Good morning, it’s Wednesday, March 5, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
MySpace founder Brad Greenspan’s LiveVideo.com acquired amateur video publisher Revver.com for an undisclosed amount. Revver was one of the first video sites to begin sharing ad revenue with its creators. But Revver was tripped up in Jan. of 2007 when its proprietary video player stopped working on MySpace. LiveVideo is now claiming that MySpace purposely blocked the player from its site for competitive reasons. (PhotoBucket submissions were also blocked from the social networking site in the weeks leading up MySpace’s acquisition of the photo sharing site.) For Revver the deal comes in a nick of time, as it had burned through its $13 million or so funding.
Local station web solutions provider Broadcast Interactive Media (BIM) signed a deal with Mochila to offer the 120+ local station sites it manages direct access to Mochila’s text, photo and video platform. Mochila syndicates long tail online content integrating its proprietary licensing/management system with an ad revenue sharing solution.
Meanwhile Clear Channel Television’s Inergize Digital Media, which competes with BIM to serve local TV stations’ web needs, signed a deal with Tinbu to provide interactive U.S. gas pricing content to local sites.
MTV Network’s Logo launched a new video player on Logoonline.com featuring a constantly rotating selection of LGBT content from Logo’s library and its team of owned web sites including AfterEllen.com, AfterElton.com, 365gay.com and Downelink.com. TV shows, specials, travel guides, film clips and music videos are among the offerings.
Bravo singed a variety of multiplatform sponsors for the 4th season of Top Chef, offering in-show product integration combined with on air and online components. Verizon Wireless will deliver Top Chef mobisodes and a quickfire challenge to V Cast-enabled phones under the Bravo To Go channel. Michelob will be the official online sponsor.
Hearst Magazines Digital Media signed a deal with widget syndicator Clearspring to add widgets for The Daily Green and Seventeen Magazine, allowing users to embed the content apps into major social networking profiles, aggregators and blog platforms.
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
Consolidation in the social media space continues. Santa Monica, CA.-based Demand Media, led by former MySpace Chairman Richard Rosenblatt, acquired social media platform provider Pluck. The move expands Demand’s network of websites to include more than 200 addition media properties that reach over 100 million users including Fox, Gannett/USA Today, Hearst, Meredith and McGraw Hill. The two platforms will combine toolsets to offer Pluck’s third party clients new revenue sharing applications.
Homepage application aggregator Netvibes launched a new version called Ginger, adding 3rd party widgets from Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Slide to the thousands of widgets it already offers. Ginger also offers sponsored search results for widgets from publishers such as The New York Times, Capitol Music Group, Los Angeles Times, washingtonpost.com, Newsweek, IDG and CondeNet.
Steven Spielberg is preparing to launch a social network to attract users interested in sharing paranormal or extraterrestrial experiences, reports TechCrunch.
Web-based local ad agency Spot Runner acquired online marketer Weblistic in an effort to integrate media planning and buying for TV, radio and online as a turnkey solution. Weblistic developed the platform now used by YellowPages.com and provides paid search advertising, search engine optimization, online video production/distribution and online directory management to local businesses.
Linkstorm launched an agency partnership program to help train ad agencies on its technology designed to improve online click-through rates and improve online brand engagement.
Prime time for online video may be lunchtime, but more companies are finding ways to block online video viewing in the workplace to increase productivity and reduce the drag on office networks, according to the Wall Street Journal.

A new study from Nielsen found 23% (58 million) of all U.S. mobile users have been exposed to advertising in the previous month and half of all mobile data users (28 million) who recall seeing mobile ads during the same period say they responded in some way. Other finding include:
- Teen data users (ages 13–17) were the most likely to recall seeing mobile advertising (46%) recalled seeing some type of mobile ad, compared to 29% of all data users
- Asian-Americans and African-Americans are more likely to recall mobile advertising (42% and 40%, respectively) than all data users
- 26% of those who saw an ad responded at least once by sending an SMS text-message, the most popular ad response.

Initiative appointed Drew Corry to head a new activation unit called Amphibian (get it-half land, half sea) combining traditional and interactive media planning. The group will manage traditional and interactive marketing in the areas of online, digital video, mobile and IPTV for a variety of clients including S.C Johnson, Bayer and Big Lots. Corry will report dually to SVP/Director of Broadcast Kris Magel and VP/Interactive Phil Sloane.
OMD named Jon Raj as Chief Digital Officer, OMD USA, beginning March 31. Jon will report to Page Thompson, CEO of OMD North America, overseeing further integration of OMD’s digital operations into the agency’s core offering.
Facebook hired former VP of Global Online Sales for Google Sheryl Sandberg to replace Owen Van Natta as COO. She will join the company on March 24, 2008 and report directly to Mark Zuckerberg in Palo Alto.
Sports-focused IPTV provider JumpTV added 5 new regional sales directors to its sales team. Mel Adler and Chris Sniffen each join as Director/Ad Sales, Northeast, based in New York City. Diego Victoria will serve as Director/Ad Sales, Multi-Cultural. Stephen Jessop will handle ad sales for Jump’s Cycling TV brand as Director. Brian Farrell was hired as Director/Ad Sales, Midwest and will be based in Chicago.
mtvU is working with college student suicide non-profit The Jed Foundation to compile some amazingly powerful video testimonials on HalfofUs.com about fighting through depression, drug abuse and psychotic tendencies. The site, part of a special month dedicated to mental health programming, manages to keep things real without resorting to shock strategies.
