Movie streaming options continue to pop up all over the place. Warner Bros. has signed a deal with Facebook to become the first studio to offer digital movie rentals directly from the social networking site. Beginning with Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, fans will have full-screen, pausable access for up to 48 hours from the time of purchase, with the price set at $3 or 30 Facebook Credits (Facebook’s virtual currency.) Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, which also released “The Dark Knight” and “Inception” as “App Editions” for Apple iOS devices across 35 territories, says additional titles will be added to the platform “on a regular basis.” Netflix’ stock price took a plunge with the news, as it did with the App Edition announcement.
PictureBox, a subscription movies streaming service wholly owned by Universal Pictures, has launched a new online player in the UK and Ireland available on PCs, iPads and Samsung internet-connected Smart TVs. Subscribers gain access to a rotating list of 28 new and library titles including “Mamma Mia!,” “Charlie Wilson’s War” and “Pride & Prejudice.”
Footprint Media Holdings announced it will unveil the first 24-hour 3D family-entertainment channel, HIGHTV 3D, at the opening cocktail at MIPTV on April 4. The channel, developed with RRsat, will feature a mix of entertainment, lifestyle and original reality shows and will be based in LA.
The website of NBC’s Today Show, formerly a page within the msnbc.com site, has relaunched as Today.com with a new look featuring video segments strewn across the top of the home page. The video timeline is updated throughout the day as segments appear on broadcast, with the most popular clips and editor’s picks highlighted. Facebook sharing also figure prominently into the redesign.
Internet TV OS provider Boxee is planning to use its recent $16.5 million investment to expand its European operations and is currently in talks with several European content services including LoveFilm and Spotify, per paid content. Boxee’s payment platform, which will allow independent producers to charge for their content, is now due to launch during Q2.
The aforementioned Stockholm-based subscription music service Spotify reached a milestone of 1 million paying customers across Europe.
Craigslist founder Craig Newmark has launched a new blog geared toward promoting and creating connections around nonprofits groups dedicated to making the world a better place.
Film State is the newest original show to crack Revision3’s line up, a fast-moving weekly movie news show hosted by Ryan Connolly. The show actually rates film trailers, ranging from “EFF Yeah” to “Zombie Apocalypse.”
Sprint and Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile division, the two remaining major carriers who don’t offer the iPhone in the U.S., are in merger talks according to a Bloomberg report. T-Mobile, whose revenue totaled $21.4 billion in 2010, was the only major wireless carrier to lose subscribers last year. The deal would be worth from $15 to $20 billion.
Adobe has published a pre-release version of a program it calls “Wallaby” – a bridge code that converts Flash video files to HTML5, using JavaScript, CSS, and SVG to produce Flash-like graphics that don’t require plug-ins. The company admits its main goal with Wallaby is to produce output that has the best combination of performance and quality on Apple’s iOS.
Following Cablevision’s successful legal skirmish, Comcast is now looking at deploying a network DVR solution in order to save money on set-top box deployments, reports Light Reading.
Two prominent keynotes were announced yesterday: FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has agreed to give a speech on the morning of April 12 during NAB, while Current Media Chairman and Environmental activist Al Gore has agreed to deliver a keynote during Promax/BDA in late June.
Nearly one in four online American adults (23%) claimed they will be using some form of social media to follow this year’s men’s NCAA Tournament, according to new research from IMRE Sports conducted on their behalf by Harris Interactive. Of that subset, 50% will use social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, 31% will turn to YouTube and 27% will use a mobile app. Those with higher household incomes ($75K+) and college graduates are more likely to use mobile applications and Twitter. And men are more likely to utilize social media channels to kibitz about the tournament, by a margin of 3 (32% of men) to 1 (14% of women.)
Fans are also increasingly watching games online, according to a PC Tools/TNS Global survey, with over 41% citing convenience over TV, followed by less advertising (24.5%), being at work (18.6%) and favoring the interactive capabilities of watching sports online (13.9%).
Google is adding Instant Preview search results, which alloys you to visually compare search results via snapshots of actual web pages, to Android 2.2+ and iOS 4.0+ mobile devices. The feature is now available in 38 languages.
The SXSW festival in Austin will have an official mobile app for the first time this year, courtesy of Vancouver B.C.-based Xomo. Available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7, the app will allow you to navigate multiple sessions at different times, vote on interactive sessions, listen to music and view movie trailers from featured indie films.
CBS’ Metacritic online movie review site has launched its first mobile app for iOS devices. Movie Finder by Metacritic prioritizes current releases by their aggregate critics’ “metascore” and directs you towards theaters and showtimes via zip code or GPS.
Former VP of digital distribution for Paramount Alex Carloss has been hired by YouTube to join the content acquisition team, per AllThingsD. He follows YouTube’s hiring of Malik Ducard, former SVP of digital distribution at Paramount and will work with Robert Kyncl, who left Netflix for YouTube last September.
Online local coupon site LivingSocial tapped former Yahoo executive Mitch Spolan to build out the company’s nationwide sales staff as SVP/National Sales. He will report to COO Eric Eichmann.
Craig Rosenfeld has joined Clash Media as Chief Sales Officer, based in the company’s New York, NY headquarters.
Music Choice has tapped Jason Guarracino for the newly created position of Director of Web & Mobile Application Development, overseeing mobile and web components for all Music Choice properties including SWRV, Video On Demand and Music Channels.
You’ve heard of “Check ins.” What about “Check Outs?” Local business recommendation engine Bizzy has launched a mobile location-based “Check Out” feature, encouraging iPhone and Android users to leave feedback and basic ratings about businesses they visit. (Ratings, noted as “Love it”, “Meh” or “No Thx,” are required and tips or comments are optional.) Bizzy, a subsidy of ReachLocal, accumulates favorite places to recommend to others and relies on an algorithm to match recommendations from users with similar tastes. When you think about it, Bizzy is making an important advance here; who really cares if lots of folks have “checked in” to a place if they don’t end up enjoying the experience. Yelp’s mobile app provides a similar function, enabling you to rate and leave comments about local businesses, but Bizzy’s app is all about recommending places that make sense for you. Of course, it will only be effective if a sizeable crowd provides data – a built in limitation for all of these location-based services.
