Cynopsis: Kids!

07/21/10

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 21, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Cartoon Network picks up a family version of FremantleMedia‘s game show Hole in the Wall (10×30). With casting underway, the live-action game series will pit two teams of families against one another as they got through the cut-out course.  The series, which aired in the US initially with adult contestants on Fox (2008/9), will be produced by FremantleMedia North America.  Hole in the Wall debuted on Fuji TV (Japan) in July 2006 and continues to run on the channel, as well as on channels worldwide.  Hole in the Wall will join Cartoon Network’s other popular game series, Dude, What Would Happen and Destroy Build Destroy, which air Wednesdays at 8p and 8:30p, respectively.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Broadcaster TVE (Spain) joins Spain’s Imira Entertainment and Enne Entertainment Studios as a co-production partner on the new 3D animated series Escape Hockey (26×26, www.escapehockey.com).  Created by Enne Entertainment and targeted to K6-12, Escape Hockey is a comedy space adventure that revolves around Dan and his pals who have all been taken from their planet to a prison planet.  To return home they must win the Escape Hockey Tournament  the world cup of the galaxy  which means playing against dangerous inmates as they all vie for their freedom.  Two versions of the series will be produced, a regular TV version and an interactive version that will include the game format “Watch and Play,” which lets viewers at home to play along in mini-games that are built into the series.  The show is being developed with VOD, online, interactive TV and gaming platforms in mind.  Additionally, TVE plans to develop online social communities based on the series that will be featured on its website.  Imira is also handling worldwide sales for the series, which it will showcase at Mipcom this fall while looking to ink pre-sales and for further co-production partners.

ABC TV (Australia) has ordered a second season of the tween/teen-targeted series Dance Academy ( www.abc.net.au/abc3/danceacademy/ ) for ABC1 and ABC3.  The second season (26×30) of the live-action drama is slated to begin production at the end of January 2011 with Joanna Werner, of Werner Films Production, returning as producer.  The new season will see Tara Webster return for her second year at the National Academy of Dance and vie for a chance to represent Australia in a major world ballet competition  all while trying to maintain her social life and making it through adolescence.  ZDF Enterprises handles international distribution for Dance Academy and plans to announce new deals soon.

A musical adaptation of actress/author Julianne Moore‘s kids’ book, Freckleface Strawberry, will open Off Broadway this October 3, 2010 at the New World Stages in NYC, per Variety.  Directed by Buddy Crutchfield, the family-targeted show was adapted for the stage by Rose Caiola and Gary Kupper and features music/lyrics by Kupper and choreography by Gail Pennington Crutchfield.  Previews begin for the show on September 9.  Casting for the show was not announced.
