Cynopsis: DIGITAL
06/09/10
Good morning, it’s Wednesday, June 9, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
A group of Japanese and U.S. publishers have formed a coalition to try and combat rampant internet piracy plaguing the manga industry by working together to identify and report culprits to the Justice Dept., the FBI and other law enforcement agencies. “Scanlation,” digital scanning and translation of manga material without the consent of copyright holders, has been slowly eroding print sales in Japan and abroad and the emergence of new devices such as the iPad is only exacerbating the problem; manga publishers are eager to monetize such platforms but are reluctant to invest until piracy is curtailed. Participants in the coalition include the 36 members of Japan’s Digital Comic Association, Square Enix, VIZ Media, TOKYOPOP, Vertical, Inc., the Tuttle-Mori Agency and Yen Press.
Sony’s online video portal Crackle is spreading its wings to international shores, launching new sites in The UK and Australia. Crackle’s original shows, such as “The Esquire Digital Man” and “The Groundlings,” are also distributed via a proprietary player pre-packaged with ads to partner sites including AOL, Bebo, Boxee, Break, Dailymotion, Friendster, Metacafe and YouTube – not to mention via Sony’s Bravia broadband enabled TV sets.
Amazon’s movie credit database IMDB.com continues to slowly build out its consumer-facing features, striking an agreement with MovieTickets.com to provide online ticketing to local movie showings. (MovieTickets is a joint venture between multiple exhibitors: AMC Entertainment, Hollywood Media Corp., National Amusements, Cineplex Entertainment, Marcus Theatres, Viacom and Time Warner.) As part of the deal, West World Media will be the exclusive provider of movie showtimes on the site.
CNN.com relaunched its Tech section yesterday to make it more trend-conscious and social networking-focused. Content can be filtered by categories and beats, including Social Media, Mobile, Web, Gaming & Gadgets, Innovation and Tech Biz.
Turner Sports’ NBA.com site attracted 2.1 million unique visitors for its coverage of game two of the Lakers/Celtics finals series, an increase of 20% vs. last year’s game two coverage. The site also served over 25.1 million page views (+24%) and 4.7 million video streams (+82%).
IAC’s comedic site CollegeHumor.com has struck a partnership with Pepsi’s SoBe brand to create a series of branded entertainment videos for distribution on the web, TV and mobile with 5 shows already in the can. The latest, hidden camera show “Mr. Vicarious,” premiers today, coinciding with SoBe’s redesign of its Elixir and Tea bottles. Comedians Paul Scheer and Nick Kroll “re-skin” themselves and live vicariously through three actors dressed up as different characters, including a karate sensei, a massage therapist and a caricature artist.
The Onion announced plans at the Mashable Media Summit to introduce a new online show that reports on fake news from the future – the year 2137 to be exact. The idea is to highlight current issues by spoofing events that may happen in the future if they’re not fixed.
The Seattle International Film Festival is trying to keep up with technological advances this year, screening the Australian environmentally themed documentary “Cane Toads: The Conquest,” in 3D, along with “The Wildest Dream,” a film about Conrad Anker’s discovery of climber George Mallory’s frozen remains on Mount Everest, showing this weekend in the IMAX format. But so far it’s the old school revivals that have captured the imagination of the locals. The 1925 Tom Mix silent Western “Riders of the Purple Sage,” screened earlier in the fest to a sold out crowd with a live original score by local band The Maldives. The 1916 silent classic “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” was also revived with live musical accompaniment.
Panache is partnering with Publicis’ Vivaki unit and other partners to launch a new online video ad format in Sept. and to help standardize the technology pipeline for online video ad delivery. The new “ASq” format, (aka Hulu’s Ad Selector – found to be the most engaging by The Pool research coalition – allows users to select one of three ads to view before the main video rolls. The ads will be served by a new group called The Rising Tide Co-Op, made up of companies such as Vivaki, Vindico, Visible Measures and Tidal TV. Publishers interested in supporting the format must integrate their video players to Panache’s platform, the only vendor to date working on the publisher’s side.
Adobe is teaming with mobile ad network Greystripe on an HTML5 workaround for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad to provide advertisers with an alternative to Apple’s new iAd unit. Not only can the ads be authored with Adobe’s Flash authoring tools, but they’ll be priced at a fraction of the cost of the expensive iAd format, according to Greystripe. Units will come in both expandable banner and full-screen interstitial formats.
