Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, June 27, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

AT&T and Apple unveiled pricing plans for the iPhone. Individual plans start at $59.99 for 450 rollover minutes, 200 text messages and 5,000 nights and weekend minutes. Family plans start at $109.99 for two phones, with 700 minutes to share. The best part of the deal is that all plans include unlimited email and web surfing, encouraging users to fully take advantage of the first phone to deliver the “real” internet. Current AT&T/Cingular customers can even add iPhone’s all-you-can eat data plan for an extra $20/month after they pay a $36 one time activation fee. An AT&T representative claims existing numbers can ported over from rival services, although there may be a delay in processing.
 
The anticipation for the iPhone’s release at 6 pm local time on Friday has reached fever pitch. Searches for “iphone” have increased 583% during the past 4 weeks, according to Hitwise.  Members of the Apple cult are already lining up at their local Apple stores. Apple fixed it so you can activate the iPhone by simply synching it with a Mac or PC running iTunes, so purchasers won’t have to clog up stores waiting to get hooked up.
 
Despite the hype, however, analysts warn not to expect millions of sales overnight. Many will show up to kick the tires, only to decide to wait for the kinks to be worked out, for the price to drop or until their current contract expires. The fact that the iPhone does not run on AT&T’s faster 3G network may keep the more technically savvy away.

Dow Jones & Co‘s board of directors and News Corp. have reached an agreement “in principle” on the establishment of an editorial board that would oversee a News Corp.–owned Wall Street Journal. Expect protracted haggling over price, but this should pave the way for a deal. 
 
AOL saw lightning strike when it converted TMZ.com to a blog format and has decided to do the same with its AOL News portal. The site now sports a cleaner look with the main stories featured in a center strip on the home page. AOL also now offer readers the opportunity to comment, tag and rate stories. This tour page gives a better idea of what it will look like when the relaunch is complete. AOL News has been losing visitors as of late, according to comScore, with traffic falling 12% in May to 19.1 million unique visitors.
 
TBS will launch a simulcast of its East Coast feed in HD beginning in September, broadcasting in 1080i and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.
 
Oxygen‘s SheDidWhat.tv launched its first online talent competition seeking the best idea for a comedy targeting women aged 18-39. Comedian Molly Shannon will judge the best 3-5 minute video and two-page treatment submitted through August 31.
 
NBC aired a special promo featuring Second Life resident Tuna Oddfellow during the broadcast of America’s Got Talent last night. The magician won a contest sponsored by NBC on June 14 by performing virtual tricks in NBC 3, one of NBC’s 10 SL locations.
 
IFC’s original web series Getting Away With Murder is now being featured on video sharing site broadcaster.com.
 
Travel Channel will debut new episodes of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations on VOD July 13, two weeks before season three premiers on air July 30 at 10 pm ET/PT. Anthony is going to New York, Brazil, French Polynesia, Cleveland, Hong Kong, Argentina, Charleston and Tuscany this season.
 
G4‘s animated Code Monkeys show will premiere on male-oriented video sharing site Break.com on June 27, two weeks prior to its on air debut July 11 at 9 pm ET.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

Video player start-up Slapvid launched a beta player that accomplishes peer-to-peer video streaming (a la Joost, Veoh, Babelgum) through a web browser instead of a desktop player that must be downloaded. Slapvid runs as a Java applet in conjunction with a Flash video player, connecting with multiple peers watching the same video and managing the video bits as they stream to the application. The site is currently running a demo of YouTube videos to preview the player, but the P2P functionality is only running as a closed beta test for now.
 
Video site Revision 3 raised $8 million in second round financing. The startup, from Digg co-founders Kevin Rose and Jay Adelson, own the exclusive rights to broadcast ten web-only shows including the run-away hit tech/web culture podcast Diggnation , which recently celebrated its 100th episode.
 
The sharks are already circling the smaller Facebook app creators. Slideshow enabler Slide acquired Favorite Peeps for a reported $60,000, the widget that allows users to give their favorite friends a nickname. The application currently has about 1.3 million users, ranked the #14 most popular Facebook widget.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
 

The new RealNetworks video player launched in beta format for the PC yesterday, allowing users the option to download, save, burn and send any online video delivered to the player. The basic player, which downloads to a CD, is free; the DVD-save option is only available using the $29.99 RealPlayer plus. The company claims the player automatically recognizes DRM-protected content and will not download it.
 
Intel
signed a licensing agreement with Cable Labs to support OCAP, the OpenCable Application Platform initiative that aims to develop a standard for devices to work on the cable platform. Intel had been one of the key holdouts for the OCAP, objecting to having to foot the bill to adapt its chips. The deal should help spur the development of Intel-based set top boxes and PCs that integrate with two-way cable services.
 
Texas Instruments is working on a 3G processor that will serve as an HD video platform for mobile phones. OMAP 3 phones, expected to hit the market in 2008, will feature 720×1368 resolution and cameras capable of shooting 12 megapixels of photos per second. TI is even experimenting with a projector that can be used to display HD video from your phone.
 
A federal judge threw Vonage a lifeline in its lawsuit with Verizon. The judge suggested a compromise that would allow the VOIP service provider to continue to sign new customers while it develops the technology that would allow it to operate without infringing on Verizon’s patents.

Online ad spending will continue to grow at rates of roughly 30% through 2008, according to new research from Magna Global presented yesterday by Interpublic Group sibling Universal McCann. (The numbers should help ease the pain of revised estimates of only 3.1% growth in overall U.S. advertising.) Emerging Media (including paid search, digital billboards, social networking, VOD/advanced TV, mobile marketing and gaming) is expected to reach $11.5 billion this year and $14.7 billion in 2008. Paid search continues to dominate, but rapid growth in social network marketing also stands out.

John MacDonald has been hired by MTV to the newly created position of SVP/Content Programming and Strategy, reporting to Tony DiSanto, EVP/Series Development in the Santa Monica office. He will supervise the linear MTV schedule as well as content distribution across all platforms. The hire is part of a recent reorganization dividing programming into three divisions – Series Development, Content Programming and Strategy and Series Production, designed to streamline development across multiple platforms.
 
Tribune Broadcasting named Rick Felty to the newly created post of VP/Digital Media. He will direct central operations for the station group’s 27 websites, reporting to John Reardon, President of Tribune Broadcasting. Rick previously served as VP/Creative Services for Tribune.
 
Jay Frank joined CMT as SVP/Music Strategy. He will oversee the network’s Music and Talent division as well as on air and digital music initiatives across multiple platforms. Jay was VP/Music Programming and Label Relations at Yahoo! Music prior to joining CMT.

Washington Post Interactive’s Slate relaunched a new video-centric online magazine Slate V. The site features video stories on politics, art, science, business and culture updated every weekday, much of it produced in house. Andy Bowers, former NPR columnist and creator of Slate’s podcast, has been hired to edit the site. It even features a section called Did You See This?, an editor’s choice of the best videos from around the web.
