Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, June 6, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Joost hopes they found the man to create on online masterpiece. The much-hyped P2P video start-up named former Cisco senior executive Michelangelo “Mike” Volpi as its new CEO. Still in beta testing, Joost has been used by a half a million viewers and now features more than 100 channels of content. Volpi said he intends to make Joost available on a variety of platforms – cable set-tops, mobile phones, etc. – and is working to license prime time content from the major broadcast networks in an interview with The New York Times. Mr. Vopli is something of a globetrotter; he was born in Milan, grew up in Japan, and will work from the company’s headquarters in London.

BravoTV.com and OUTzoneTV.com will premier four new web-exclusive series this month. My Life on the Z-List: Jen’s Vlog is already up on BravoTV.com, a companion piece to the Kathy Griffin show from comedian Billy Eichner. Launching on June 13 on BravoTV is Miami Spice: Hot Recipes with Latin Flavor and Top Recipe: The Wong Way to Cook, following episodes of Top Chef 3 Miami. Beginning in mid-June on OUTzone.com is “Ask A Gay Man,” a weekly vlog from YouTube celebrity William Sledd.
CBS Daytime is bringing back its As The World Turns Boot Camp, internet-based soap opera reality show Inturn 2. Nine young hopefuls go through auditions on CBS.com from June 15 through August 14, trying out for an actual part on the show. Users will have a chance to vote online for their favorite character when the cast is narrowed down to three.
On air telecasts and live events continue to drive traffic to network websites. MTV.com Movie Awards content boosted unique visitors by 205% the day of the show and 159% the day after the show. A&E‘s 24-hour live webcast of the Criss Angel Mindfreak Cement Block event in New York’s Times Square resulted in over 115,000 visits to AETV.com, the highest trafficked day of 2007.
Chicago-based Sun-Times News Group launched Food.SunTimes.com, featuring recipes, instructional cooking videos and photos culled from the more than 90 newspapers in the group. AnswersTV will provide the video content.
The History Channel introduced an online video game from Kuma Reality Games as a companion to Dogfights, returning for a second season July 13 at 9 pm ET/PT. The game, available on History.com or kumagames.com, reflects the fights and flights detailed in each episode and is the second collaboration between the network and the gaming company.
Univision Online, Inc.‘s Univision.com has made its online video collection more accessible with the launch of its video portal (Keyword: Videos). The portal allows users to browse by genre or show, see suggested picks and automated playlists and more. Univision Online also launched a wireless video subscription service through Univision Movil, which is available on major wireless carriers, and will soon be launching a new social networking service on Univision.com.

Blip.tv closed on a second round of financing led by Ambient Sound Investments, the fund founded by the four founding engineers of Skype. Blip.tv, celebrating its second anniversary this month, provides hosting, distribution and brokers advertising for content creators with a 50/50 revenue sharing model.
Event-finding social networking site Going.com is trying out a new feature this week–users can go online and buy a drink for someone. A certificate is sent via email and can be printed up and redeemed from any of 60 participating bars in New York.
Justin.tv has launched two new lifecast shows. Hip hop radio station Wild 94.9 now has its own point-of-view webcam show, inviting singer Rhianna yesterday for its launch. San Francisco fashion producer Parris Harris also has a channel allowing users peer into the world of Bay area fashion.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
In a move reminiscent of the dust up between DirecTV and cable over exaggerated HD claims, Comcast is suing Denver-based telco Qwest over its “false, misleading, and deceptive advertising campaign.” Qwest has been running commercials and print ads claiming that 72% of internet users who participated in a “broadband challenge” blind taste test found Qwest premium to be faster or as fast as Comcast’s cable modem service. Comcast is complaining it didn’t measure its fastest tier of service.
WNBC and NBC Universal will also get their programming into New York taxis this fall, thanks to a deal with Creative Mobile Technologies. CMT’s Freedom Solution includes interactive maps, ad opportunities and the ability to process credit card purchases, revenue from which medallion owners will share in.

A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange, but all have something to do with this crazy business. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
