Cynopsis

5/09/07

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, May 9, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing, from the Cable Show 2007 in Las Vegas.

Original episodes of Law & Order and Law & Order: Criminal Intent on TNT?  The offer has been made and negotiations are currently in progress between the cable network, NBC and Dick Wolf Prods.  Both L&Os have dipped in the ratings this year, averaging 9.0 million viewers for the original L&O, and 8.8 million for Criminal Intent. With the broadcast upfronts next week, the feeling is neither may show up on NBC’s fall schedule. TNT, as the network who knows drama, has been airing repeats of the series for some time, and while the dip in total viewers may be considered a negative for a broadcast network, it’s still a significant number for a cable network.

Tonight’s Finales:
CBS: Jericho at 8p
NBC: Thank God You’re Here at 8p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Disney-ABC Television group struck a deal with Cox Communications to provide episodes of prime time shows Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost and Ugly Betty for its FreeZone video on demand platform the day after the shows premiere on air. The streaming software will disable the fast-forward function to make it impossible for users to skip ads. A dynamic ad insertion system, to replace stale ads with more timely ones, should be in place by the time the service rolls out this fall. ABC will also syndicate its broadband player for Cox.net users in Orange County.

And the winner is… FX.  The cable network has signed a 5-year deal for the TV rights for Spider-Man 3. The domestic box office receipts will determine the license fee, which of course is going to be a mighty big one based on the movie’s first weekend of $140 million plus.  FX’s window would begin in 2009, following the Starz pay TV window. FX also holds the rights to Spider-Man 2 in a deal that is estimated to have run upwards of $50 million.

Elsewhere at FX, the cable net has renewed Dirt and The Riches for next year, ordering 13 episodes of each. Other original series coming to FX in the not-too-distant future are Damages starring Glenn Close on July 24, the return of Rescue Me on June 13.

FOX has renewed Talkshow with Spike Feresten for its Saturday late-night line-up, with a full order of episodes for the 2007-2008 season. The half-hour show is produced by Fox Television Studios.

Court TV’s upcoming reality series Speeders will give viewers a first-hand look as cops pull over surprised and dismayed lead-foot motorists. The 14-episode series was shot in various U.S. cities from coast to coast and will join the network’s R.E.D. primetime programming block starting June 7 at 8p. Zoo Productions produced the series for Court TV.

Bravo will debut Top Chef 3 Miami on June 13 at 10p. In season three, Ted Allen, culinary expert from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, will join the other judges as 15 more aspiring chefs vie for the top prize. The week prior to the series launch, Bravo will also air an hour-long special Top Chef: 4-Star All-Stars on June 6 at 10p which will bring together four finalists from each of the first two seasons, to participate in a $20,000 charity cook-off.

ABC Family will add ten more episodes to season two of its original series Kyle XY, making it a total order of 23 one-hour episodes. The second season of Kyle XY debuts on June 11 at 8p and the ten bonus episodes will air in first quarter 2008. The series is from ABC Studios.

Hallmark Channel is offering previews of its new on-air look and tagline “Make Yourself at Home” at its new affiliate web site at www.insidehallmarkchannel.com. The site contains new interactive video, including promos for original movies and regular series and more.

The Africa Channel has made an affiliation agreement with Charter Communications that will place the network on Charter’s cable systems nationwide. The network will launch this week on Charter’s Fort Worth, TX system.

DIY Network will serve up a new season of Sweat Equity, the weekly series with licensed contractor Amy Matthews, that provides details for homeowners on how to increase home values through various home improvement projects. The show airs each Tuesday and Thursday at 830p and the new episodes begin June 12.

Buoyed by the success of Deadliest Catch, Discovery Channel will premiere a new four-part series called After the Catch on May 29 at 10p. This show will reveal more in-depth stories from the captains and crew doing the deadliest jobs in the world.

Attention Baseball fans – the June 7 draft will be televised for the first time on ESPN2, airing all first round picks.  Up first – Tampa Bay.
