Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, July 25, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.

As expected, Paula Zahn is leaving CNN at the end of her current contract which expires on August 2. The final episode of Paula Zahn Now will air on Thursday, August 2, and thereafter the time period will be hosted by a variety of news anchor fill-ins until Campbell Brown’s show launches in November.  Brown then takes a maternity leave starting in December, but expects to be back on the job in early February.   This year, Paula Zahn Now has averaged 558,000 viewers, less than 25% of the viewership of The O’Reilly Factor on Fox News, and approx 100,000 viewers less than MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann.

Viewer Round-Up: The following are viewer results for premieres, finales and other most-watched shows from recent days:

  • TNT‘s premiere episode of Saving Grace drew in 6.4 million viewers, making it the #1 ad supported cable network premiere so far this year.  Among A18-49, 1.94 million viewers tuned in.
  • AMC’s new drama depicting the New York advertising world, Mad Men, delivered a 1.4 HH rating and more than 1.2 million homes for its last Thursday (10p) premiere.
  • ESPN’s coverage of David Beckham’s first game with the LA Galaxy became the most-viewed Major League Soccer telecast in the history of ESPN or ESPN2. The July 21 game (9p) against Chelsea FC, where Beckham played just 16 minutes while nursing an ankle injury, averaged nearly 1.5 million total viewers or 947,000 television homes based on a 1.0 rating. The next primetime MLS match on ESPN2 HD with the LA Galaxy (and David Beckham) is August 9 at 7p against D.C. United.
  • Food Network’s The Next Food Network Star season finale episode on Sunday (9p) delivered 3.4 million total viewers and a 1.7 A25-54 rating. This final episode is the highest-rated and most-watch telecast in Food Network’s history.
  • HGTV’s Casting Special for the second season of HGTV Design Star on Sunday (10p) drew in a 0.7 A25-54 rating and 1.5 million A18+ impressions and 1.2 million W18+ impressions.
  • Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, one of the five original animated series that launched Adult Swim in September 2001 aired its last episode on Sunday (1145p). The series finale delivered 659,000 A18-34 viewers and 465,000 M18-34 viewers.
  • VH1 scored with the fourth season opener of its celebrity reality series Hogan Knows Best on Sunday (10p) with an average of 1.6 million total viewers. This series airs between two new freshman celebrity reality series: Rock of Love with Bret Michaels at 9p that delivered 1.1 million A18-49 viewers this past Sunday, and Scott Baio is 45 … And Single at 1030p which had 1.2 million A18-49 viewers.

From the land of koalas and kangaroos, MTV will debut The Real World: Sydney on August 8 at 10p. A sneak preview of the first episode will happen beginning July 31 for Comcast subscribers with On Demand. An additional preview will air August 1 at www.RealWorld.MTV.com, where fans can also find cast blogs, cast and house photos and 2-minute peaks of upcoming episodes. Exclusive content will also be available via MTV.com, and starting August 8 through Virtual Real World at www.vmtv.com. Episodes can be downloaded the day after airing on MTV through a variety of services: iTunes Store, Amazon Unbox, AOL Video and Walmart Video Downloads, plus the preview episode can be downloaded for free starting August 2. The network has ordered 24 episodes of The Real World: Sydney from Bunim Murray Productions.
 
Current TV picked up the popular web series Hometown Baghdad, planning to air the series in five 3-7 minute pods cut exclusively for Current viewers. The news show is shot by an all-Iraqi crew and tells the story of three young survivors of the ongoing Iraqi war. The shorts will begin airing on Thursday, July 26, with new pods running once a week through August 23.
 
Anime Network has added three new markets to boost its linear distribution as the network will be seen later this summer in the Kansas towns of Lawrence, Hays and Minneapolis through new deals with Sunflower Broadband and Eagle Communications.

Saffron Burrows joins the cast of ABC‘s Boston Legal in the role of Lorraine Walker, a lawyer who has a romantic past with James Spader’s character.   Also joining the cast later on in the season will be Taraji P. Henson.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

John Eck has been upgraded to President of NBC TV Network and Media Works, reporting to Jeff Zucker, President/CEO, NBC Universal. John will retain all his current duties and will add executive management of NBC Affiliate Relations and NBC Network Operations to his roster.
 
ACME Communications, Inc. has made Mitch English the Manager/Product Integration for The Daily Buzz, the nationally syndicated morning news program. Mitch, who will continue as co-host of the show, will take on the new responsibility of product integration for the show, in addition to his other weather reporting for live national and local segments.
 
mtvU has upped Ross Martin from Head/Programming to SVP and Chris McCarthy from Head/Marketing to VP, and has recruited Andrew Federici for the new position as VP/Online Properties. All three will be based in New York and will report directly to Stephen Friedman, GM/EVP, mtvU.
 
Under the Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. property umbrella that comprises the Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media group, James Anderson has been advanced to SVP/Public Relations. James will oversee public relations and publicity initiatives on behalf of Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Adult Swim, the digital businesses Cartoonnetwork.com, AdultSwim.com, Toonami Jetstream, Cartoon Network Video, GameTap and Super Deluxe, plus two animation production studios: Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank and Williams Street Studios in Atlanta. James will be located in the company’s Atlanta office, reporting to Shirley Powell, SVP/Corporate Communications, TBS, Inc. and will work closely with Stuart Snyder, EVP/COO for the group.
 
Stavros Hilaris has been appointed Consumer Technology Officer for National Geographic Ventures (NGV) where he will head new technology efforts for the various units of NGV. He will be based at the company’s Washington, D.C. office. 
 
News Broadcast Network (NBN) has added four new staffers for its video production, operations and reporting departments: Daniella Baider Berkson will be a Senior Producer; Kathleen LaCorte has been hired as Media Placement Specialist for the radio media tour group; and both Kacie Marczak and Nicole Solazzo have been added to the company’s Reporting department.

Monday – A18-49 Analysis:  FOX commanded the lead Monday night at 3.5/11 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. FOX started off in first place at 8p with Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and a 2.8/9, then FOX burned the competition during 9p by winning with Hell’s Kitchen at 4.1/12. CBS kept control of the 10p time period as the CSI: Miami encore won with 2.4/7.
