Ashley Herbert gets a second chance at finding love from ABC when she stars as the next “Bachelorette” premiering May 23 at 9p.  Herbert just appeared on the 15th edition of The Bachelor starring Brad Womack and after not being “the one” she will star in the seventh edition of The Bachelorette.  Following its premiere, The Bachelorette will move to its regular time period of Mondays at 8p starting May 30.  Chris Harrison hosts The Bachelorette produced by Next Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Television.

Repurposing old clothes into fashion statements, Shareen Mitchell, owner of the boutique, Shareen Vintage is the focus of Planet Green’s new reality series, Dresscue Me.  The series follows Shareen as she manages her shops in Los Angeles and New York City and serves her customers including celebrities Katy Perry and Cat Deeley by offering fashion-forward and affordable frocks.  Dresscue Me premieres April 19 at 1030p and is produced by World of Wonder.

Joan and Melissa Rivers will be back for a second season of WE tv’s original one-hour series Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?  WE tv renewed the series with a 10-episode order slated to debut in January 2012.  WE tv and ZOO Productions are behind the series set in Los Angles where Joan lives with her daughter Melissa, Melissa’s live-in boyfriend and her grandson, Cooper.

VH1 commits to a third season of Basketball Wives set to debut this June.  The third season follows the high-profile pro basketball players wives and ex-wives as they delve into their own careers and lean on each other for support.  Shed Media produces the series.

Next month, Cooking Channel serves up two new series:

  • Eat Street – Comedian James Cunningham seeks out food trucks selling street food.  Premieres April 12 at 8p.
  • Unique Sweets – Series features the sweetest desserts and unique eateries.  Premieres April 24 at 1030p.

Commercial-free Create TV also has a pair of new series on tap for April:

  • Greece: Quest for the Gods – Adventurer Richard Bangs presents his seventh and eighth editions of his Adventures With Purpose travel series, this time exploring Athens, Olympia, Ithaca and Mount Olympus. Series opens April 12.  Richard will also be seen in Hong Kong: Quest For the Dragon in April.  American Public Television distributes Richard Bangs’ Adventures With Purpose.
  • The Cooking Odyssey – Culinary travel series offers the tastes and sights of Greece hosted by chef and public health consultant Yannis Mameletzis.  Series launches April 21 and is distributed by NETA.

Create TV is available nationally on 235 public television stations (check local listings for airtimes of both series.)

In time for Earth Day in early April, Documentary Channel (DOC) launches the first episode of a three-part series titled The Future of Water on April 3 at 830p.  The trio of documentary episodes, directed by Erik Hannemann and Anders Taylor Larsen, examines the relationship between humans and water and how nations globally deal with the challenges.  The remaining two episodes will air consecutive Sundays on April 10 and 17 at 830p.  Terje Tvedt wrote the series and also hosts.  DOC is mostly available via DISH Network and DIRECTV.

TLC is gearing up for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29 and is partnering with ITV Studios America to offer a week-long Royal-themed lineup just prior to the royal nuptials.  TLC’s “Royal Wedding Week” schedule includes:

  • Say Yes to the Dress: Princess Brides Special: April 22 at 9p. Halfyard Productions produces.
  • Charles and Di: Once Upon a Time: April 24 at 7p. ITV Studios America produces.
  • Untold Stories of a Royal Bridesmaid (wt): April 24 at 9p – Hour-long special showcases Princess Diana’s bridesmaid, India Hicks as she revisits the 1981 wedding between Prince Charles and Princess Diana with others who were there.  From Magilla Entertainment.
  • Royally Astounding: 30 Defining Days of the Monarchy (wt): April 24 at 10p – Documentary showcases 30 key dates in the life of the British royal family over the last 30 years. Produced by ITV Studio America.
  • Wild About Prince Harry: April 25 at 10p. Produced by ITV Studios America.
  • What the Sell?! Royal Episodes: April 26 at 10p. From Leftfield Productions.
  • Extreme Royal Collections: April 27 at 10p. ITV Studios America produces.
  • The Making of a Royal Wedding: April 28 at 8p and Countdown to the Royal Wedding: April 28 at 9p both from ITV Studios America.
  • TLC’s Royal Wedding Coverage: April 29 – Live coverage of the Royal Wedding commences at 5a with a rebroadcast of the wedding airing from 9a to 1p.  Encores of the wedding will air on April 29 at 8p and also on April 30.  Produced by ITV Studios America.

Reality series Sister Wives on TLC delivered 2.2 million total viewers and 1.0 million W18-49 viewers for its Sunday at 9p second season premiere episode.

ESPN picked up multi-media rights to Spain’s top soccer events, Copa del Rey Final airing on April 20 at 330p and the Spanish Supercopa later in August.  Live television, radio and online coverage will be available via ESPN Deportes, ESPN Deportes Radio and ESPN3.com.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Broadway’s Kristen Chenoweth (Wicked, Promises Promises) lands a role on ABC’s drama pilot Good Christian Bitches.  The project is in development at ABC from Darren Star.  Chenoweth portrays Darlene in the primetime soap set in Dallas.  Previously cast for the drama include Leslie Bibb as Amanda; Jennifer Aspen as Sharon; Annie Potts as Gigi; Miriam Shor as Cricket; and Marisol Nicholas as Heather.

