Cynopsis

6/27/07

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, June 27, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

In the cable upfront business, deals are being signed.  Lifetime Television has completed approx half of its upfront business, including a major deal with GroupM.  The network has converted to using average commercial ratings for its upfront deal-making, known simply now as C3 (average commercial ratings for live viewing plus three days of digital video recorder playback). Lifetime has also reported getting price increases in the high-single-digit range on a CPM basis.

ABC Family is The Destination for Millennials

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

WWE‘s Monday Night Raw on USA Network used its three hours to pay tribute to wrestler Chris Benoit who was found dead in his Atlanta home along with his wife and son.  Since then evidence at the Benoit Atlanta home points to a double homicide/suicide, allegedly at the hands of Chris Benoit.  As a result, all WWE tributes to Benoit on air and online at WWE.com have been removed. Additionally, Vince McMahon opened last night’s ECW: Extreme Champion Wrestling show on Sci Fi Channel with this statement: “Last night … the WWE presented a special tribute show, recognizing the career of Chris Benoit.  However, now some 26 hours later, the facts of this horrific tragedy are now apparent.  Therefore, other than my comments, there will be no mention of Mr. Benoit tonight.  On the contrary, tonight’s show will be dedicated to everyone who has been affected by this terrible incident.  This evening marks the first step of the healing process.  Tonight, the WWE performers will do what they do better than anyone else in the world–entertain you.”

Get out your erasers for a schedule change: TNT has moved the premiere date for Saving Grace starring Holly Hunter to July 23 at 10p followed by The Closer. For the next three weeks, the new drama Heartland will stay on Mondays at 10p then move to Mondays at 8p starting July 23.

Network Evening News Update: ABC’s World News with Charles Gibson has been in the #1 position for nine straight weeks among total viewers and A25-54. Here are the results for the week of June 18, 2007:
ABC: 7.70 million total viewers and 2.0/9 A25-54
NBC: 7.25 million total viewers and 1.8/8 A25-54
CBS: 5.92 million total viewers and 1.5/6 A25-54

This summer Hallmark Channel will populate its schedule with movies of different genres. In July the network will have several westerns on the line-up including its newest original movie Avenging Angel on July 7, as well as an all-day marathon of its Love series of movies. Then in August, Hallmark Channel will program a series of mystery movies including the new original movie Claire debuting August 11. On sister network Hallmark Movie Channel, classic Disney movies will be offered throughout July as well as Disney Deja Vu double features on Saturday nights that program the original and remake versions, such as Freaky Friday and The Love Bug. Additionally, Hallmark Movie Channel will program the miniseries Dinotopia from August 3-5.

Dow Jones & Co‘s board of directors and News Corp. have reached an agreement “in principle” on the establishment of an editorial board that would oversee a News Corp.–owned Wall Street Journal. Expect protracted haggling over price, but this should pave the way for a deal.

Turner’s Adult Swim takes another lap, as the late-night programming block, which runs on Cartoon Network overnight, expands to seven nights a week with the addition of Fridays.  The Adult Swim weekly schedule will now go like this: Monday-Saturday, 11p-6a and Sundays 10p-6a.  Launched in September 2001 with three hours of programming two nights a week, by January 2003 Adult Swim had stretched to five nights a week (Sunday-Thursday) and two years later in March 2005 moved to an overnight scheduled 11p-6a.

Spike TV’s The Ultimate Fighter finale punched hard last Saturday (9p-midnight) and overall delivered 834,000 M18-34 viewers at a 3.0 rating and 1.4 million M18-49 viewers at a 2.6 rating.

SCI FI Channel reached to the stars this past Friday night as the series finale of Stargate SG-1 (8p) had 1.2 million A25-54 viewers, 1.1 million A18-49 viewers and 2.2 million total viewers. Viewers, for the most part, stay tuned for the third season finale of Stargate Atlantis (9p) as the episode reached 1.1 million A25-54 viewers, 986,000 A18-49 viewers and almost 2 million total viewers.

TBS steps into the high-definition arena starting September 1 as the network launches TBS in HD. The HDTV simulcast of TBS’ East coast feed will include its original comedies My Boys and The Bill Engvall Show as well as House of Payne and tried-and-true sitcoms Seinfeld, Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond and Sex and the City. The HD product will also include the network’s exclusive coverage of Major League Baseball’s Division Series Playoffs and the National League Championship Series.

Leslie Nielsen, who usually lends his comedic talents to off-beat movies, will host the new series DOCTOR*OLOGY on Discovery Health premiering July 14 at 8p. The series combines comedy with informative medical information as Nielsen leads a tour through the various medical specialties such as gastroenterology to dermatology. The series is produced by GalaFilm Productions.

At yesterday’s Advertising and Media Outlook Update hosted by Universal McCann, the information presented took a hard look at emerging media and the trends of media usage. Traditional media such as TV and radio still dominate an average person’s time: 466.5 hours per year on average spent watching TV and 292.5 hours per year on average spent listening to radio, compared to 57 hours annually spent using consumer internet. The youngest demos are spending most of their time with TV: in 2006-2007 A18-34 spent 27+ hours per week; K2-5 spent 25+ hours per week; and K6-11 and P12-17 spent around 22 hour per week.
