Though its $9.99 price for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs played a large role in driving massive subscriber growth at Netflix, now at  23.6 million subscribers, the company said the costs are too high and it is upping the fee for its all-you-can-eat combo option. The company will now offer the unlimited plans for both streaming and DVDs at $15.98, a 60% increase. Subscribers who choose unlimited streaming only without any DVDs will still pay $7.99 per month, while consumers who want unlimited DVDs without any streaming will also pay $7.99 per month. “There is still a very large continuing demand for DVDs both from our existing members as well as non-members. Given the long life we think DVDs by mail will have, treating DVDs as a $2 add on to our unlimited streaming plan neither makes great financial sense nor satisfies people who just want DVDs. Creating an unlimited DVDs by mail plan (no streaming) at our lowest price ever, $7.99, does make sense and will ensure a long life for our DVDs by mail offering,” the company said in a blog post. Many consumers expressed displeasure online over the change, but Wall Street responded favorably and shares in the company traded up after the news. The company reports second quarter earnings July 25.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
 

In its newest deal of this ilk, Facebook will now rent episodes of Doctor Who via a partnership with BBC Worldwide. Facebook users can rent the program by visiting the Doctor Who page and using Facebook credits. Users need to watch the episodes within a 48-hour window of renting them.
 
Michael Eisner-owned digital studio Vuguru launched its latest multi-platform series The Booth at the End on Hulu in a first-run, multi-year deal that calls for five 22-minute episodes to be released each Monday on the video site to U.S. audiences. The program was originally licensed in Canada to Rogers Media for release across all platforms and also to Fox International Channels, which ran the show in the United Kingdom.

Internet TV network Revision3 added a new show to its network with the launch of Delicious Steak with Dan Brown, the YouTube star whose videos have racked up more than 85 million views.

CNBC.com launched a new section of its web site that explains key economics concepts in short videos and text. If you want to know about bonds and rates, central banking, mergers and acquisitions and other topics, check out CNBC Explains.

Major League Baseball saw a nice lift in social media activity thanks to its first ever “social media derby” that integrated tweets from baseball players into the State Farm Home Run Derby Monday night as part of All-Star Week. The 23 players who actively tweeted during the event earned more than 121,000 new followers between them during an 18-hour period. Household ratings were up slightly for the ESPN telecast.

Google+ is adding more than one million users a day and should reach 20 million by this weekend, according to an analysis conducted by Ancestry.com founder Paul Allen. Those rates rival the growth of Facebook in 2009 when it was adding nearly 1 million users each day, he said.

Digital agency veteran Jason Heller has opened a new shop called Agiliti that is focused on digital marketing operations management. The co-founder of interactive agency Mass Transit Interactive is now working with marketers to evaluate and assess their digital marketing operations, including their work with digital agencies.

Your co-workers know what you’re doing when you look under the table at a meeting. A new study commissioned by business video platform provider Qumu and conducted by Harris Interactive says that two-thirds of online Americans believe that their colleagues are hiding a mobile phone under the table or in a notebook, taking a restroom break, or pretending to tie their shoes just to get a mobile fix during a meeting. The study also found that three-quarters of online Americans believe workers are using their mobile phones to do things they won’t do on their work computers, such as look for another job, evaluate plastic surgery options and buy lingerie.

 
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Interactive guide maker Rovi inked an agreement with Toshiba for its guides to be included in Toshiba TV sets, Blu-ray players and the manufacturer’s mobile and tablet devices starting in Spring 2012. Under the deal, the two companies will also launch new interactive ad capabilities on Toshiba devices.
 
Meredith Local Media Group relaunched ten of its local TV station Web sites using local media technology provider WorldNow‘s technology and tools for editorial content, ad trafficking, and mobile and online video. Meredith is also using news produced by the Raycom News Network, a partnership between WorldNow and Raycom to provide 24-7 national news coverage online.
 
Measurement company Kantar Media and cable operator Charter expanded their partnership to measure TV audiences in Charter markets beyond Los Angeles. Kantar pairs its data with Charter’s set-top box data to better understand how audience viewing habits translate into purchases.

Rovio, the maker of the wildly popular online app Angry Birds, has paired up with retail marketing company TCC to license the game for retail loyalty programs in a move that gives the birds a perch in shopper marketing programs in supermarkets, drugstores and other retail outlets. Angry Birds has been downloaded more than 200 million times.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Canoe CEO David Verklin is leaving the post at the end of the summer, and current Chief Operating Officer Kathy Timko will take over as interim CEO. Canoe is a joint venture of the six largest cable operators to deliver interactive ads.
 
 
Razorfish expanded its social media practice with the promotion of Chris Bowler to VP Social Media and with the hiring of three new social media specialists. In his new role, Bowler will lead the agency’s social strategy in the United States, working with new team members: Matt Heindl, Director, Social Media; Kevin Ray, Associate Director, Social Media; and Hartman Wong, Social Media Manager
 
Video technology firm AdoTube hired T.J. Sullivan as Senior VP of Sales after he most recently worked at digital marketplace Outrigger Media, a company he co-founded. He’ll stay on as a board member at Outrigger. AdoTube’s technology helps deliver in-stream ads.
