A major patent dispute between Apple and Nokia was settled on Tuesday, awarding the Finnish handset maker with a lump sum payment and a percentage of royalties from sales of the iPhone. Nokia’s claims involved technology for wireless data, speech coding, security, encryption, fingertip sliding and the setting up of an app store. The amount of the payments was not disclosed, but they are expected to be in the hundreds of millions of euros. Nokia, which noted the award would have a “positive financial impact” for Q2, is looking to utilize some of the disputed technology in the phones it is designing to run on the Windows Phone 7 platform.
WEtv.com has launched a live, interactive, dual-screen viewing experience giving viewers the opportunity to interact with each other around the show they are watching in real time. The “WE tv Sync,” application aggregates posts from Facebook, Twitter and WEtv.com while a second live stream provides fun facts, polls, exclusive photos and videos from the show. The platform currently features a conversation around the eighth season of WE tv’s Bridezillas.
PBS is celebrating the return of History Detectives with a newly redesigned website that features integrations with Facebook, Gowalla and GetGlue, including check-ins, sticker incentives and a specially designed interactive “trip” to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Users will also be able to view sneak peaks of each episode on PBS iOS mobile apps or on the PBS Facebook page; one full-length story from every episode will be available for streaming five days before each broadcast.
Hulu will debut three new acquired series from the U.K. this summer on both Hulu.com and subscription service Hulu Plus, according to an Ad Age report. The shows are Channel 4 and BBC Worldwide’s “Misfits,” premiering June 20; Vuguru’s “A Booth at the End,” launching July 11; and BBC and Content Media Corp.’s “Whites,” premiering July 20.
NBA.com delivered 141 million video streams during the finals this year, an increase of 89% vs. last year. NBA Mobile downloads for the NBA GameTime app were also up 37% compared to last year, according to NBA Digital.
Facebook plans to file for its IPO as early as this fall in a stock issue that could value the company north of $100 billion, according to a CNBC report. (The social networking giant is expected to generate some $4 bn in ad revenue in 2011, according to eMarketer estimates – that puts the price at a hefty 25 times earnings multiple.) Goldman Sachs and others are vying to manage the offering, which should hit the market sometime during Q1 2012.
Revision3 has signed another YouTube star to it ranks - tech expert Jon Rettinger, aka Jon4Lakers. His TechnoBuffalo show, which airs M/W/F and features a Q&A session with viewers, counts nearly 200,000 YouTube subscribers.
Cablevision announced the successful launch of its Optimum Select RFI program with email fulfillment, enabling consumers to request more info from local, regional and national brands via email from a 30-second spot. ICE Enterprise has already utilized the program to launch the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line promotion, which ran for two weeks across Cablevision’s New York metro service area. Lincoln, Benjamin Moore and Adirondack Regional Tourism have also signed on to begin offering RFI options in the coming weeks.
Cherry Hill, N.J.-based icueTV staged a demonstration with daily deals provider Groupon at the Cable Show yesterday showing off a new “click to text” feature that allows viewers to use their remote to sign up for the coupon site. Users were instructed to input their mobile number using the remote control’s keypad, where they will receive a text message with a link to enter an e-mail address to sign up for Groupon.

Google announced a number of additional features to its Display Ad Network first introduced a year ago, designed to boost effectiveness, accountability and transparency of display campaigns for its advertisers. Relative CTR, impression share, a Content Ads diagnostic tool and the Unseen Impressions filter are the first in a series the company plans to roll out, according to MediaPost.
How many people out there are really satisfied with the interface of their cable service? Top U.S. MSO Comcast seems to be aware of its shortcomings, as CEO Brian Roberts plans to take the stage at the Cable Show on Thursday to demonstrate what the company is calling a “next generation TV experience,” currently being trialed in the town of August, GA. According to a Tuesday release, the Xfinity TV UI will include:
- fast, integrated search that spans linear TV, VOD and DVR recordings
- Interactive apps such as traffic and weather, and Facebook that lets users share and discover what to watch with their friends and “like” programs
- A centralizing personalized MyTV compendium where users can see and access all of their recordings, favorites and recommendations
Comcast’s online video publishing firm thePlatform confirmed that its cloud-based video publishing system, mpx, will serve as the central management hub for Comcast‘s next-generation Xfinity TV service. The company was also selected to manage the backend for Australian pay-TV operator Telstra’s BigPond TV this past Feb.
