grew 71%; in comparison, monthly time spent on video apps grew 141%. In 2012, online video consumption on Google actually fell by 10%, while mobile app video consumption increased by 52%. By the end of March, consumers were spending an average of 231 minutes on mobile video apps, versus 425 minutes on Google Sites online. This, Flurry says, appears to be a signal of disruption.
The WatchESPN mobile iOS and web apps are now available to Comcast Xfinity TV customers. WatchESPN is the sports network’s TV Everywhere offering that lets users watch live games on multiple devices. Comcast says WatchESPN content will also be accessible through XfinityTV.com, beginning later this week.
As part of IFC’s upcoming series Comedy Bang! Bang!, the network has released the first episode of its companion web series, Reggie Makes Music. The webisodes feature various celebrities from the show creating impromptu musical interludes alongside Reggie Watts. The first episode stars Jon Hamm “freestyling” on the classic TV show Taxi. Comedy Bang! Bang! premieres on June 8 at 10pm ET, Hamm will be appearing on the show later in the season.
With Mother’s Day on the horizon, NBC’s TODAY is in the midst of a week-long “Moms Rule” campaign that features a special Mother’s Day section where users can go to access videos, gift guides, contests, and an e-card center, as well as read stories about moms. TODAY has also partnered with Microsoft to run a sweepstakes on the Xbox 360, through which moms have the chance to win a trip (for two) to the Caribbean when they download the TODAY app for the console. And finally, starting today, the TODAY Moms blog will start publishing inspiration stories about mothers. To all mothers, enjoy the week and hope this coming weekend is a great one.
Airtime, a new San Francisco-based start-up from Napster Co-Founders Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning, will be ready to launch on June 5. The start-up aims to use “the latest video technology to bring people together,” according to a blurb on its website. Airtime investors include Founders Fund, Accel Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, Google Ventures, SV Angel, Yuri Milner, Ashton Kutcher, will.i.am, Scott Braun, and Michael Arrington.
Belly, a start-up that has developed a mobile-based, Foursquare-style (check-ins) customer loyalty platform, has received $10 million in Series B financing from Andreessen Horowitz. It says the new funds will be directed toward the development of its loyalty platform, including expansion into new cities, new partnerships, and new product development. The start-up also announced that Jeff Jordan, GM at Andreessen Horowitz, has joined its Board of Directors. It has also expanded to New York and Boston, joining existing cities such as Chicago, Austin, Milwaukee, Madison, Washington, D.C., and Phoenix.
Aiming to provide marketers with the ability to design online campaigns and target large volumes of audiences, eXelate has reached an agreement with Turn to integrate eXelate data into Turn’s Audience Platform. Turn says its platform makes over 30 billion advertising decisions everyday, and its intelligent learning algorithms can process in real-time the data that flows through eXelate’s system. eXelate premium data spans 350 million users across the globe, and provides more than 1,000 targetable segments in online purchase intent, household demographics, and behavioral propensities.
Vitrue has expanded its existing partnership with NBC Sports Group to serve as the social media management platform for all NBC Sports properties. Per the deal, Vitrue’s Social Relationship Management (SRM) platform will manage the social media presences for NBC Olympics, NBC Sports, Sunday Night Football, NHL on NBC, and Golf Channel, among others. Previously, Vitrue SRM had managed social media for NBC Sports events. Since January 2012, Vitrue has also been responsible for NHL on NBC’s social presence. The company says that the partnership has scaled NHL on NBC’s Facebook fan base and social interactions by more than 40%; increased average daily organic reach on Facebook by almost 100%; increased averaged engaged users on Facebook by 107%; increased Twitter followers by more than 45%; and also created an NHL on NBC Instagram channel that has seen its followers grow by more than 200%.
WebCollage has inked a deal with Monster, a provider of power management products, A/V accessories, and headphones (including Beats by Dre), through which Monster will use WebCollage’s technology to provide rich content information of its products to retail websites. WebCollage provides manufacturers and retailers with the ability to offer rich media online product descriptions, using videos, tours, images, and text. It then manages real-time, automatic content updates across its network of retail websites.

