Good morning, it’s Wednesday, May 2, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Dow Jones & Co. was suddenly put into play with an unsolicited $5 billion buyout bid from News Corp. The news sent shares of Wall Street Journal publisher soaring yesterday, as the $60/share offer would be at a 65% premium over Monday’s closing price. The stock price leveled off when it was reported that Dow Jones’ controlling shareholder, the Bancroft family, plans to vote against the proposal. The announcement led to speculation that the Bancrofts could be posturing to coax a higher bid or allow other suitors to join the bidding. Dow Jones’ digital assets include wsj.com, Wall Street Journal Asia, Barrons.com, Far Eastern Economic Review, Dow Jones Newswires, CareerJournal.com and MarketWatch.com. All of could work nicely with News Corp.’s plans to launch a new financial news network.

Among Cablevision‘s holdings are Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, the NY Knicks, the NY Rangers, and a host of cable networks.  The Dolans, the family behind Cablevision, has been trying to take the company private for a few years, and now they may be getting their chance.  According to reports, Cablevision is close to a deal to sell itself back to Dolans for $10.5 billion in cash, plus another $12 billion in debut, overall a 10% premium over where Cablevision closed on the stock market yesterday.  Don’t open the champagne just yet – the Dolans have been this close before only to be derailed at the 11th hour.

After receiving viewer feedback, PBS has selected Wired Science as its latest science series with a premiere date of October 3 at 8p. The 10-week, one-hour primetime series, a production of KCET/Los Angeles in association with Wired Magazine, will take elements of the print publication and reveal scientific advances and technologies that are enhancing the world. The series will also launch a web site at www.pbs.org/wiredscience that will contain streaming video from the series, articles by Wired writers and viewer interaction opportunities.

Network Evening News Update: For the week of April 23, ABC’s World News with Charles Gibson took the lead with both total viewers and among A25-54 over the other two networks. The breakdown is as follows:
ABC: 8.20 million total viewers; 2.1/9 A25-54
NBC: 7.89 million total viewers; 2.0/9 A25-54

Game broadcasts on ABC of the Women’s National Basketball Association’s second decade will begin May 19 with a match between the Detroit Shock and the Sacramento Monarchs at 330p. For the first time, this new WNBA season will be broadcast in more than 200 countries.

Twentieth Television, Inc. has renewed its syndicated court shows, Divorce Court and Judge Alex through the 2008-2009 season. In 2008 Divorce Court will be going into its tenth season with Lynn Toler as presiding judge, and Judge Alex into its fourth season with Alex Ferrer presiding.

CMT will begin its search for the ultimate American cowboy with a two-hour special that launches the new competition series America’s Top Cowboy on May 19 at 9p. Six contestants will gather at the CF Ranch in Alpine, TX and go through various challenges to test their cowboy skills with one lone winner receiving $50,000 along with the title. The series is hosted by country music star Trent Willmon and produced by Triage Entertainment.

TVG, the Horseracing Network, has expanded its distribution agreement with DIRECTV which has resulted in adding more than 8 million DIRECTV subscribers. The network will move to DIRECTV’s Total Choice Plus and Choice Extra packages. TVG will now reach almost 26 million homes across the country.

Milton Grant, President/CEO of Grant Communications Inc. and one of the last individual owners of a television station group, died at his home in Fort Lauderdale on April 28. Milt was the owner and manager of several television stations including WFXR/Roanoke, WWCW/Lynchburg, WZDX, WAMY and WZDX-DT/Huntsville, WLAX/La Crosse, WEUX/Eau Claire, KGGW/Burlington, IA and KLJB/Davenport, IA. Considered a founding father of the television industry, Milt’s career spanned nearly 60 years. He is survived by his wife, children and several grandchildren. Instead of flowers, donations are requested by the family to the American Cancer Society. A service honoring his life is being held today at the Star of David Cemetery and Chapel in North Lauderdale.

Actor Tom Poston, who you may remember best as the handyman George Utley on Newhart, has died at the age of 85.  His earliest performances came in the 1950s when he appeared on an episode of Tom Corbett, Space Cadet, and on several episodes of Studio One and The Phil Silvers Show among numerous other appearances. On The Steve Allen Show he played the Perennial Amnesiac for six episodes, but chose to stay in the NY area when the Allen Show moved to California. He went on to appear in countless television series including The Simpsons, Mork & Mindy, That ’70s Show, Home Improvement and King of the Hill, and numerous movies including Cold Turkey, Fame, Krippendorf’s Tribe, and most recently in Christmas with the Kranks.  He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Pleshette, and three grown children.

Dabbs Greer, 90, passed away on Saturday.  Name not familiar?  Greer was one of those actors who you always knew, but perhaps couldn’t put a finger on a name.  He was the Reverend Alden on Little House on the Prairie, Wilbur Jonas on Gunsmoke, Mr. Coolidge on the Ghost & Mrs. Muir, and going way back was Mr. Blandish on How to Marry a Millionaire in 1957.  In fact Greer appeared numerous times on countless television series, usually a different character each time. He was the first guy Superman ever saved in 1952, and he also appeared in the final episode of the series.