Semantic advertising company Peer39 is partnering with yield optimization platform AdMeld to enable AdMeld’s publishers, ad networks and exchange customers to gain insights from semantic targeting to improve the matches between ads and content/sentiment. Peer39 claims the ability to process up to 1,000 URLs per second, improving advertisers’ ability to target by analyzing meaning and sentiment in addition to straight demographic info.
The IAB is forming its first ever “Tablet Task Force” to study the impact of devices like the Kindle and the iPad. The IAB also unveiled a new on demand educational program produced by ScribeMedia.org to provide training on the fundamentals and latest tools, techniques and best practices in interactive advertising. Online seminars are priced $95/each.
Dublin-based provider of transaction-management solutions Openet, rumored last month to be takeover target of Cisco, has landed a deal to become the back office platform supporting AT&T’s 3G iPad service in the U.S. Openet’s Subscriber Initiated Provisioning and Service Pass solutions will enable AT&T to modulate its data plans as announced last week.
Mobile Streams has teamed up with Indian gaming company UTV Indiagames to distribute mobile content to network operators throughout India as well as via the mobile internet.
Online advertising will grow by 12.4% this year to $61 billion and by 64% over the subsequent 5 years to $100 billion, according to new report from IPG’s Mediabrands’ Magna Global. Search, which now accounts for roughly half of the world’s $30 billion online ad market, will continue to be the leading format attracting marketers, with this performance-based media climbing by 16.5% in 2009. Latin America will continue to be the fastest growing region, expected to be up 13.3% annually through 2015.
Here’s a reason to hang on to your unlimited iPhone data plan from AT&T: Netflix is preparing to launch 3G/WiFi streaming video app for the App Store, free for Netflix subscribers who pay $8.99/month or more.
Since iPhone users seem to continue to be stuck with AT&T, we though we’d share some more details on AT&T’s policies for the upcoming iPhone 4:
- 3GS iPhone users will be able to upgrade to the new iPhone on June 24 if they spend $100 or more on service and have had the phone for 12-18 months
- Current customers will be able to keep their unlimited data plans even if they upgrade to the new iPhone 4
- The upcoming $20/month tethering option that allows you to share your $25/mo. 2GB data plan with other devices will not work with the iPad
- Here’s a nifty shortcut to keep track of your data usage on iPhone (besides going into the settings menu): type in *DATA# (*3282#) on your keypad then hit “dismiss” and AT&T will send you a text message telling you how much data and messaging you have left
Turner Sports‘ SportsNOW app will offer coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The app features social media integration and a Live Tournament Bracket with up to date scores and stats.
Discovery Channel COO Tom Cosgrove has been named President and GM of the joint venture between Sony, Discovery and IMAX established to develop a 24/7 dedicated 3D television network. He will oversee all business and creative areas of the joint venture. Rebecca Glashow, SVP/Digital Distribution for Discovery Communications, will oversee distribution for the channel.
Media Storm has tapped Carly Miller as Associate Director, Interactive. She recently joined the agency as Interactive AMD and will be responsible for digital strategy and buying across a broad range of entertainment and retail clients. Carly reports to Jeremy Cornfeldt, Media Storm’s Managing Director/Digital.
ChaCha has added Brian Liebler as Director of Sales and Cydney Springer as Senior Account Executive to its New York office. Both are newly created jobs, reporting to Steve Goldstein, ChaCha’s Chief Revenue Officer.
During its developer’s conference this week Apple quietly unveiled the 5th major version of its Safari web browser, available for both Mac and PC users. Apple has always bragged that Safari is faster than competing browsers and the new version, powered by the “Nitro Java” engine, claims a 30% speed increase over Safari 4. It will support full-screen playback of H.264 videos, geolocation, sectioning elements, drag and drop, HTML5 form validation and other features already supported by Firefox, Chrome and Opera. But the killer app here is the small, gray “Reader” button that appears in the URL bar when you land on a news site or blog. Click on it and Safari removes all of the clutter on the page including ads, widgets, sidebars, etc., presenting only the text in a large, cleanly formatted typeface. Safari currently enjoys a 10.43% market share in the U.S., far behind Microsoft Explorer (63.2%) and Firefox (20.38%) according to researcher NetMarketShare. This could Apple finally grab a bigger foothold if this functionality catches on with consumers. Then again the backlash from the advertising community, which Apple has been diligently courting for its new iAd platform, could be palpable. No wonder why Steve Jobs didn’t profile Safari 5 during his keynote on Monday.
