Cynopsis: Kids!

1/31/07

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 31, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

DreamWorks Animation and Aardman Animations are calling it quits to their exclusive partnership.  The split appears to be mutual with both sides acknowledging their success and owning up to their differences.  Jeffrey Katzenberg CEO, DreamWorks Animation explained, “… [DreamWorks and Aardman] different business goals no longer support each other,” while Aardman’s co-owners Peter Lord and David Sproxton said, “… both companies are aware that our ambitions have moved apart, and it feels like the right time to move on.”  Aardman plans to unveil its future production and distribution plans soon.  The two companies officially teamed-up in 1999 in a deal under which Aardman would produce and deliver up to five animated feature films to DreamWorks, and which to date has yielded three movies: Chicken Run (2000), Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), and Flushed Away (2006).

YTV Canada, Inc. has received approval from The Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications Commission for a broadcast license to launch and operate The Anime Channel, targeted to Teens 18+, in Canada.  YTV’s license for The Anime Channel will expire August 31, 2013.  Under its application YTV stated The Anime Channel lineup will feature a minimum of 65% of programming broadcast per year will be anime and a maximum of 35% will be anime-related programming content.

CBeebies, the BBC’s preschool channel for K2-6, will launch its new on-air look and three new series this March 2007.  Additionally, CBeebies Radio will debut in March as part of BBC 7, broadcasting from 2-5p daily.  A redesigned CBeebies website will re-launch later in the spring.  New series joining CBeebies:

  • In the Night Garden narrated by Sir Derek Jacoby, the show is recorded in HD in a real woodland setting and focuses on imagination and a community of toys living together, the show comes from Ragdoll Entertainment;
  • Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies is a mixed live action/animated about a group of baby animal characters and featuring live animal footage, the series is a co-production of CBeebies, National Geographic Kids Entertainment and King Rollo Films;
  • Tommy Zoom is a multiplatform mixed animation/live-action property that revolves around Daniel and Tommy as they find solutions to everyday problems consulting with superhero/Tommy’s alter-ego Tommy Zoom when need be, the show is a CBeebies production.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Decode Entertainment has appointed Penguin Group (USA) and Simon & Schuster as publishing licensees for its animated preschool show, Franny’s FeetGrosset & Dunlap, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group, is set to launch Franny’s Feet storybooks, readers, stickerbooks, a series of novelty books, such as board, lift-the-flap and word game activity books in 2008. In a separate deal, Simon & Schuster will launch Franny’s Feet color & activity books and kits, which will also roll out in 2008.

Big Tent Entertainment has inked a deal with Breyer Animal Creations, the noted maker of model horses, to serve as the master toy partner for the tween-targeted property, The Saddle Club.  The Saddle Club TV series airs on Discovery Kids.  Additional episodes of The Saddle Club, an Australian-Canadian co-production, will be produced this year in North America, which will result in a total of 72 produced episodes.  The TV series is based on author Bonnie Bryan book series of the same name, which includes 110 titles and two spin-off series.  Earlier this month Random House re-launched the book series.

In other Random House news, its imprint Del Rey Manga has acquired the worldwide publishing rights to Make 5 Wishes, a two-volume color manga created in collaboration with recording artist Avril Lavigne.  Volume one will be published on April 10th, and follows an introverted teenager, Hana, who discovers a website that will change her life. After an evil spirit grants her a series of wishes that go bad, Hana meets her hero, Lavigne, who helps her get back on track and overcome her own personal evils.  The second, and final volume will be published in July 2007.  Terry McBride, CEO, Nettwerk Management brokered the deal.

As part of the Teletubbies 10th anniversary, Koch Records has entered into a deal with Ragdoll Worldwide Ltd. to reissue four previously released Teletubbies music titles in the US and Canada in 2007.  Teletubbies the Album and Nursery Rhymes will be released under the Koch Records label in the spring, with Bedtime & Playtime Stories and Exercise with the Teletubbies to follow in the fall.  Ragdoll and BBC Worldwide manage the Teletubbies brand around the world.

GSI Commerce Inc., a provider of e-commerce solutions, and Nickelodeon, have inked a multiyear extension to their e-commerce partnership, which includes Web and order processing technologies, fulfillment, customer care operations, selected paid search and affiliate marketing services.
