Cynopsis: Kids!
06.05.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 5, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The marketing machine for Disney Channel‘s original retro-surf movie Teen Beach Movie is under way. The network has signed on Honda and Best Western as sponsors of the movie, which debuts July 19 (8pm). The Walt Disney Records soundtrack is available now for preorder via iTunes, and in stores nationwide July 16. The film will be available ahead of its broadcast premiere, on June 15, for verified users of the Watch Disney Channel app and WatchDisneyChannel.com. Fans can also expect a Disney-sized tidal wave of licensed merch, including apparel, home decor, dolls, and stationery/school supplies available at Walmart, Target, Toys R Us, Kohls, Kmart, Disney Stores and other retailers. The newly launched Disney Channel Photo Finish app will offer a junior novel and e-book, themed stickers, frames and filters, and Teen Beach Movie activities and prizes will be unleashed at Radio Disney events around the country. But wait… there’s more. Seven-foot Teen Beach Movie branded beach balls will be on site at One Direction and R5 concerts, and the DVD will be available July 19 exclusively at Walmart and July 30 at retailers nationwide.

There’s a new kids and family production powerhouse on the block. Komixx Entertainment and the Gotham Group have formed KG Entertainment, based in LA. The new joint venture will develop and co-produce content focusing on multiplatform brands for kids to young adult audiences. KGE’s first project will be a live-action production based on Monster Republic, Hot House Fiction’s highly praised series of sci-fi novels, published by Random House Children’s Publishers. RHCP since 2009 has had a partnership with Komixx, Random House Children’s Screen Entertainment, a full-service screen entertainment producer and distributor focusing exclusively on RHCP-published books and characters. The Gotham Group has a client roster of 300 directors, screenwriters, authors, publishers, animation studios, illustrators, and comic book companies; it has first-look deals at Sony Pictures Animation and ABC Studios. Gotham is currently in production on an untitled adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s Switch with Jennifer Aniston, and just started production at 20th Century Fox on The Maze Runner, based on James Dashner’s novel. Past Gotham credits include The Spiderwick Chronicles (Paramount), and in television the Annie-winning and Emmy-nominated Creature Comforts America (CBS) and Elmo’s Christmas Countdown (ABC).

PROGRAMMING PICKS

School’s almost out, and it’s time to crank up the music. Grojband, the new Fremantle Kids & Family Entertainment series will debut on Cartoon Network on Monday, June 10 (5pm) promising laughs and lyrical mishaps.

Nickelodeon drew 3.6 million total viewers for the debut of animated series Sanjay and Craig on Saturday, May 24. The premiere helped drive double-digit gains with K2-11 and K6-11 and ranking as the No. 2 kids’ program on all TV for the week.

Disney Channel will be seeing double on July 19 when it previews new series Liv and Maddie right after the premiere of its new Disney Channel Original Movie, Teen Beach Movie. Starring Disney’s latest cover girl Dove Cameron in a dual role, Liv and Maddie follows the antics of 15-year-old identical twins and their tight-knit family. The preview airs at 9:45; series was created and exec-produced by John Beck and Ron Hart (both of According to Jim). Andy Fickman (The Game Plan, Race to Witch Mountain), John Peaslee (According to Jim, Dog With A Blog) and Betsy Sullenger (You Again) are also executive producers.

The Veep is in the house. In a new deal with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, NickMom has added Julia Louis-Dreyfus comedy The New Adventures of Old Christine (88 episodes) to its programming block, beginning Saturday, June 1. The series will air regularly weeknights (11p-midnight and 12am) and weekends (10p-midnight).

MORE KIDS NEWS

Animation distributor GKIDS is partnering with Cinedigm to launch a new multi-platform animation label. GKIDS will distribute the films theatrically, and Cinedigm will handle ancillary distribution under the GKIDS brand. First title of seven due from the venture is From Poppy Hill, which will be released to DVD/Blu-ray and cable VOD on Sept. 3 following the current theatrical release. The film was written and supervised by legendary studio founder and Oscar winner Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke) and directed by his son Goro Miyazaki.

