Cynopsis: Kids!
01.09.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 9, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.

LAS VEGAS–Greetings from the Consumer Electronic Show, that vast playground of technology where even the most jaded grownup can’t help but feel like a kid. We knew it was going to be a great show for Cynopsis Kids! when Big Bird helped Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs introduce the new Qualcomm – Sesame Street mobile apps venture during Jacob’s opening night keynote (more about that in the edition). And Lego’s latest Mindstorms EV2 robots are proving the company is about more than child’s play. The news will be coming fast and furious this week, so please follow along @CynopsisMedia and @CathyOlson67.

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM LITTLE AIRPLANE

LITTLE AIRPLANE ACADEMY 3-DAY SEMINAR
“HOW TO MAKE A GREAT PRESCHOOL SERIES”
February 9, 10, 11

Little Airplane Productions is accepting applications for a unique workshop taught by accomplished preschool TV veterans on each step of creating a high-quality preschool series. Topics include Writing, Pitching, Legal, Design, Music, Directing, Producing, Distribution and more. A panel of noteworthy Children’s TV broadcasters will be on hand to discuss pitching to a network.

Limited to 30 participants. Contact Tone Thyne: [email protected]..

CARRIAGE

Bundle, Up? There’s renewed buzz this week about the imminent debut of technology from Intel, Sony and friends that effectively would unbundle the cable model. AT&T threw its hat into the SVOD ring Monday, announcing it would offer its U-Verse subscribers access to its 1,500 titles for $5 per month. In fact, the package model has been “unbundling” for a while now. And content behemoths find themselves in less of a position to hold out popular kids networks to assure carriage of other programming. Just witness Viacom’s nearly three-week showdown with DirecTV last summer, when pulling Nickelodeon and MTV, among other networks, failed to guarantee carriage of its Epix movie channel.

Sesame Street episodes are among the 1,000 videos PBS and PBS Kids will deliver through Roku’s Internet streaming devices as part of a gaggle of new Roku programmer deals including Time Warner Cable, Dish Network’s Blockbuster, Fox’s TV Everywhere service, iHeartRadio, NBCUniversal’s Syfy and Vevo.

CONTENT

Qualcomm is taking a walk on Sesame Street. The global wireless provider and Sesame Workshop are collaborating on a series of apps for smart phones and tablets. Qualcomm is offering a sneak peak of the first apps – the guitar-driven Abby’s Fairy Rock and vocab-based Big Birds Words – on the CES show floor. Coolest technology feature? The first-ever use of text recognition via the Qualcomm Vuforia augmented reality platform in Big Birds Words. The two companies also are continuing their collaboration in India bringing lessons about healthy living, literacy and math to migrant families, and later this year will launch a project in China to provide emergency preparedness for families with young children.

More Kids Apps: RRKidz’s flagship brand Reading Rainbow is partnering with National Geographic Kids to bolster its interactive subscription reading service for iPad with NatGeo nonfiction books and video field trips… DHX Media is bringing an app based on Nickelodeon series Yo Gabba Gabba! to iPhone, iPad, iPhone Touch and Google Android devices. The $3.99 Yo Gabba Gabba! Hello Friends! app invites preschoolers to interact with characters through games and activities… U.K.’s P2 Games debuted “The Wheels on the Bus” app for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. The app features an interactive keyboard where kids can learn classic nursery rhymes, plus puzzles, coloring activities and a sticker sound board… Brit-based series Peppa Pig is crossing the gaming pond. Entertainment One Family will debut P2 Games’ Peppa Pig Happy Miss Chicken app in the States this month… Following up on its two Drip Drops digibooks, TCKL Inc. gave the media a preview of its patent-pending 3D coloring app for kids ages 2-6. The Drip Drops: Color The World app combines animation and augmented reality to turn an iPad into a 3D coloring book and will be available for download at the end of January.

Nickelodeon is kicking off 2013 with a half-hour primetime Dora special, “Dora Rocks!,” airing at 7 p.m. Jan. 14. The network is engaged in an advertising/merchandising deal with Target through which the retailer will carry exclusive Dora-themed apparel, DVDs, electronics and other merchandise through April.

