Microsoft‘s ad division is aiming to understand whether online ads encourage consumers to tune into TV via an expanded research partnership with Nielsen. Dubbed the Television Online Effect program, the goal of the joint project is to learn how consumer behavior across TV and the Web influences consumer engagement with the marketing message. The research begins in August and Nielsen will rely on data from its TV/Internet Fusion panel paired with customized research Microsoft will develop from ad campaigns running on Microsoft properties. “If advertisers are looking to capture food enthusiasts for the launch of a new cooking show or networks are looking to drive Moms to primetime programing, they can leverage our exciting new service,” Microsoft’s Joslyn Moore, General Manager Scale Media, said in a blog post.The pilot will launch with entertainment advertisers but is likely to expand.
Boosted by strong television ratings, Bravo‘s digital division also pulled in robust numbers for the second quarter, logging 8% growth to now reach more than 3.8 million unique visitors online. Mobile fared well too: Bravo said its mobile content registered a 7% uptick in page views and more than 6 times increase in video streams compared to the same quarter a year ago.

Location-based marketing will account for nearly 35% of total mobile ad revenue in four years, according to the latest research from Pyramid Research, a division of Light Reading Communications Network. The firm pegged the total location-based ad market at $6.2 billion by 2015, up from a mere $86 million back in 2008. Local search will be the largest driver of the mobile ad market, Pyramid said.
The latest twice-yearly study from Advertiser Perceptions says marketing executives at consumer brands are “more optimistic” about upping their ad spend this year than they’ve been for the last four years. That positive sentiment applies to print, digital TV and mobile, with brands planning to boost their spends in cable and broadcast TV, in particular Ad Age reported.
Now that Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has joined the board of social network giant Facebook, the two companies could integrate their services in cool new ways, suggested the TV strategy research firm FutureScape. The firm predicts social sharing and recommendations of TV content via connected TVs could rise as a result of the closer ties between the two players, perhaps turning into a viable alternative to VOD libraries on TV, FutureScape said in a research note. But there’s a big caveat a board seat does not guarantee service integrations, so these possible maneuverings are speculative at this point.
Casual games publisher eGames acquired social gaming company Heyday Games, in a transaction that bring Heyday’s former CEO Gene Mauro on board at eGames as President and Chief Operating Officer, where he’ll oversee development and production of future games, with his team coming aboard too. Jerry Klein stays on as eGames CEO. The combined company will continue to focus on Facebook games, as well as games to be played across the Web and mobile devices.
Under an agreement Hearst struck earlier this year with Apple, iTunes has now begun selling the July issue of O Magazine in the iTunes app store at $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year. The issue includes the media icon’s 6th annual summer reading list with book recommendations, including those books that are better reads for eReader and those that are better for ink and paper.

Sister networks Food Network and DIY are partnering to uncover kitchens that need redos, and entrants can upload an image or video to DIYNetwork.com. If you’ve got the “worst kitchen in American,” then DIY and Food Network Magazine may give it a facelift and feature it on an one-hour TV special premiering in January on DIY.
Personal finance news source Kiplinger jumped on the mobile train with the introduction of a free mobile Web site that includes a more interactive version of its traditional Web-based newsletter content. Kiplinger will introduce even more interactivity in additional iPhone, iPad and Android mobile apps that should include faster speed, better search and interactive quizzes and slide shows, among other features.
Oxygen Media promoted Jennifer Kavanagh to Senior VP Digital, where she’ll lead all of the network’s digital and social efforts, including those spanning mobile, apps, interactive TV, gaming and content distribution. She most recently served as VP digital.
Media agency WPP‘s video division Kantar Video appointed Andrew Chang as Chief of Staff and Brian Schorr as Director of Finance. Their tasks will be to oversee daily operations, resource allocation and long-term strategy. Chang joins from digital agency 360i, while Schorr shifts internally having most recently worked as finance director at WPP’s CommonHealth.
The mommy blogging world continues to attract new investment and development. A&E Networks has relaunched and redesigned Lifetimemoms to include new mom experts and additional videos. The new material expands on the existing blog network that launched two years ago and has more than doubled in size since then, A&E said, reaching more than one million moms per month. Lifetime is also adding new channels catering to multicultural moms.