CAMPAIGNS & SPONSORSHIPS

Cartoon Network is doing its part to fight childhood obesity. The network this summer kicks up its fourth annual Move It Movement Tour, a 16-market live affiliate event that targets kids 6-14. Presented in partnership with President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition and in support of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Initiative, the Cartoon campaign launches June 8 in Atlanta with a bunch of sponsors including Subway Fresh Fit for Kids, BGCA, NBA/WNBA Fit, NFL Play 60 and The PGA of America. The tour will feature activity and learning stations with local professional league partners, mascot and cheerleader appearances. A national on-air spot premiered Monday on Cartoon Network, Boomerang, CartoonNetwork.com, the partner’s websites and Cartoon Network’s Facebook page highlighting the tour; online educational materials available at MoveItMovement.com.

Family Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD are partnering with Concerned Children’s Advertisers, NBA Canada, the YMCA and print and broadcast media to promote Healthy Me Week. The initiative is dedicated to encouraging kids to get fit through physical activity and proper nutrition. The Canada-wide campaign runs June 3-8 and includes custom Disney short-form content featuring actors from Wizards of Waverly Place and Shake It Up on all three networks. In addition, Disney XD is hosting Try It shorts with stars from Kickin’ It, Lab Rats and Pair of Kings facing off in sports and agility competitions. The network will also broadcast the Canadian original short series Disney XD Drops In, which features network correspondent Coulton Conway learning new skills from the country’s top athletes including lacrosse with Garrett Billings of the Toronto Rock; archery with Team Pan American 2011 Medalist Crispin Duenas; and basketball with NBA star and Healthy Me Week ambassador Tristan Thompson of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The National Association of Broadcasters, Entertainment Industries Council Inc. and California Mental Health Services Authority are teaming to provide resources to help media and entertainment professionals create accurate portrayals of individuals living with mental health challenges. The initiative is in concert with President Barack Obama’s prioritizing mental health as a key issue of focus. The toolkit, available in English and Spanish, and additional resources including tips on interviewing people living with mental illness, story ideas and entertainment depiction suggestions are available at www.eiconline.org/teamup/.

DIGITAL UPDATE

There’s loads of kids content among “hundreds of TV shows and thousands of TV episodes” that are part of the new deal multiyear licensing deal Amazon inked yesterday with Viacom for Prime Instant Video. The terms cover programming from Nick and Nick Jr., as well as MTV and Comedy Central, plus a selection of Viacom-owned shows that will be exclusive to Prime, including Dora the Explorer, Blue’s Clues, and The Backyardigans. Select shows from Nick and Nick Jr. will also be available on Kindle FreeTime Unlimited, a service from Amazon that allows kids to access their favorite shows, movies, games, apps, and books all in one place. “Kids shows are one of the most watched TV genres on Prime Instant Video,” said Bill Carr, VP, digital video and music, for Amazon. Carr also added that Amazon plans to bring more shows from Viacom networks in the future. The Amazon Prime Instant Video library now offers more than 41,000 movies and TV episodes. The deal follows Netflix’s move in May to remove a bunch of Viacom titles, including Dora and SpongeBob SquarePants, from its streaming library, primarily because Netflix did not wish to meet Viacom’s asking price. If this trend continues, where Netflix (or Amazon) drop certain titles only for the other to pick it up, we could be looking at a SVOD market in which consumers don’t pick one or the other, but both.

REGISTER for Cynopsis Digital’s BIG Monetization Summit, an all-day extravaganza at the Time Warner Center on June 18. This event will spotlight what’s working when it comes to monetizing video content online and across an increasing number of devices. And we’re not restricting the discussion to just TV or just native web video programming; we’re going to talk about it all.

ABC Family has something funny to tell you. Actually, a few things. Today (June 5), fans can participate in live Twitter chats with featured during the East Coast broadcast of new episodes of comedies Melissa & Joey, Baby Daddy and Dancing Fools. The Twitter love is part of the network’s Comedy Wednesdays campaign Featured will be: Sterling Knight, who guests on Melissa and Joey; Matt Dallas, who guests on Baby Daddy; and Guy Torry, star of Dancing Fools.

