Cynopsis: Kids!
07.17.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 17, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP HEADLINES

Nickelodeon is prepping its biggest slate of new preschool content in years. CynKids recently caught up with Teri Weiss, EVP, production and development at Nickelodeon Preschool, who told us one thing’s for sureall content will live beyond the small screen in tablet and other interactive extensions. “Everyone is thinking now about game extensions of the shows. We’ve been doing interactive TV for a long time but we can go so much deeper with the curriculum with the tablet,” she says. “Tablet content is being developed simultaneously with linear TV content, with the idea of taking the content from episode to episode and extending it creatively and thematically.” Here’s what Weiss had to say about a few hot new shows in development:

On literacy show Wallykazam (launching early 2014):
“We spoke to a lot of parents and teachers about vocabulary and the way we talk to kids. If you tell an engaging story and you’re using words a child might not know but story is compelling, the child is likely to ask what it means. We’re investing here in how a story is being told.”

On Blaze and the Monster Machines (launching summer 2014), which incorporates STEM curriculum concepts into daily life as a monster truck:
“We are having so much fun with the music. We have a song about adhesion. It’s a complicated concept, but when you’re singing the song you remember what it is. We also have a song about fusion, another one about force. They are all integrated and propel the plot line.”

On spinoff with an older Dora and Friends (launching fall 2014):
“We thought it would be interesting to change the dynamic and have other human friends with Dora as peers, so we could tell different kinds of stories and have more inter-personal situations. There’s still a tremendous amount of magical realms and portals she goes through… and a tremendous amount of Spanish.”

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Even before the debut of the second season of NFL Rush Zone, Nickelodeon and the NFL announced that a third season of the animated series will return to Nicktoons and NFL Network in the fall with 20 episodes. A co-production of Nick and the NFL based on the NFL’s online world for kids, the new season will see the Guardians develop enhanced powers to protect the NFL (and while they’re at it, the world) from villains. Voice talent includes San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte, and Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III. Season two premiered on Nicktoons last Sunday, July 14th and will re-air on NFL Network Saturday, July 20th at 8a. All 32 NFL teams will be showcased throughout the series, which continues to feature NFL Films game footage.

Those lovable lapin creatures known as Rabbids will make their television debut in Nickelodeon‘s CG-animated series Rabbids Invasion, premiering Saturday, August 3 at 11:30a (ET/PT). All episodes will be available on iTunes, Amazon Instant Video Xbox Video, PlayStation Store, Samsung Media Hub and Vudu starting day after air.

The Hub Network is all set to debut the Hasbro Studios feature film, “My Little Pony Equestria Girls,” in which Ponyville’s Twilight Sparkle ventures into an alternate reality where she’s transformed into gasp a teenage girl. The fun begins on Sunday, September 1 at noon, ET.

Several big summer series premieres kicked off last weekend. Who tuned in?

  • The Haunted Hathaways (Nickelodeon, Saturday, 8p): Supernatural hijinks are in the house when a mom and her daughters relocate to New Orleans and discover they share their new home with a ghost family. A scary-successful debut too. Hathaways bowed with 3.3 million total viewers.
  • Beware the Batman (Cartoon Network, Saturday, 10a): The CGI action series returns the caped crusader to the small screen with new twists and turns in never-ending duty of Gotham City crime-fighting. Part of Cartoon’s Saturday morning DC Nation block, the series is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and will precede Teen Titans in the lineup along with new animated shorts.
  • Camp Lakebottom (Disney XD, Saturday, 9:30a): A 12-year-old prankster headed for Camp Sunny Smiles ends up at the rundown Camp Lakebottom when his bus takes a wrong turn in this animated comedy produced by 9 Story Entertainment. A preview of the series was available on iTunes before its television debuta first for 9 Story.

Nickelodeon ordered 20 additional episodes of its hit comedy Sam & Cat, currently the network’s No. 1 live-action series, averaging 3.7 million total viewers since launch. The series airs regularly Saturdays at 8p. Among the series’ early milestones: Series premiere drew over 4.2 million viewers, making it the net’s biggest live-action debut in three years. Since its June 8 launch, Sam & Cat is the top live-action app on the Nick App, and the most visited page on Nick.com.

Get ready for a Hulk-sized buildup for Marvel’s Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., the first Marvel-produced Hulk animated series debuting on Disney XD with a two-part episode Aug. 11 (11a-noon). Beginning Aug. 1, the series premiere will be available for verified users of Watch Disney products and Disney XD on Demand. A new game, Damma Storm Smash, will be available on DisneyXD.com, and from Aug. 5-11 the series premiere will launch on iTunes.

After months of fanfare, Disney Channel’s Teen Beach Movie premieres Friday (19) at 8p. CynKids got a little behind-the-scenes intel from Adam Bonnett, Disney EVP, original programming:

Why is it time for another big Disney Channel musical?
It’s always time for a Disney Channel musical, but what makes “Teen Beach Movie” so special is its fresh spin on the musical genre. We want to give our audience something they’ve never seen before, which is a musical comedy that has fun with the conventions of breaking out into song and dance and taking a look at how funny and over-the-top it can be at times.

What song is most likely to be stuck in viewers’ heads after viewing?
No question, “Crusin’ for a Brusin'” is the one. It’s an unforgettable musical number that showcases Ross Lynch in a way that viewers have never seen him before, along with our other stars including John DeLuca. What our audience will connect with in that number is when you hear your favorite song, you can’t help but start dancing and moving, which is exactly what happens to our character Brady (Ross Lynch) in the story. My personal favorite is “Can’t Stop Signing.” It’s always stuck in my head.

What was the most challenging part of filming?
The heat. We were in Puerto Rico, and trying to dance on hot sand is not easy. Plus we had a bunch of bikers in leather jackets, leather pants and even leather gloves surviving the Puerto Rican weather.

And the coolest discovery during filming?
Uncovering the cast’s hidden talents that they don’t always get to explore when they’re on dramas or sitcoms. Whether it’s seeing Maia Mitchell blossom as a surfer, or some of the other actors shine as dancers or dancers who acted for the first time, it was a great experience.