Rovi introduced an advanced interactive program guide app that works alongside its i-Guide IPG, offering features such as advanced search, recommendations and rich metadata indexing. (Oregon’s BendBroadband and Pennsylvania-based MSO Armstrong have signed on to launch the updated versions of TotalGuide.) The company is also introducing a multi-device over-the-top VOD platform aimed at non-TV devices for cable operators. The solution includes content preparation, cloud hosting, multi-format IP delivery and support for subscriber authentication.
Cablevision, the first MSO to offer complementary Wi-Fi service to its cable modem customers, is increasing the speed of that network exponentially, delivering up to 15 Mbps downstream and up to 4 Mbps upstream - matching the downloads speeds of its wired high-speed internet service.
Chumby Industries, which has transitioned from a device maker to an open platform for third-party apps, is now headed into the connected TV market in a tie-up with Pace set-top boxes. The integration will offer cable subscribers access to more than 1,500 applications, ranging from music and social networking sites to news and entertainment gossip, photo viewing, video clips and sports scores.
Movies remain the most popular content format for 3DTV users and viewing them tends to be a social event, with 93% of set owners reporting they had watched 3D movies and 64% saying they watched them with others, according to an updated CTAM study conducted by NPD. Viewers also appear to be getting more tolerant of having to wear the glasses, with 47% claiming they’re “satisfied” with having to wear them and 55% saying they’re O.K. with how they fit. Content continued to be the main sticking point with the technology, with only 40% of 3DTV owners claiming they are satisfied with the amount of 3D programming available.
Free video curation tablet app Squrl, which enables consumers to “squirrel” away their favorite videos to view later on their iPad, has introduced a bunch of new features and added support of Android devices including the Motorola Xoom or Galaxy Tab. Users will now have the ability to build playlists, see what other video curators are watching and liking and notifying the squrl community of what you’re watching through Facebook, Twitter or email.
Music Choice and Verizon are teaming up to launch a new music-video app for Verizon FiOS customers, offering instant access to a variety of major label music videos through the click of the remote. Verizon is the first pay TV provider to offer the app.
Giving us an idea of just how steep those carrier subsidies are, Apple started selling unlocked versions of the iPhone 4 without contracts attached to be used on the “supported GSM cellular network of your choice.” The 16 GB version of the iPhone 4 runs $649, while the 32 GB model costs $749. The idea is to give frequent international travelers the option of bypassing expensive roaming charges.
iTV technology company Ensequence has named Paul Jelinek as SVP/Global Business Operations. Paul will oversee business development, strategic planning, international business activities and general business operations. He will be based in New York and report to Ensequence CEO and President Peter Low.
Analytics company MarketShare has hired former CEO of GroupM Business Science, Steve Simpson, to serve as EVP/Global Accounts and Strategic Growth. He will be based in the company’s London office.
Mobile advertising company Mobile Posse has tapped Greg Wester as EVP/Ad Sales. He will be based in the company’s new New York City office.
Food Network UK named Kate Bradshaw, who most recently served as Deputy MD and Head of Online Commissioning for ITV.com, as Consultant Head of Digital.

Mobile search today is growing at a comparable pace to Google’s desktop search in the early years according to the search giant. The platform’s success has encouraged Google to introduce desktop versions of some popular applications it first developed for mobile. Voice Search for Google’s Chrome web browser enables you to speak what you’re looking for into your laptop or desktop’s mike. A new Search by Image feature, pioneered as part of the Google Goggles mobile toolkit, enables you to drag-and-drop, upload or copy and paste images from URLs to help identify where in the world a landmark is. The company also unveiled a new feature called Instant Pages, where the top search results are readied in the background while you’re choosing which link to click on. After entering a search query, users will be able to open results almost instantly. Previously, page loads from Google Search would take 3-5 seconds to complete.