The BBC holds back licenses of its children’s shows to Netflix in the U.K. for up to five years, forcing the streaming video service to offer more U.S. programming in Britain. That’s the word from Netflix chief Ted Sarandos in a recent interview with The Guardian. Sarandos said the BBC’s windows are much shorter outside the U.K., where the companies do business, but its homegrown business model translates to the BBC losing critical revenue. “It is a huge mistake–kids’ brands are very short-life cycles, and I’m not willing to pay anything for those things five years later,” he told The Guardian. “The best commercial decision possible is to license content while it has a shelf life.”

GAMING & APPS

The Nick App, which launched on iPad in February and lets users watch full episodes of TV shows as well as original online video content, is now also available for iPhone and iPod Touch devices. The app, which also works as a content-incubator of sorts, specifically via the network’s animated shorts competition, will be available as a video-based app on Xbox Live later this month.

Cupcake Digital this week releases the latest app in its Wow Wow Wubbzy line Wubbzy and the Princess, starring Wubzy and Daizy from the preschool TV series. Features include interactive games developed around word, number and shape recognition, and interactive painting, dancing and singing activities.

Storybook app company FarFaria is releasing its first single-story book, Beauty and the Beast, free for iPad, iPhone and iTouch.

LICENSING

MGA Entertainment is expanding its Canadian profile with more than 35 new deals with Studio Licensing for properties including Lalaloopsy, Bratz, Bratzillaz, Novi Stars and Little Tikes. Consumer products for these brands will begin rolling out in the fall.

BBC Worldwide signed a handful of master toy licensee and publishing partners for pre-school property Sarah & Duck, which launched on CBeebies in February. New partners include Posh Paws for plush toys, Penguin for publishing, and magazine publisher Immediate Media.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Production of eight episodes of new Nick Jr. U.K. dance series Kushaboom has begun in Hackney, London. Set in an enchanted dance studio, each five-minute episode will see a group of children join presenter Helena Dowling and DJ Kusha, her puppet co-presenter, for a dance class.

Summer is a great time for a road trip. That’s the thinking at CBeebies, which will be hitting the road to promote some of its biggest shows and talent. Following the success of last year’s Get Set Grow Tour, Mr. Bloom and his Veggies will headline the promotion around local U.K. events, accompanied by Rastamouse and Da Easy Crew, Rocksteady Reggae and other guests.

IN MEMORIAM

Catharine Bushnell, head of legal at brand licensing agency Ink, died Monday after a battle with cancer. During her 30-year career in licensing, Bushnell held many key posts, including EVP of the company that became Kidz Entertainment/EEMC, before taking on the role of head of Legal in 2007. “She was one of the driving forces behind the development of Kidz Ents/EEMC and its transformation into Ink and without her relentless optimism and the benefit of being able to tap into her vast industry experience, we would never have been able to grow and prosper,” said Ink CEO Morten Geschwendtner.

CYNKIDS SPOTLIGHT

Impending daddy-hood is already working its spell on Prince William. The Duke of Cambridge is encouraging kids to learn to swim in a new video campaign in conjunction with the U.K.’s Amateur Swimming Assn. that emphasizes the skill could save lives. The initiative follows an ASA report claiming more than half of kids ages 7-11 can’t swim 25 meters unaided. William, a patron of the English Schools Swimming Assn., says in the video: “Swimming is unique. It is the only sport that can save lives, which is why I’m so keen for school swimming to be accessible for all children at all primary schools.”

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Congrats to Jennifer Levine, who joins Sprout as VP, communications. Prior to joining Sprout, Levine was a VP of global communications for the publishing business within Disney Consumer Products.

Paws, Inc., licensor of Garfield and the Garfield characters, appoints Debi Rosenfeld as executive sales director. Rosenfeld has a long history in the licensing business, notably as VP, licensing & merchandising, at Saban Entertainment where she created the licensing department with the launch of the Power Rangers.

Carl England is joining Platinum Films as managing director. England, who most recently was head of international licensing at toy company Jakks Pacific, will lead the international licensing and merchandising roll-out of Platinum’s franchise Matt Hatter Chronicles, and will grow other existing brands on Platinum’s intellectual property portfolio.
