Cynopsis: Kids!
03/24/10

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 24, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. And a reminder, coming out this morning is the first installment of the Cynopsis Media Presents Upfront series – this one concentrating on the Kids Upfront 2010.  That should show up in your inbox around 930 ET this morning, as well as on our website.

Moonscoop will debuts its first live-action kid series, Super Sportlets (26×11) at MIPTV next month.  A co-production with Kids Workout Factory (Holland) and Telegael (Ireland), the series is targeted to K9-5 and features live-action characters against a CGI animated background.  The sports-centric series revolves around a group of four teenage aliens as they chase after a bad guy that wants to make all kids into couch potatoes.  The series will feature special guest appearances by various popular athletes.  The series is set to be available later this year.  Moonscoop will handle worldwide distribution for the series, with the exception of the Benelux where Kids Workout Factory will oversee distribution.

Summit Entertainment has another Twilight sized bite over the weekend with the Friday night release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon on DVD, selling 4 million units over the course of the weekend, per Entertainment Weekly.  The studio’s DVD release of Twilight, the first movie, in 2009 raked in 3.8 million in its first weekend and a total of 9.2 million, making the best selling DVD of last year.  To support the New Moon DVD midnight release there were parties at numerous retailers, including Walmart offering an exclusive Ultimate Fan Edition of the DVD, screening parties and of course the studio also dispatched members of the Twilight cast to various locations.  The third movie in the series, Eclipse, will open on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, just ahead of the July 4 holiday weekend.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Sardine Productions, a animation/production company, enters into a development deal with Societe Radio Canada (French CBC) to develop a new animated series MIA (52×11) from interactive software company Kutoka Interactive, also based in Montreal.  The series revolves around the adventures of Mia the mouse as sets out on explorations in the old Victorian house where she and her grandmother live.

Angryfilms (Real Steel, all three Transformers movies) picks up the movie option to the young adult novel Little Brother (2008) by author/blogger Cory Doctorow, per THR.  The book revolves around Marcus, a high school senior, in the aftermath of a terrorist attack on San Francisco during which he and his friends are caught up in world of the Department of Homeland Security.  After being interrogated and tortured, Marcus heads back into the city that is now under complete surveillance, a la George Orwell’s Big Brother, and he begins a revolution online to save the city.  Angryfilms’ Don Murphy and partner Susan Montford will serve as producers on the movie and are currently looking for a director and writers.  Doctorow, who supports the easing of copyright laws, launched the book by offering it for free ( www.craphound.com ), though you can also buy the book.  A paperback version of Little Brother will be published next month by Tor Teen, which is an imprint of Tom Doherty Associates.

Chris Evans (Human Torch/Johnny Storm in Fox’s Fantastic Four movies) will take on the role of Captain America/Steve Rogers in at least three Captain America movies from Marvel Studios, per Heat Vision.  There is still no confirmation from Marvel on this news.  The first movie on the movies is The First Avenger: Captain America, directed by Joe Johnston from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and set for release on July 22, 2011.  The movie will also feature Hugo Weaving as the evildoer Red Skull.  Evans will also play Captain America in The Avengers, which will also star Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Edward Norton as the Incredible Hulk, which is slated for a May 4, 2012 release.

Popeye is getting a 3D CGI animated feature film makeover by Sony, per VarietyAvi Arad, who previously partnered with Sony on the Spider-Man movies, is producing the movie.  Negotiations are underway with writer Mike Jones to pen the script.  A Sony Pictures Animation movie, the CG will be handled by Sony Pictures ImageWorks.  While the storyline is being kept quiet, the movie will include Olive Oyl, Bluto and Swee’Pea.  Created by E.C. Segar, Popeye made his first appearance in the popular comic strip Thimble Theater in 1929.  King Features Syndicated, a unit of Heart Entertainment and Syndication, now controls the property.

