Comcast plans to streamline the authentication process to make it easier for subscribers to log in from “Everywhere” to access premium, on-demand video content online. Usage of Comcast’s TV Everywhere service, alluded to by CEO Brian Roberts at the Cable Show in a conversation with producer Peter Chernin, has been slowed by requiring users to jump through too many hoops such as downloading the Comcast Access client app – currently required to view Fancast Xfinity TV content. Further, the new version is being optimized to run on mobile phones and devices like the iPad. Comcast also announced it is expanding the number of movie choices offered On Demand by more than 450% by adding nearly 9,000 movie titles. The industry has seen a 30% increase in PPV VOD buy rates since launching a $30 million campaign to sell VOD as a concept, according to Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.
Following up on the interactive series Blog Cabin, DIY Network is launching a crowdsourced home renovation series in Aug. dubbed Run My Renovation. DIYnetwork.com users will determine all of the show’s design decisions through online voting, with each of 13 episodes focusing on different homeowners and rooms. The show premieres Aug 19, immediately following the season 4 premiere of Blog Cabin.
ABC is giving Lost fans a chance to text their favorite characters goodbye in an integration with Verizon Wireless. Fans need to watch next Tuesday to receive a special short code to text to. Selected messages will be used on-air on Sunday, May 23 during the retrospective special, “Lost: The Final Journey,” from 7-9 pm ET.
GolTV signed an affiliate deal with DirecTV to carry its GolTV HD feed, its first carriage deal for the new simulcast network. The service will launch on DirecTV in August after the World Cup and be available to all DirecTV HDTV customers.
Media center software provider Boxee has chosen Vindicia to power its payment platform, a system that will allow independent producers to charge for subscriptions or individual episodes of their content.
Part online game, part graphic novel, AMC‘s The Interrogation allows readers to participate in an interactive adventure that unfolds differently depending on what narrative thread you choose. The user takes the role of Walter’s brother-in-law Hank Schrader (pre-attack) as he sweats a nebbish actuary about a fire at his church. Your goal is to get him to spill what he knows before “lawyering up.”
WPP’s Kantar unit announced the launch of several initiatives in online and mobile video, including the formation of the Kantar Video platform, headed by industry veteran Bill Ledere. Slated to launch in public beta over 2010, New York-based Kantar Video will syndicate, track and optimize video delivery over a global network relying on proprietary tools and analytics packages to get a leg up on the competition:
- Kantar “Videolytics” data will be combined with descriptive, behavioral and attitudinal data from consumer panels operated by other Kantar business units
- a viral video analytics solution called Echo Video will evaluate and optimize viral video for a brand and compare it to the competitive set
- Echo Video will combine data sets from across Kantar, including social media firm Cymfony and digital analytics company Compete
Online ad network Tribal Fusion unveiled a new video ad platform that distributes targeted video ads within standard display ads. Unlike pre-roll ads, which require countless integrations, Firefly Video spots run in banner ads published across Tribal Fusion’s network; clicking on the ad reveals a full-page video with interactive elements. Tribal is already executing some 25 campaigns utilizing the Firefly technology for brands including Hyundai, Dannon, Nissan and Haagen Dazs. The company says a recent deployment for a consumer products brand with Starcom generated more than 60,000 prospects.
Online advertising technology company Resonate is refining its new targeting solution based on audiences’ attitudes, values and beliefs, specifically designed for political and advocacy campaigns. The solution will help clients identify and target prospective donors or volunteers by sifting through more than a thousand attributes including ideology, issue positions, voting history, party affiliation, engagement and media consumption.
The FTC is taking an extra two weeks to review Google‘s acquisition of AdMob in order to understand the effect of Apple’s purchase of Quattro Wireless, reports the NYTimes. The commission has been leaning toward opposing the deal because of its anticompetitive effect on the mobile ad market.
Interactive Television is only as compelling as the footprint it can deliver to, particularly for advertisers. In another step forward for the industry’s EBIF specification (now dubbed SelecTV for consumers), Comcast is working with itaas Inc. to deploy interactive ads and other enhanced applications on legacy Cisco set-top boxes. A new user agent built on EBIF specs from Comcast’s TVWorks subsidiary has already been deployed across 12 million homes and over 20,000 set-top boxes with trials planned for later this year.
The FCC is proposing a new regulation that would require wireless carriers to notify customers when they are about to go over on their allotted monthly voice or data plans. The EU has similar rules requiring carriers to send text messages to consumers when they are running up roaming charges or getting close to a set limit for data roaming.

THX Ltd. and its partners are demoing a new technology at the CableNET pavilion that simplifies cable viewing by optimizing subscriber playback settings for a wide range of cable programming, including 3D video-on-demand. THX Media Director automatically selects appropriate aspect ratio, color space, surround sound modes, 2D and 3D display features unique to the content being presented and is designed to integrate with existing set-tops via a firmware update.
MediaMelon and Edgeware AB, announced the integration of Edgeware’s Web TV servers with the MediaCloud SaaS solution, enabling telcos and datacenters to offer HD multi-source content delivery solutions and analytics for their customers.
Millennials clearly have completely different views on business, marketing and communication than the general market, according to a new comprehensive survey from N.Y-based social marketing agency Mr. Youth, many of which stem from being immersed in social technologies from a young age. The study outlines ten core principles that successful businesses should adhere to as they evolve to adapt to younger employees and leaders, breaking down strategies around companies’ organizational structures, products and marketing.

The game is currently available in Australia and Hong Kong in English and will roll out to other Asia Pacific markets throughout the year.

After Facebook announced that its fastest growing demo was the over 30 crowd, it seems there is suddenly no shortage of social networking sites for the Baby Boomer generation. (Eons.com and TBD.com are a couple of popular ones.) With an estimated 16.5 million adults over 55 in the U.S. involved in social networks, according to ComScore, NBCU figures there’s also a need for more content sites targeting the demo. NBC Digital Networks, a division of iVillage, has teamed with Proctor & Gamble Productions to launch a new portal of sites dubbed Life Goes Strong. The branded entertainment site has launched in beta with 3 verticals – family, tech and style – with more categories planned in the near future. The content is what you might expect – articles, blogs, expert posts, how-to videos, polls, etc. – all from the point of view of aging audiences. For instance, a two-part interview with blogger Robert Scoble by Tech contributor Sean Gallagher digs into how Twitter and Facebook are changing the flow of information and what Facebook is really after by changing its privacy settings. Then there’s Slang Blaster, a searchable dictionary of text message shorthand. Enuf said.