New year, new look for Nick Jr. in the U.K. On air, just-launched interstitials and the tagline “Every day’s an adventure” tout the imaginative learning encouraged through shows like Peppa Pig, Dora the Explorer and upcoming Guess How Much I Love YouThe Adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare. Additional shortform content including The Go!Go!Go! Show is due in early 2013. Online, Nickjr.co.uk has a new “Grown ups” section for parents that includes a roundup of pertinent articles.

Canadian network Teletoon will debut new original series Rocket Monkeys Jan. 10 as part of its Thursday evening programming block.

Televix Entertainment snagged distribution rights throughout Latin America for Breakthrough Entertainment’s conservation-minded preschool series Kinderzoo.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Rentrak is on the move. The company won the bid by Mobile Content Venture, a joint venture comprising 12 broadcast nets that operate the Dyle mobile TV service, to provide the first mobile broadcast TV measurement for local markets. MCV represents 35 markets across the U.S.

The Wiggles this week released their latest album, “Celebration,” through Razor & Tie in digital format only. The album features 20 songs from the Aussie group’s 2012 Celebration tour, the final tour with original members Greg, Murray, Jeff and Anthony.

GeoPalz, manufacturer of decorative pedometers for kids, is launching the ibitz PowerKey for children. Connected to select Bluetooth 4.0 devices, the pedometers track wearers’ physical activity and delegates points to unlock rewards via the GeoPalz kid-centric Web site.

The Berenstain Bears are infusing a few classic titles with Christian values in the franchise’s latest three Living Lights I Can Read! books: God Made the Colors, Thank God For Good Health and The Trouble With Things.

Kidz Gear is pumping the volume on its line of decibel-friendly Volume Limit Headphones. After success with its initial gray earbuds, it just rolled out pink, orange, blue, green and purple.

Let them eat cake: Strawberry Shortcake is making global strides. American Greetings Properties and Medialink renewed their partnership for Strawberry Shortcake with apparel company Young Chang Industries in Malaysia, and AGP and licensing agent Exim added new client Pacific as a new Strawberry Shortcake partner in Mexico.

Indie production house Creating4Kids appointed Carmella Johns Unltd. (CJU) the exclusive worldwide licensing agency for its “Bigfroot Friends” property featuring fruit-loving Bigfoot-like characters. Initial rollout of licensed products will be in mid-February at Toy Fair.

INSIDE THE BELTWAY

In a good news move for all kids content on the Web, the FCC is relaxing its rules regarding in-flight Internet connections. The move is aimed at stimulating the economy and encouraging technology advances, including ways to make the wifi signal stronger in the air. Parents everywhere are sleeping just a little better tonight.

BY THE NUMBERS

Disney Channel continues its assault on Nickelodeon. The net rang in the new year with the most-watched opening week in its history, sweeping the competition across Kids 2-11, Kids 6-11 and Tween 9-14. The week of Dec. 31-Jan. 6 marked Disney Channel’s 82nd consecutive week at No. 1 in Kids 6-11 and Tweens. The Jan. 4 premiere of “Tangled” was the week’s No. 1 scripted cable telecast in Total Viewers (5.4 million), and the top telecast across Kids 2-11, Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14. In related news, no official word from the Walt Disney Co. regarding rumors of impending layoffs in its studio and interactive units.

There’s no moss growing under The Hub. The Discovery Communications-Hasbro joint venture wrapped 2012 with its fifth-consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth across key demographics including Kids 2-11 and 6-11, according to the network. Q4 included the much-anticipated debut of Hasbro Studios-produced Littlest Pet Shop. The animated series, paired with My Little Pony on Saturday mornings, became The Hub’s top-ranked original series of 2012. In other Hub news, the network this week adds early-morning series Animaniacs.

Cartoon Network ranked No. 1 for Total Day delivery of boys 6-11 and 9-14 for the first week of January, and No. 1 in Early Prime delivery of boys 9-14.  The net scored double-digit delivery gains compared the same week in 2012, Total Day delivery of Kids 2-11 grew by 20%, Kids 6-11 by 33% and Tweens 9-14 by 33%.
