There’s no such thing as a free lunch. As it aims to compete in a TV Everywhere world, Fox is pulling back on quick access to free online TV fare. The network will now offer an exclusive 8-day viewing window to video distributors for its new “online authentication service,” with satellite provider DISH Network as the first on board. Viewers who want to see new Fox shows the day after they air on TV can check them out at Fox.com, Hulu.com, Dishonline or the Web sites of other participating service providers. Viewers will need to log in and those who don’t subscribe to a participating partner will have to wait eight days to see the Fox shows online. The service begins August 15. The deal is sure to tick off some consumers who want to watch immediately, but it also may help to better preserve the network’s relationship with multichannel partners.
Underscoring the key role that video-on-demand still plays for cablers, Comcast paired up with NBC Universal to dynamically insert ads into NBC shows on-demand across several Comcast markets, with more markets slated for the coming year. Launch advertisers include Chrysler and Kraft, and their spots will run on VOD content from USA, E!, Syfy, Bravo Media and Oxygen Media. Dynamic ad insertion has long been regarded as a vital element in growing ad dollars in the VOD medium. Comcast said it’s averaging 350 million views per month for its VOD programming.
Netflix‘s recent pricing change may lead to churn of about 6.5 million U.S. subscribers this quarter, said industry analyst Will Richmond in a post digging into Netflix’s earnings from earlier this week. That level of churn would erase nearly all the gross subscriber additions the company has made in the US for the quarter, he said.
Reading isn’t dead. It’s just changing form. Ask Amazon, which reported sales for the second quarter rose 51% to $9.91 billion, up from $6.57 billion a year ago, buoyed in part by the strength of Kindle sales. Though it didn’t break out Kindle numbers, Amazon said Kindle sales rose in the second quarter compared to the first, and the new Kindle 3G with Special Offers is now the most popular Kindle it sells. However, net income dropped 8% to $191 million in the quarter, but the numbers still exceeded Wall Street expectations and the company’s stock jumped after the earnings report.
Having fun on Google +? Watch out because the new social networking service is ripe for phishing attacks and email scams, predicted antivirus company Kaspersky Lab. Its new study cited an increase in phishing attacks on Facebook in June, with Google + a likely next target, especially in the form of email spam.
Jumio, a tech firm backed by Facebook Co-Founder Eduardo Saverin, came out of stealth mode this week with its service. Called Netswipe, the technology enables Web cams to swipe credit cards and could boost the number of merchants offering online commerce, Jumio said.

As brands increasingly turn to their consumers for involvement in the creation of new ideas and products, an eMarketer report has found that crowdsourcing is most common at the stage of idea generation, while co-creation of a product can help a company at later stage of a product’s life cycle. “Companies tend to take an inside-out approach to co-creation, but those that take an outside-in approach, by listening to and observing customers, are in a position to discover ways to create mutual value,” eMarketer said. Not surprisingly, Facebook and Twitter are the most common means to engage consumers and users.
To compete against Apple’s iPad, Android manufacturers are going to need to drop their prices a lot. About 79% of consumers would buy an Android tablet with similar features to a $499 iPad if the Android device cost less than $250, according to a new study from Retrevo . About half of consumers would buy one if it costs less than $300. Of the people planning to buy a tablet this year, half have their sights set on an iPad, and 21% on an Android.
Nielsen paired up with media agency WPP’s information and insight group Kantar Media in a multi-year deal that calls for Kantar to provide local TV audience measurement data from the DIRECTView set-top box service to Nielsen. The measurement company will then combine that info with its people meter data as a potential means to move away from diary measurement in local markets.
Social marketing services Vitrue partnered with commerce platform company Milyonis. The deal gives brands using Vitrue more commerce opportunities across Facebook.
MTV Networks is working with the Mass Relevance platform to analyze, filter and curate real-time social conversations for a range of MTV programming, such as the 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards and VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live, the two companies said.
Estee Lauder’s cosmetics brand Smashbox Cosmetics has implemented a social shopping functionality on Smashbox.com via a partnership with social media tools company Social Amp. The partnership enables “Facebook-like social interaction” on the SmashBox site, giving visitors a custom shopping experience that shows products that are popular within a user’s social circle.
Online sharing marketplace ShareThis appointed Kurt Abrahamson as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. He most recently served as CEO of online display ad company SocialMedia .com , and previously worked as a director at Google where he helped launch Google AdSense.
