Cynopsis: DIGITAL


Good morning, it’s Wednesday, March 26, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The open source movement continues. Yahoo joined Google‘s OpenSocial alliance after sitting on the fence for the first few months of its existence. The two companies also announced plans to form the nonprofit OpenSocial Foundation to advance specification developments and insure programming standards remain in the hands of a neutral party. It is believed Yahoo held back on joining the alliance because it worried Google held too much control over intellectual property created by the group.


New platforms require new forms of programming. MTV announced three short-form projects that will play across multiple branded platforms including the network’s linear channels.

  • Claymation series Anton & Crapbag, created by Celebrity Deathmatch’s Eric Fogel and inspired by Jackass, will show up on MTV’s VCast channel and on MTV2
  • North Palm Wrestling relies on high-school age satire and absurdity, premiering on the web last month and on MTV last night
  • Total Request Live host Damien Fahey brings Damien’s Other Show, man-on-the-street comedy sketches to the MTV Mobile service (available on multiple carriers) and
  • hoodFAB, originally a hip hop trivia game show for wireless, showed up on MTV2 and MTV Jams last week and will continue to be available on the latter

DIC Entertainment subsidiary DIC Music launched a new online music production business as a one-stop, royalty-free music shop. Producers can purchase affordable music for all media productions including animation, commercials, live-action, home video, video games and local station themes.
Kung-fu star David Carradine will launch the new Hallmark Movie Channel HD on April 2 in the 4-hour Hallmark Original Movie event Son of the Dragon.
Voom’s Equator HD channel unveiled three new series in development:

  • Actor/director Mario Van Peebles will try to lure viewers into watching his family strive to live an environmentally conscious lifestyle in Mario’s Green House, premiering in 2009
  • The 4-part series Natural Born Traveler chronicles the walkabout of Aussie Steve Crombie from Mount Elephen to Dingo’s Knob, Australia, premiering Oct. 3, 2008
  • The Monkey Thieves follows a pack of lawless urban monkeys attempting to scrounge a living in Jaipur, India, premiering Oct. 7, 2008

Tribune Media Services announced the launch of a new political commentary magazine called “Opinionated: Voices and Viewpoints on America and the World”, to be distributed exclusively on the Amazon Kindle eBook.
Starz Entertainment and Manga Entertainment signed a deal to distribute a selection of original entertainment titles through the iTunes store. Look for episodes of Head Case and Hollywood Residential from Starz and anime titles Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Tactics from Manga Ent.
Northstar Media acquired worldwide television, VOD, mobile, and broadband rights to a package of 21 IMAX films including Into The Deep and Blue Planet, marking the first time that all 21 titles have been made available for these outlets.
Minyanville‘s animated Wall Street financial show News & Views, which airs weekly on the Fox Business Network, can now be seen on MySpaceTV.


Playlist sharing facilitator Imeem became the latest social media site to release a software development kit for programmers, joining fellow OpenSocial members Bebo and MySpace. The idea is to entice developers to tap into imeem’s licensed library of songs from major labels to create original music apps.
Web 2.0 entertainment site signed distribution deals with Revision3 and 60 Frames, providing an online outlet for all original series produced by the two outfits in exchange for a share of ad revenue. Revision3 is best known for shows like beer-enhanced webcast Diggnation or popSiren. G.I.L.F. is the latest 60 Frames comedy, currently in its 4th episode.
Video search platform ClipBlast and white label social media platform KickApps announced an integration to enable users of the new Yuku KickApps platform to search and preview video from the ClipBlast library.


ESPN acquired Girls High School Basketball site Basketball columnist and founder Glenn Nelson will continue to manage the site’s content and editorial voice and Chris Hansen, the National Director of Scouting for Women’s Basketball at, will continue to write for the site.


The network relies on users for its content, why not its ads? Al Gore-backed Current launched a user generated ad messaging campaign in the UK for Telefonica division 02. Viewers are encouraged to create a 60-second spot for O2’s “Bluebook: Nothing is Lost” campaign. Creators whose commercials are selected to run on the network or receive 1,000 British pounds and up to 25,000 if utilized elsewhere.


Traffic to TV portals dipped in February following the launch of Hulu, according to Nielsen Online data interpreted by THR. AOL Television finished #1 with 10.5 million unique visitors, followed by Yahoo TV (9.6 million uniques) and MSN TV (6.8 million uniques). The cancelled Jericho was the most streamed show on MSN (so that’s where viewers were catching it,) while American Idol helped drive traffic to the MySpaceTV portal.
March Madness continued its record setting pace over the weekend, according to, as live video and audio streaming already surpassed totals for the entire 2007 tourney.

  • Daily unique visitors totaled 3.3 million (+129% from ’07)
  • Live video & audio streaming equaled 3.7 million hours (+36% over the entire ’07 event)
  • 3.6 million fans are playing CBS Sports bracket games on sites like Facebook (+62%)
  • So far the Georgia/Xavier game on 3/20/08 had the largest # of total hours of consumption, a record 376,000 for a single game.

A generational divide is forming between the affluent baby boomers and their millennial offspring pointing to the growing importance of reaching out to younger audiences on emerging platforms, according to a new study by Millward Brown commissioned by Hallmark Channel:

  • Only 31% of millennials believe new television technologies are complicated and difficult to use vs. over half (55%) of boomers
  • 45% of millennials who have a DVR use it regularly/fairly often vs. under one quarter of boomers (24%) 
  • 87% of millennials who have a DVR say they regularly fast forward through commercials and are more likely to be switching channels and multi-tasking while the television is on, indicating they are less focused than boomers
  • Millennials are also more than twice as likely as boomers to consider buying a DVR next year (11% boomers vs. 25% millennials).
  • Over one quarter (27%) of millennials go to websites to watch video vs. only 9% of boomers
  • Millennials are more likely (52%) to consider mobile devices as forms of entertainment vs. boomers (35%) 



Former Google Director of Social Media Ethan Beard became the latest executive to leave Google for Facebook. He will serve as Director of Business Development, according to TechCruch.

was named Executive Director of the Open Mobile Video Coalition, the alliance of commercial and public broadcasters formed to accelerate the development of mobile digital television broadcasting in the US.
NetShelter hired Bret Hennington to serve as Regional Sales Director for The San Francisco Bay Area, reporting to Todd Carville, SVP/Sales.
Faith & Values Media appointed Greg Nelson to the newly created position of Director, Television & New Media. He will be based in the company’s New York City headquarters.

Putting video up on the web is one thing. Creating a compelling user interface around a specific topic is quite another. Too often the UI is overlooked or inadequate. The web team of PBS’ Frontline has done a great job of combining years of clips, slideshows, timelines, maps, reporters’ blog entries and other resources to form an online companion to its Bush’s War special, which aired on Monday and Tuesday on PBS.
