Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 8, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
TBS is officially in line to receive college basketball’s big kahuna, and will carry seven of the nine Final Four and National Championship games played between 2014 and 2016. CBS and Turner Sports announced the programming schedule yesterday, stating that in 2014 and 2015, TBS will televise the NCAA Final Four national semifinals while CBS broadcasts the NCAA National Championship game. After that, the two networks will alternate through 2024 with TBS carrying the 2016 Final Four and National Championship Game, while CBS offers the games in 2017. In addition, beginning in 2014 and running through 2024, coverage of the Regional Semifinals and Regional Finals games will be split by TBS and CBS. Early round coverage of the tournament will continue to be televised across CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV with the First Four airing exclusively on truTV.
NBC Sports announced that six-time Grammy Award-winner and multi-platinum recording artist Carrie Underwood will replace Faith Hill to perform the opening theme for Sunday Night Football on NBC. The song, Waiting All Day for Sunday Night, will first be run with Underwood as the voice on Sunday, September 8 on NBC’s first SNF broadcast of the 2013 NFL season, featuring the Cowboys and the Giants.
Manny Pacquiao lined up his next event, where he will take on Brandon Rios this fall at the Cotai Arena at the Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel in Macau, China, on Nov. 24 (Nov. 23 stateside). The fight marks Pacquiao’s first fight outside the US border since 2006 and will take place in the morning so US PPV telecasts will still run on primetime.

Viewership was up 9% from last year’s Derby (14.8 million), and up 12 percent from the Derby in 2011 (14.5 million), according to official national data provided by Nielsen. The household rating score of 9.7/21 ranks as the best since 2010 (9.8/23), and tied 2009 as the second highest-rated Derby since 1992 (10.3/30 on ABC), up 8% from last year.
Conference USA revealed its preliminary television schedule for the 2013 football season with more than 50 games set to air nationally or regionally. National games will be carried by Fox Sports, CBS Sports Network and ESPN. This season, FOX Sports 1 is scheduled to run a minimum of 10 regular-season Conference USA football games starting Thursday, Sept. 5 with Florida Atlantic/East Carolina. CBS Sports Network will carry a minimum of 13 C-USA football games nationally, kicking off on Saturday, Aug. 31 with Miami (Ohio)/Marshall. The 2013 C-USA Championship game on Saturday, Dec. 7 will run on either ESPN or ESPN 2.
SPEED will carry a one-hour special titled A Racer’s Life: Richard Childress on May 12 at 8:30p, detailing Childress’ life, and his rise to sport powerhouse. Steve Byrnes hosts with features that include an in-depth interview with Childress’ wife, Judy, as well as chats with Ricky Rudd, the driver who gave Childress his first NASCAR victory as an owner, and grandson and RCR driver Austin Dillon.
Canadian sports cable channel Sportsnet has won exclusive Canadian media rights to qualification matches for the UEFA Euro 2016 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournaments, with access to 258 qualifiers for UEFA EURO 2016 from September 2014 and another 258 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, starting in September 2016.
MSG Network’s telecasts of the Knicks and Celtics in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals of the NBA Playoffs saw boosts in average household ratings and demos, according to Nielsen. The channel, which carried Games 2, 3, 5 and 6 of the first round series, registered a 3.68 average household rating, up 40% versus 2012 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals between the Knicks and Heat. The network also grew in Adults 25 to 54 and Men 25 to 54, hitting a 2.40 A25-54 rating, up 105% and a 3.53 M25-54 rating, up 99%.