MORE KIDS STUFF

When kids tune into Nickelodeon’s 23rd Annual Kids’ Choice Awards this Saturday, March 27 at 8p, live from UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, they won’t be disappointed as the show has a cavalcade of celebrities lined up as presenters/performers.  Just ahead of the big show, Lily Collins and Jeff Sutphen (Brainsurge) will host the Countdown to Kids’ Choice! live pre-show, 6p-8p, covering everything going on along the Orange Carpet and in the cyber lounge.  Ashley Argota and Matt Shively (both from True Jackson VP) will also host a webcast portion of the pre-show from 7p on Nick.com ( www.nick.com ). In addition to host Kevin James, the show will include appearances by Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Katy Perry, Robert Downey Jr., Cory Monteith, Miranda Cosgrove, Keke Palmer, Lea Michele, Chris Rock, Jackson Rathbone, Jaden Smith, Jonah Hill, Queen Latifah, Jackie Chan, Dev Patel, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, John Cena and Olympic medalists Shaun White (snowboarder) and Apolo Anton Ohno (speed skater), among many others.  Eight-time medalist Ohno will attempt to set a new world for being catapulted into slime via a slingshot.  Kids can vote online now at www.nick.com/kca10 in a total of 19 categories.  Kids also will be able to vote via the Nick mobile website (wap.nick.com) and through a KCA iPhone app.

Nickelodeon Australia will launch its new branding, as part of Nickelodeon Networks’ global re-brand, in conjunction with its broadcast of the US Kids’ Choice Awards on Sunday, March 28 at 6:30p.  This year marks Nick Australia’s 15the year.  The Australian Nick Jr. channel will switchover to its new logos Sunday at midnight, with the other lines of business (consumer products, recreation and theatrical) rolling out in phases though the end of the year.

awol animation Paris enters into a distribution deal with Little Airplane Productions for the short-form eco-friendly preschool series Tobi! (4×4).  Produced by Little Airplane Production the hand drawn series of visual poems is about a little boy named Tobi who wants to make his world a better place.  Tobi will be offered by awol animation at MIPTV.

John Tartaglia, creator/star of Disney’s Johnny and the Sprites, and a member of the original cast of Avenue Q, has written a new kid/family-aimed off-Broadway musical Johan Tartaglia’s ImaginOcean ( www.imaginoceanthemusical.com ).  Set underwater, ImaginOcean is a black light puppet adventure that follows three fish friends, Tank, Bubbles and Dorsel, as they search for clues to a secret treasure.  The musical is currently in previews and opens March 31, 2010 at New World Stages in New York City.

MARKETING/LICENSING

PBS Kids names Happy Kid Toy Group as its master toy licensee to launch a new line of preschool-targeted educational toys.  Under the multi-year licensing deal the new PBS Kids toy line will debut in 2011 at a range of retailers (e.g. including specialty stores, catalogue, internet, department stores and major mass retailers).  The line will feature craft and activity sets, science sets and role-play games and will be packaged with information for about play ideas for parents/caregivers interaction.  PBS will invest the revenue earned from the project into the creation of the next generation of educational content for kids.  Additionally, PBS Kids and Happy Kid Toy Group worked with Big Boing to help create an educational experience that delivers on the PBS KIDS promise through toys.

HIT Entertainment launches its new AngelinaBallerina.com ( www.angelinaballerina.com) and recently launched an app, Dress Up With Angelina Ballerina, for iPhone/iPod Touch.  Targeted to Girl 3-7, the new website features new features such as webcam games, personalization, videos and a sing-a-long music player.  HIT partnered with the web/mobile developer Mammalfish and Whistlebox on the website.  HIT collaborated with SmartFish to create the app.

Cookie Jar Entertainment and Mill Creek Entertainment enter into a multi-year home entertainment pact.  Under the deal Mill Creek will release a number of Cookie Jar’s animated programs on DVD, beginning with some never before released on DVD including The Busy World of Richard Scarry and Wimzie’s House in second half of 2010.  Further DVDs will feature World of Quest, Super Duper Sumos, Mona the Vampire and Nanoboy.

This week marks Activision Publishing, GameMill Publishing and Cepia‘s release of Zhu Zhu Pets for Nintendo DS.  The initial release of the game includes a Collectors’ Edition baby Zhu Zhu hamster named Baxter.  Based on Cepia’s hugely popular Zhu Zhu Pets toys, the game lets players care for and play with their favorite hamsters and lead them through 30+ different game levels in various modes of transportation.  Players can also provide their hamsters with snacks, exercise, sleep and, of course, love.
