Hoping to take a bite out of Apple’s huge-iTunes business, Amazon introduced a new cloud-based music system that enables users to store up to 5 gigabytes of photos, video and music on Amazon servers and access them via the Amazon “ cloud player” on the web or via an app on Android devices. (If you buy a digital album from the Amazon store, your locker expands to 20 GB.) The system is decidedly Apple unfriendly, however; iPhone users are still waiting for an app that allows them to play Amazon MP3s. The idea of a digital locker service has been kicking around for years – Apple acquired cloud-based music service Lala in late 2009 only to shut it down and Google previewed its own solution geared for Android devices at its developer’s conference last year but has yet to release anything.
New Corp. is in talks to cede control of its struggling MySpace social network to major label-controlled music video site Vevo.com, according to a Bloomberg report. News Corp., which could combine Vevo’s ad-supported music videos with the music-themed fan pages of its social network, would exchange MySpace for a stake in the new venture.
Crackle, which announced an earlier integration with Google TV, is extending its suite of ad-supported full-length movies and television series to PlayStation 3 consoles, Roku streaming players, Sony’s Blu-ray players and broadband-connected BRAVIA televisions. Sony programs the channel with some 20 new library titles a month from Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems and Sony Pictures Classics.
Starz Digital Media has renewed its animated movie parody web series “How It Should Have Ended” for a second season and will expand the franchise into the video game genre with a new version, “How It Should Have Ended: Video Games”. The web series will be distributed exclusively through Machinima.com’s content network and YouTube channel for 5-weeks. Machinima.com is also helping to develop gaming-themed storylines and scripts.
Video ad company Adap.tv has closed on a $20 million round of financing led by Bessemer Venture Partners with existing investors, including Gemini Israel Funds, Redpoint Ventures and Spark Capital, also participating in the round. Adap.tv says it will use the funding to support international growth, expand product development and strengthen the company’s footprint in the U.S. The company’s ad marketplace is now comprised of more than 4,200 sites reaching over 60 million uniques and delivering more than 1.8 billion video ad views monthly.
Mobile affiliate network MobPartner closed a $3.5 million first round from Alven Capital and Newfund. The platform allows advertisers to pay per a defined action such as sales (Cost per Sale), registration (Cost per Lead) or downloads (Cost per Download/Install).
Taking the wraps off the newest version of its publishing platform, video ad network YuMe introduced a new “Relevance Engine” designed to contextually match ads with appropriate mobile, online or TV content. The system takes into account advertisers’ concerns, publishers’ viewing characteristics and viewers’ demographic info to help publishers maximize the value of their content. New features on the publishing side include the ability to target and sell at different rates across distribution and content categories. 4Kids Entertainment and Funny or Die have both signed on to use the solution.
DoubleVerify introduced a Privacy Manager tool that helps consumers set preferences for how companies use behavioral data to target ads to them online. The tool gives consumers information on hundreds of companies and allows them to opt-out of behavioral advertising or pick and choose which companies can access data about their online experience. It also links to the Digital Advertising Alliance’s (DAA) Advertising Option Icon to provide more info about privacy issues.
CBS Local Digital Media has struck a partnership with City Grid Media to help create a national classified ad market for CBS TV and radio websites across the country. In addition to appearing on CBS sites, listings placed on CBS Local Pages will show up on sites and mobile apps powered by CityGrid’s ad network. The directory will include general business information, editorial and user reviews, insider tips, videos and photos and links to the businesses’ websites.
Echoing comments made by CEO Dan Hesse last week, Sprint released an official statement opposing the AT&T/T-Mobile merger, claiming the deal would create a virtual duopoly of the wireless business in America. If approved, the acquisition would create a company 3 times the size of Sprint, the country’s third largest carrier.
Meanwhile, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman released a statement promising to look into how the merger would impact New York customers and businesses. “Cell phones are no longer a luxury for a few among us, but a basic necessity,” he said in a statement. “The last thing New Yorkers need during these difficult economic times is to see cell phone prices rise.”
The market for smartphones is expected to grow by 50% in 2011 – 4 times faster than the overall mobile phone market – as a variety of cheaper models flood the marketplace, according to a new IDC forecast. Smartphone vendors are expected to ship more than 450 million smartphones in 2011 worldwide, compared to the 303.4 million units shipped in 2010. Android will surpass Symbian as the leading smartphone operating system running 39.5% of all phones in 2011. IDC is also optimistic about the Windows 7 platform, predicting it will undergo a 67% growth rate in the next 4 years to capture over 20% of the market by 2015.

The uptick in online ad spending has not adversely affected the TV ad market and is not expected to for the next few years, according to eMarketer projections. While online ad spending is expected to grow from 15.4% of the total spend in 2009 to over a quarter by 2015, Television spending will hold steady as the dominant medium at around 39% of the ad market. Instead, online will take its share from other competing mediums including newspapers, magazines and print directories.
