Today’s upfront presentation is from CBS this afternoon at Carnegie Hall. Expected announcements include something new for Sunday night, replacing the Sunday Night Movie. Water cooler rumors on this move include switching Without a Trace to 9p and follow with one of the new drama series picked up by the network. Monday is expected to continue as CBS’ comedy night, one of the network’s new drama series on Tuesday’s at 10p. Beyond that, there aren’t a lot of holes to fill or a lot of trouble areas to address.
Discovery Communications now has programming content from many of its networks available for purchase on the iTunes Music Store. For $1.99 per episode, programming series and specials from Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, Discovery Health Channel and Discovery Kids can be downloaded to PCs or iPods.
Liberty Media Corp. has set a deal in motion with IDT Corp. to acquire IDT Entertainment, for all of Liberty Media’s equity interests in IDT and its subsidiaries, $186 million in cash and the assumption of existing debts. Upon completion of the deal, IDT Ent. will become part of Liberty Media’s Starz Entertainment Group (SEG), providing Starz with the capability to create a range of CG animated and live action programming for domestic and international distribution in all major channels, including broadcast syndication, premium TV, theatrical, and home video/DVD. Additionally, IDT Ent. and SEG will sign a five year programming deal under which some of IDT Ent.’s CGI animated movies and live action shows will be broadcast on Starz’s premium channels.
Three stations owned by Tribune Broadcasting are set to become MyNetworkTV affiliates: WPHL/Philadelphia, WATL/Atlanta and KTWB/Seattle.
This Thursday, the entire cast of NBC’s Will & Grace along with NBC Universal Television Group CEO Jeff Zucker and NBC Universal Television Studio President Angela Bromstead, will ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange to celebrate the show’s series finale that night at 8p.
UPFRONT 2006: ABC
ABC unveiled its Fall 2006 primetime line-up at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. The schedule includes six new drama series:
- Brothers & Sisters: Calista Flockhart stars as Kitty, a TV pundit living in LA whose New York boyfriend has just proposed. The overall drama about herself and her siblings is told through Kitty’s eyes. From producer Ken Olin and Jon Robin Baitz; produced by Touchstone Television.
- Day Break (midseason): Detective Brett Hopper is having a bad day, over and over again. He’s accused of killing the Assistant DA, realizes he’s been framed and goes on the run. He then wakes up and relives the same day all over again. Starring Taye Diggs from Touchstone Television.
- Men in Trees: Anne Heche stars as a relationship coach whose advice is invaluable to countless women – except herself. The story takes her to Alaska where she is determined to find out just what it really is that makes men tick. Produced by Tree Line Film, Perkins Street Productions, NS Pictures, Inc., and Warner Bros. Television.
- The Nine: Nine people are caught up in a bank robbery gone wrong and endure a 52-hour hostage standoff that leaves more than one person dead. These people are changed and their lives are intertwined forever. From Warner Bros. Television and Sunset Road Productions.
- Six Degrees: Six very different New Yorkers go about their lives not knowing how they are affecting the others. A mysterious web of events draws them together in an intriguing tale of intertwined destinies. From Touchstone Television.
- Traveler (midseason): Three best friends perform a prank inside a New York City museum that goes bad. Two of the friends are picked up for a suspected terrorist attack as the museum explodes immediately after their prank. The third friend has disappeared completely – from the scene and from their past. From Warner Bros. Television and The Jinks/Cohen Company.
ABC also has plans for six new comedies:
- Betty the Ugly: In the superficial world of high fashion, Betty is often overlooked as a plump plain Jane who is hired as the assistant. Based on the telenovela Betty la Fea. Executive producers are Salma Hayek and Silvio Horta. Produced by Touchstone Television.
- Big Day: Focusing on one single day in a couple’s life for the entire season, this series launches in Season #1 with their wedding day, as seen through the eyes of everyone around them. From Sony Pictures Television.
- Help Me Help You: Ted Danson stars as a successful group therapy leader who has more obsessions and crazy ideas than the people he’s trying to help. Produced by Regency Television.
- In Case of Emergency (Midseason): A series of emergencies reunite old high school buddies whose lives have not turned out as originally planned. From Touchstone Television.
- Let’s Rob . . . : A band of affable, new-age Robin Hoods plan a major heist robbing Mick Jagger’s Central West apartment. Starring Donal Logue with Mick Jagger appearing in a cameo. From Touchstone Television.
- Notes from the Underbelly: Andrew and Lauren are having a baby and having a hard time keeping the secret from their family and friends, who all try to “help” with well-meaning advice. From Warner Bros. Television and The Tannenbaum Company.
On the dock-it are three alternative series:
- Greg Behrendt’s Wake-Up Call: The acclaimed author of He’s Just Not That Into You, Greg Behrendt will take a close look at one couple’s problems and give them his advice to fix things.
- Just for Laughs: A hidden camera series that crosses cultural boundaries that combine practical jokes and unsuspecting victims.
- Set for the Rest of Your Life: A game show where contestants battle for the highest monthly check possible – $50? $500 a month? Or perhaps $10,000? Their partners, hidden in a sound-proof booth will either help make the dream come true or ruin everything.
ABC has ordered season renewals on a slew of programs: Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, Desperate Housewives, Boston Legal, Dancing with the Stars, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, George Lopez, Supernanny, What About Brian, According to Jim, America’s Funniest Home Videos, American Inventor, The Bachelor and Wife Swap. Also, ABC has ordered up a full new season of Primetime, which will return to the schedule later on in the season.
What’s not on the ABC list of renewals: Rodney, Commander-in-Chief (they may do a 2-hour movie, but that’s it), Freddie, Invasion, Hope & Faith, Less Than Perfect, Jake in Progress.
Casting Call: The Executive Producer for a new word-game show – Chain Reaction, where teams of three men will compete against teams of three women – is auditioning contestants. Find two friends and fill out the application for your chance to be on the show. Go to: www.embassyrow.com for all the details.
Lenora Hume has been appointed as EVP/Production and Programming by the Board of HIT Entertainment.