HBO plans to keep Chloe Sevigny (Big Love) in sight as the actress signed to star as the notorious Lizzie Borden in a miniseries in development for the premium network.  Sevigny will not only star in the title role but she will serve as co-executive producer for Lizzie Borden along with Playtone’s Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman who will executive produce.  Lizzie Borden will likely be a two-part, four-hour miniseries.

September Films, owned by DCD, produces WE tv’s series Bridezillas and just received an order for 23 new hours for the show’s eighth season set to air starting middle of this year. Bridezillas has a total of 150 hours and is distributed globally by international sales company DCD Rights.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:   FOX topped Saturday night among A18-49 at 1.6/6, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  FOX led at 8p with a double dose of Cops episodes averaging a 1.6/6 and ABC’s repeat Wipeout took out second place with a 0.9/3.  FOX held its own in first place during 9p with AMW: America Fights Back at 1.7/6 and Univision’s weekly staple Sabado Gigante was next at 1.0/3.  NBC’s Law & Order: SVU encore won at 10p with a 1.1/4 followed by CBS with a combination of Crimetime Saturday and a 48 Hours Mystery rerun averaging a 1.0/4.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS had the winning lineup Sunday night at 2.5/7 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos and CBS’ 60 Minutes tied for #1 at 7p with 1.7/6 each and NBC’s Dateline and the average of FOX’s repeat comedies The Simpsons and American Dad shared #2 at 1.1/4 each.  ABC’s Secret Millionaire gained the top spot at 8p with a 2.8/8 though just a tenth of a rating point ahead of CBS’ Amazing Race at 2.7/8.  The light shone on CBS during 9p as Undercover Boss won at 3.0/8 while NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice placed second at 2.6/7.  Then at 10p, NBC had a turn in the winner’s seat as Celebrity Apprentice claimed #1 for its second hour with a 3.0/9 and CBS’ CSI: Miami trailed at 2.7/7.

Monday A18-49 Analysis:  ABC attracted more A18-49 viewers Monday night while posting a 4.6/13, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  The season finale of The Bachelor pivoted ABC into first place at 8p with a 4.1/12 followed by regular time period winner House on FOX at 3.5/10.  ABC continued to romance viewers during 9p with the last half of The Bachelor at a 5.0/14 and the average of CBS’ repeat sitcoms Two and a Half Men and Mike & Molly came next at 2.4/7.  Furthermore, during the 8p and 9p hours, ABC’s The Bachelor conclusion delivered 13.8 million total viewers. ABC polished off a clean sweep at 10p with The Bachelor: After the Final Rose special at 4.7/13 and CBS’ encore Hawaii Five-O was #2 at 2.0/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Previous FCC Chairman Michael Powell appointed President of NCTA, replacing President Kyle McSlarrow who is departing in April to join Comcast in Washington.  Michael will begin his new position with NCTA on April 25.  Since his FCC days, Michael is currently Chairman of the MKPowell Group and a Senior Adviser to Providence Equity Partners.

UK-based September Films, owned by DCD, promoted Richard Hansil to the newly-created role as SVP/Creative and elevated Pamela Covais to SVP/Production.  Both Richard and Pamela are based at the September Films USA office at Tribeca West Studios in Los Angeles.  Richard, in his new role, will manage all facets of production and development for September Films’ growing state-side office. Pamela in her new position will continue as Managing Director of September Films USA. 

Donny Hudson named VP/Sales with Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS) – Radio/TV/Digital and Entertainment.  Donny will oversee the growth and revenue streams across all company divisions.  Donny will additionally serve as Sales Manager for WXDJ-El Zol 95.7 FM and WRAZ-La Raza 106.3 FM, radio stations owned by SBS in South Florida.

Susie Toma advances to NSM with WPXI-PCNC/Pittsburgh, owned by Cox.  Previously, Susie was an AE at WPXI and before that she was with WGN-TV in Chicago for 11 years. 

Alliance, the entertainment and lifestyle marketing agency division of Grey Group in New York, hired Danielle Kimiatek as Public Relations Manager.  Before joining Alliance, Danielle was an AE at Dan Klores Communications. 

Michelina Gauthier upped to SVP/Talent Business and Legal Affairs with Discovery Communications.  Michelina will continue to supervise talent agreements on behalf of Discovery’s roster of networks and now her duties will expand to encompass management for Ad Sales talent integration deals.  She reports to Lee Bartlett, EVP/Global Production Management, Business and Legal Affairs.

AdLarge Media, LLC named Michelle Jennings as EVP/Digital Revenue.  Michelle joins the newly-formed AdLarge Media from Westwood One where she served as Director/Interactive Sales.

Multi-platform Disney XD Worldwide promoted David Levine to VP/Programming and GM where he will oversee the entity and concentrate on its future growth.  David will report to Carolina Lightcap, President, Disney Channels Worldwide in his role as GM and to Paul DeBenedittis, SVP/Programming Strategy, Disney Channels Worldwide for his program planning and scheduling duties.