Mobile ad company Jumptap has released its April MobileSTAT report. It found that on the Jumptap network, Kindle Fire usage is cooling off after the winter holiday spike. In January, Fire represented 33% of all tablet usage on Jumptap (somewhat rivaling iPad’s 48%). Since then, Kindle Fire’s share of traffic has decreased to 22% (Jumptap offers the launch of the new iPad as a likely reason for this). However, Jumptap notes that usage of Kindle Fire continued to increase with average monthly traffic at three times the amount seen in Q4 2011. Other interesting data covering the Jumptap network includes:
- Travel (4x the average CTR), Games (3.5x the average CTR), and Entertainment (2x the average CTR) were the highest performing app and mobile web channels for travel advertisers.
- Democrats were 43% more likely than the average mobile user to use their mobile devices late at night (11pm to 2am). Republicans were 39% more likely to use their mobile devices between 5pm and 10pm. Democrats were more likely to use social networking and entertainment sites, while Republicans spent more time on news and weather sites.
- Jumptap says the previous data received support recently when the Romeny campaign ran a mobile program with Jumptap that had a 21% higher CTR in the 5-10pm timeframe than in other hours.
The percentage of Facebook ad budgets in the U.S. allocated toward social ads has increased from 5% to 23% in the last 12 months; and social ads will account for nearly 50% of Facebook ad budgets by the end of 2012, according to research from Marin Software. Additionally, in the past 12 months, the cost-per-click (CPC) of social ads in the U.S. has increased 86%, while the CPC of Marketplace Ads (similar to display ads) overall decreased 15%. The report from the online ad management platform provider also finds that consumer engagement with Facebook ads is also on the up, with click-through rates (CTR) improving 50% in the past year.
Consumers are “fluid” and “channel-agnostic,” while the current state of digital marketing practices designed to reach them can be best described as being too “channel-centric,” according to the results of a recent survey of CMOs, agencies, and publishers, conducted by digital ad tech company PulsePoint, in partnershp with The CMO Club and Digiday. The study cites “overwhelming complexity” and a “lack of unified measurement” as key challenges in preventing the industry from being properly aligned with the consumer, with said challenges making it difficult to track consumers across channels. “There is a recognized need to stay connected to the digital consumer and evolve to more unified practices and process, but the majority of the industry is not focused on this in the near term,” said Karl Lendenmann, Ph.D., SVP/Research for PulsePoint. However, the study also finds that real-time intelligence and unified automation, when applied in unison, can go a long way in bridging this divide.
IFC has promoted Craig Parks to SVP/Digital Media & Alternative Content, from VP, effective immediately. Parks is responsible for overseeing editorial and creative content for IFC.com, developing social media strategies to boost viewer engagement, and for developing the distribution strategy for IFC content across alternative platforms. He also develops new business initiatives geared toward driving revenue. Based in the network’s New York City office, Parks will continue to report to IFC President & GM, Jennifer Caserta.
HealthGuru has expanded its ad sales team with the hiring of Steve McEvoy, Arthur Fried, and Lauren Rosenberg as Sales Directors. Each will report to John Glascott, SVP/Sales & Syndication. Arthur Fried is also joining the Business Development team at HealthGuru, joining another new hire Branden Smyth. Fried and Smyth will to Christopher Bruno, Co-Founder and EVP/Business Development at HealthGuru.
Mobile web-based social games company Tylted has announced several additions to its management team. Steven Van Blarcom has been appointed as EVP, where he will focus on revenue generation and relationship building. Stellah De Ville has been named Creative Director, where she will oversee Tylted’s overall creative direction and its brand stewardship. Other hires include David Waldman as Executive Director/Business Development and Strategic Partnerships; Wonny Lee as Director/Marketing; and Christian Montoya as Producer. These additions are a part of the company’s expansion plans that include the opening of a new corporate HQ in Manhattan.
