Good morning, it’s Wednesday, May 14, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Blinding potential advertisers with science, ABC introduced a new Advertising Value Index tool to help advertisers analyze a number of factors to determine the effectiveness of ads on their network. Like an online dating service, advertisers provide the ABC sales team with a list of marketing objectives then the AVI formula spits out what shows to buy against. Disney’s Media Networks division is building a new Advertising and Emerging Media Lab in Austin, TX with the Perth, Australia-based Interactive Television Research Institute to crunch the numbers, measuring engagement across multiple platforms by looking at changes in heart rate, skin conductivity and other factors. – Creative and Innovative Campaigns Since 1997


The first HBO shows are already up on iTunes. Season one of The Wire and Flight of the Concords are available a la carte for $1.99/episode or as entire seasons for prices ranging from $23-$35. Deadwood, Rome and seasons 1 & 6 (part 1 & 2) of The Sopranos are a little pricier at $2.99/episode or $35-$38/season. Also the entire run of Sex and the City is available for fans who want to relive the show before the movie comes out on May 30, priced at roughly $16-$23/season.
PBS has turned to content management firm thePlatform to make its national programming available via,,, and on local affiliate sites. Local stations will also be able to upload locally produced fare to share content with other stations.
Starz penciled in July for the launch of Encore HD, its fifth HD network launch.
ION Media Networks signed an IPTV transport agreement with SES Americom’s IP-Prime for the delivery of ION’s national suite of programming.


Paris Hilton, her sister Nicky and her mom Kathy are making the jump to the PC screen starring in 6-part miniseries sponsored by Kathy’s My Secret perfume and produced by New York-based For Your Imagination. A Day With the Hiltons follows a mother-daughter duo who won a trip to LA to shop and dine with the Hiltons. TV Guide Broadband will syndicate the series through existing relationships with YouTube, Hulu, Veoh and other affiliates.
Bebo has nailed down all 6 participants of The Gap Year, its latest interactive online reality series launching May 21, taking contestants from Machu Picchu, Peru to Ko Pha-Ngan, Thailand. Kate Modern is scheduled to wrap on June 28.
Digital serialized publisher DailyLit announced a new feature that allows users to receive daily installments from Wikipedia. Each installment contains a brief introduction to a sub-category (e.g. “Buddhism” or “Chardonnay”) and includes a link to the Wikipedia entry for more detailed reading. Topics include Wine 101, Wonders of the World and Greek Mythology.


Picking up on the whole online viewing party trend NBC, ABC Family and others are experimenting with, Microsoft launched a new app on MSN called Messenger TV. Users can log on to watch shows and music clips together from MTV, Sony BMG and other content providers.  The service is launching in 20 international countries initially but is not yet available in the U.S.
Windows users can buy the new Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000 in the U.S., touted as the easiest to use add-on webcam yet for the PC. (It kind of looks like Hal in 2001: A Space Odyssey doesn’t it?) It’s optimized for Windows Live Messenger and goes together with the new LifeChat LX-3000 headset.


Billionaire Carl Icahn has thrown his hat into the ring of the Microhoo circus. Amassing about 50 million Yahoo shares since Microsoft withdrew its offer on May 3, Icahn may use his newly acquired influence to launch a proxy fight to unseat some of Yahoo’s directors and force the new board to reconsider Microsoft’s offer. Yahoo’s share price closed up over 5% on the prospect.

After that showdown in a Delaware court Barry Diller and John Malone finally patched up their differences, clearing the way for IAC to spin off HSN, Interval International, Ticketmaster and Lending Tree into separate companies. IAC will continue to maintain its ad supported sites such as dating site and search engine filed a counter lawsuit against its minority shareholder eBay in a Bay area court yesterday, accusing eBay of unfair business practices, copyright infringement and a list of other no-no’s. Ebay started it with a suit filed last month alleging Craigslist unfairly diluted its interest in the company by more than 10%.


YouTube introduced a new ad product called “buzz targeting,” helping producers benefit when their videos go viral. The site created an algorithm analyzing acceleration of views, favorites and ratings activity to determine which videos are about to take off, allowing advertisers to contour their ads to fit with these up and coming videos. Lionsgate was the first sponsor to test the system, running ads for The Forbidden Kingdom against more than 500 partner videos.
Comcast Media Center
is launching a centralized platform at the National Cable Show to support advanced interactive application developers and facilitate the launch of their interactive services on cable systems serving small to mid-size markets.


Total worldwide revenue generated from User Generated Video (UGV) is expected to exceed $1.19 billion by 2012, according to a new report from In-Stat. More than 160 billion videos are expected to be served that year – putting even greater demands on ISPs – thanks to the proliferation of cheap HD cameras. Mobile UGV uploads are also expected to make up a significant share of the market.

Discovery sites are the new hot properties on the web, acting as matchmakers between users and content providers. One of the more innovative is eBay’s StumbleUpon, which uses Tivo-style thumbs up or thumbs down ratings to form collaborative opinions on website quality and usability. Well now they’re helping users to stumble upon videos, scouring content from new partners College Humor, Funny or Die, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Veoh and, along with existing providers YouTube, Google, MySpace and Metacafe. You can click on “stumble” for a random clip or pick a channel to narrow the selection by genre. It’s rudimentary, I know, but think of it as a duty to your fellow web surfers to help the cream rise to the top. The company has even built an interface for the Nintendo Wii to help users discover viral videos from the couch.
