Cynopsis: DIGITAL
3/28/07

Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, March 28, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

NBC Universal unveiled its NBCU Digital2Go initiative, designed to push a range of mobile content through various mobile distribution platforms including linear video channels, on demand short and long form programming, mobile web (WAP) sites and messaging. Linear channels will be offered through the MediaFLO mobile service.

  • NBC News2Go features live, full-length simulcasts of Today, Nightly News with Brian Williams, Meet the Press and Hardball with Chris Matthews.
  • Entertainment channel NBC2Go will offer a select number of primetime network and cable shows, including Heroes, The Black Donnellys, Friday Night Lights, and Real Housewives of Orange County.
  • Four new WAP sites will launch for NBC, USA, Bravo and NBC Sports, powered by Crisp Wireless and Starcut USA.

The announcement follows a deal NBC made earlier this month to offer a line-up of full-length primetime broadcast and cable shows such as The Office and Battlestar Galactica on demand through Mobi TV.

CBS Mobile Network officially unveiled its programming lineup for Verizon’s V Cast Mobile TV service. The 24/7 network will feature full-length simulcasts of shows such as the three CSIs, Survivor, Numb3rs, Letterman, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. Live college sporting events from CSTV will be simulcast on the weekends. CBS daytime, late-night, news and prime time programming will also be available on a time-shifted basis. V Cast Mobile TV launched on March 1 at prices ranging from $15 to $25 a month. It is enabled by MediaFLO USA.

MSNBC.com launched its Multimedia on Mobile news product, offering video, photo and text-based news content to Windows Mobile-enabled smartphones. The offering includes NBC News video clips from shows such as Today and This Week in Pictures. Action Engine Corp. and uVu Mobile are the technology providers.

The CW launched America’s Top Model Cycle 8 Mobile Game available on the CW mobile storefront at ( www.cwtv.com ) and an Artificial Life commerce portal to go with it at www.botme.com . Players train an avatar representing one of the show’s participants and take her through modeling challenges based on situations from the show. Depending on the mobile carrier, various interactive features built around the avatar are available. The ANTM game was created by Hong Kong-based Artificial Life and costs $5.99 to download.

VH1‘s original broadband scripted series Home Purchasing Club will launch a second season on http://vspot.vh1.com . The new season will add Jeff Garlin from Curb Your Enthusiasm and David Koechner from The Office to the cast. The series makes fun of home shopping channels and the useless wares they traffic.

The E! True Hollywood Trivia mobile game will test knowledge of celebrity gossip and pop culture. “Hollywood Headliner” can be played with up to four players by passing the phone around. “Daily Dash” poses a new question to the subscriber each day. “Boffo Betting” gives each player $100 of play money to wager with. The game was developed by UIEvolution and will be available for download from next month.

MTVU opened voting on the best unsigned college music acts in the country on www.bestmusiconcampus.com. The winner, determined by popular vote, gets a video, tour and record deal with mtvU/Epic Records. The winner will also premier live on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

AOL will host its third annual virtual Prom Fashion Show with American Idol stylist Miles Siggins. The interactive video special, seen at http://teens.aol.com/style/prom-2007 , pits 18 personalities wearing ensembles from leading designers into three categories and offers teens details about the outfits and chance to buy some of the items.

The Hallmark Channel is launching a new national multiplatform public affairs initiative to promote family co-viewing and connectivity. The “Watch With Me” and the subsequent “Read With Me” initiatives will include on air and online video PSAs as well as partnerships with advertisers, affiliates, schools and local government agencies to help convince families to spend more quality time together.

More than 50 extended interviews with key figures in print, broadcast and digital media are streaming on a dedicated web site built as a companion to PBS’ Frontline News War series. The interviews focus on issues such as White House access, confidential sourcing, media bias and reporting on national security issues. A wealth of web-only features accompany the video, available at http://www.pbs.org/frontline/newswar .

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox and Advance/Newhouse launched “Pivot,” an integrated service that bundles cable, internet, home phone and cell phones under a single bill and allows consumers to use their Sprint mobile phones to perform certain cross-platform interactive functions. Subscribers can use Pivot to watch live and mobile TV, check TV listings, check email and voicemail on both systems, access web sites and make unlimited calls between mobile and home VOIP phones, all under an all-inclusive wireless plan. Sprint is also promising to add the ability program your DVR from your cell phone, a feature already available on AT&T phones. Pivot is currently available in 8 cities (Raleigh, Austin, Boston, Portland, San Diego, Cincinnati and Dayton), and is expected to roll out to 40 metro areas by year-end.

A last-minute meeting at the mound between Major League Baseball and cable and satellite officials was agreed to before a Senate Commerce Committee meeting yesterday, to give cable and Dish TV subscribers one last crack to renegotiate rights for the Extra Innings out of market games. DirecTV negotiated a 7-year, $700 million deal for rights to the games and part ownership of the planned MLB channel, which cable providers and EchoStar have yet to match.

Made for mobile television content creator and distributor GoTV Networks received strategic investments from Motorola Ventures, the equity arm of Motorola and Qualcomm.

Bertelsmann reached an agreement with the EMI Group, the last major record company that had sued it for copyright infringement after it provided financial backing to Napster. The German media conglomerate was days away from a court appearance on the issue of aiding Napster users to swap pirated music over its peer-to-peer network.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Yahoo is creating a new mobile advertising network to help online publishers customize their content for use on mobile platforms. The network will also help publishers ensure its content shows up in Yahoo’s new mobile search tool, called oneSearch. Yahoo plans to start delivering text-based and video ads to third-party mobile web sites by the summer.

KickApps announced a new version of its hosted platform designed to add social media functionality to any web site. Its tools can help web masters integrate user generated content, video, web cam applications and social networking features to sites to help create new branding opportunities for advertisers. KickApps also serves targeted ads to groups of relevant sites and audiences.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Viewers of web-based video ads displayed higher brand awareness and were less distracted than those who watched commercials on air or on air using a DVR, according to a new study by MillwardBrown. TV and DVR viewing resulted in 54 percent brand awareness compared to 82 percent for online commercial viewing. The differences in brand recall were even more staggering: 18 percent for TV viewing and 19 percent for DVR viewing versus 77 percent recall for online viewing. ABC, NBC and Fox were among the programmers who participated in the study.

Ringtone sales will be down 8 percent in 2007 according to Broadcast Music Inc., a U.S. performing right organization that represents more than 6.5 million musical works. BMI projects $550 million in retail ringtone sales this year, compared to $600 million in 2006.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Chairman and CEO of NetFlix Reed Hastings agreed to join the Microsoft board of directors, which has increased in size from 9 to 10 members.

Avenue A/Razorfish, a unit of aQuantive, promoted Colin Kinsella to President of the West region. He will oversee all the agency’s areas of concentration, including analytics, strategy, delivery, media buying and creative in the Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles offices. He reports to Clark Kokich, Worldwide President.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

If you liked the Onion Network News, check out www.theointment.com . It’s a three-minute “topical” comedy news show hosted by Steve Tatham skewering celebrities, politicians and scientists in the news each weekday. It’s very quick, cutting and surprisingly well written, with a decidedly liberal bias. Since launching in 2006, the site has broadcast more than 250 episodes, streamed more than two million times. By the way, Wednesday is guest day; today’s guest is comedian Jimmy Burns.

Thanks to: Tracy Howard-Gibbs, VP, JAG Entertainment, Sherman Oaks, CA.

A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
