Not content to let Amazon and iTunes rule the music roost, Facebook is reportedly working on adding a music component. Via partnerships with several online music services like Pandora and Spotify, the company is likely aiming to add a tab to profile pages showing songs that other users are rocking out to on music sites online. In addition, Facebook will feature song recommendations from friends, said a GigaOm story that suggested the music service could be a major focus at the company’s upcoming annual developers conference. If so, Facebook could open itself to another barrage of privacy issues for itself and for its 600 million users. While the potential of a music service isn’t likely to knock iTunes from its perch atop the music-buying world, music can bolster time spent on the site, which in turn boosts ad spending. Facebook has a strong base in music; 44 of its top 100 most popular pages are music-related, said AppData. Ad spending on Facebook will reach $4.05 billion worldwide this year, more than double last year, eMarketer said.
Hulu may put itself up for sale since it’s been approached with a buyout offer, according to late-breaking Wall Street Journal and CNBC reports. The video site is considering the offer, the news outlets said.
Viewership for Oxygen’s Glee Project rose by double digits in its second week, an increase the network said was buoyed by sampling of the show in its first week across digital platforms such as VOD, mobile, Oxygen.com and Hulu. Ratings for the 18 to 49 demographic rose by 46% in the second week.

Social marketing platform provider Roost rolled out a free tool for small businesses to track how they’re faring locally with their Facebook marketing efforts. The new service offers reports on how effectively, or not, small businesses are reaching their local customers with social media.
AOL Advertising.com’s Pictela platform paired up with heavy hitter web publishers in FoxNews.com, Meredith Corporation, Variety, The Wall Street Journal Digital Network and Weather.com to use the “IAB Portrait” interactive ad unit, suggesting that the recently launched ad format is gaining more traction for branding messages. In related news, AOL said the IAB Portrait unit attracts attention 35 percent faster than competing units and garners 81 percent more attention, according to a just-completed study conducted by AOL and Interpublic Group’s IPG Media Lab. Also, a related study found that larger online ad units resonate more with consumers than typical display ads, according to research conducted by Yahoo and Innerscope Research.
Brands should aim for a mix of paid and earned media, as well as brand advertising to boost brand awareness, a new study from Synaptic Digital and WPP’s Kantar Video reported. The study, using data from an unnamed American automaker, showed that brand awareness clocked in at 61% with that combo, compared to a benchmark rate of 16%. Interestingly, the study also found that women were more receptive to the media mixture, while men were mostly likely to be influenced by earned PR.
Mobile network optimization firm Bytemobile found that mobile TV and video account for 40% to 60% of mobile data traffic on wireless networks. The report also found that mobile users request high-resolution videos 29% of the time.
The tablet market is on track to surpass the e-reader market by year-end, said research firm In-Stat. That’s why In-Stat expects Amazon and Barnes and Noble to add more tablet-like functionality to their readers. For now, the firm said 38% of study respondents owned a tablet and 26% an e-reader. Global e-reader shipments will reach 40 million by 2015, In-Stat said.

Yahoo is showing its support for film via a deal to become the official sponsor of the short film program at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, a post that calls for the search giant to premiere a number of shorts from the festival on Yahoo! Movies, which reaches more than 27 million uniques per month.
Via an expanded partnership, Experian and Adobe will provide clients of both companies with more detailed comparison views of Web sites and visitor metrics.
Starz is launching an interactive app for its upcoming series Torchwood: Miracle Day that premieres July 8th. The app will include ten short motion comic narratives that offer clues to the show’s storyline.
After a recent Web site revamp, Better Homes and Gardens has seen page views per visitor rise 30% compared to the weeks before the overhaul. The redesign brings better navigation and personalization features to the site, the company said, and follows a larger digital facelift this spring that included the launch of a tablet edition of the magazine.
Social marketing platform Vitrue has landed Catherine Chandler as Chief Financial Officer. She reports to Vitrue CEO and Founder Reggie Bradford and served most recently at Liaison Technologies, with stints at Georgia-Pacific Corporation and Savannah Foods & Industries as well.
Social networking service Meebo upped several executives, promoting Martin Green to President, and expanding the roles of Co-Founders Sandy Jen and Elaine Wherry into Chief Technology Officer and Chief Experience Officer respectively. Green most recently served as Chief Operating Officer.
Internet TV network Revision3 snagged TV veteran and digital media expert Anthony Soohoo for its board of directors. Soohoo most recently served as Senior VP and General Manager of Entertainment at CBS Interactive.
MSNBC-owned local news service EveryBlock hired Brian Addison as President, a newly created post. He’ll lead the company’s operations and strategy as it focuses on neighborhood news. He joins from digital ad firm Band Digital.
