Good morning, it’s Wednesday, January 30, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing, coming to you from the NATPE 2008 convention in Las Vegas.
Yahoo announced that profit dropped 23% during the Q4 amid weak online ad sales and said it would lay off approximately 1,000 of its 14,300 employees next month to prepare for further “headwinds” expected in the marketplace. The company also unveiled a major new agreement with AT&T to begin sharing ad revenue on multiple platforms and to offer content to the telco’s TV, broadband and mobile customers. Att.net will relaunch next quarter powered by Yahoo applications and offer AT&T Wireless customers access to these services for no extra charge. Meanwhile AT&T U-verse TV customers will continue to have access to Yahoo content through the service’s interactive U-bar feature, available in select cities.
NBC.com announced it is launching a full roster of WAP-based mobile sites in the coming weeks for most of NBC’s shows, including nearly 40 mobile sites and three mobile video channels. NBC.com will also introduce widgets to allow mobile users to access content directly from the applications. Both NBCU CEO Jeff Zucker and NBCU Cable Entertainment/Digital President spoke yesterday at NATPE of trying to covert analog dollars to digital pennies. Even small CPMs across 40 mobile sites should help.
MyLifetime.com is launching a package of content for Valentine’s Day to help provide the online “tools” couples need to reignite their passion between the sheets. “The Magic Moment” interviews couples about the first time they made love. “Astrose*ology with Kiki T” provides love advice with an astrology bent. Making Mr. Right is a Lifetime original movie streaming on Sat. Feb. 9 starring Christina Cox and Dean Cain, the site’s first feature-length film offering.
Interactive recruiting agency Digital Artist Management Inc. is transforming its Production Road digital content division into a full service developer/producer of digital entertainment through a worldwide network of more than 100 global development studios. Production Road currently develops interactive content for video games, visual effects, broadcast television and animation studios in North America.
SiTV is partnering with video community site ziddio.com to promote its reality show Model Latina. Ziddio users will chose 10 of the show’s 17 contestants by voting on their video profiles.
MtvU extended its reach to 700 college communities nationwide, launching on Charter, Verizon FiOS, Suddenlink, AT&T U-verse and 70 other systems. The deals represent 2.6 million additional subscribers.
AMC‘s newest original dramatic series, Breaking Bad, produced by Sony Pictures Television, has already ranked in the top five on iTunes’ “Top Downloaded TV Shows” after just two episodes. This past Sunday’s episode reached number one.
Metacafe and Endemol USA will produce a new online interactive series called “Buzzed,” putting trivia questions to bar patrons as they stumble out of their favorite watering holes. Contestants will also have the opportunity to win cash for correct answers (to buy more drinks, presumably) or “drunk dial” a friend as a lifeline feature. Fans will be able to submit trivia questions and physical challenges for contestants, as well as rate, share and comment on the show’s episodes. Let’s hope they will give them a ride home after the shoot.
Web show resident.net has come up with a brand new way to monetize itself. Producer Lori Harfenist is putting its the spring season up for sale to the highest bidder on eBay, offering a 12-week sponsorship package including 15-second post-rolls on each of the biweekly episodes, accompanying banner ads and URL links on its YouTube channel. The auction begins on Friday, Feb. 1 under the “residential auctions” account.
Global online video site WorldTV introduced a new set of features to enable web video enthusiasts to track and analyze the habits of their viewers, including viewership totals per day for the past month, geographic viewer location by country and average time spent per viewer. The service also released its “Top 100 Cities” – locations from around the world that are watching the most video. The top five cities are currently Madrid, Paris, London, Bogota and Barcelona.
P2P IPTV service Babelgum launched a new web-based interface that works together with the service’s client software that resides on users’ desktops. Viewers can search on the site by genre through the thousands of hours of video available; when they make a selection the client automatically loads.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
IAC chairman Barry Diller returned fire to Liberty Media CEO John Malone calling his attempt to remove him from the IAC board “preposterous” in an issued statement. Liberty filed a lawsuit on Monday attempting to reclaim voting rights it gave to IAC in a previous agreement, claiming the agreement was voided when IAC tried to split up the internet conglomerate against its will.
Sprint is back in talks with Clearwire over jointly forming a nationwide WiMax network after Sprint’s previous CEO ended their arrangement last year, reports The Wall Street Journal.
Tremor Media selected video content and advertising optimization firm Digitalsmiths to enable dynamically and contextually targeted video advertising across Tremor Media’s network using Digitalsmith’s VideoSense solution.
~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~
Yahoo named former VeriSign CTO Ari Balogh as Chief Technology Officer, replacing Farzad Nazem who retired last May. Arik will be based at Yahoo! Sunnyvale, Calif. headquarters and will report directly to CEO Jerry Yang.
Digitalsmiths added former Turner Broadcasting exec William Stratton as COO and online media veteran Petra Weishaupt-Smith as CFO. Both will be based in the company’s main offices in Raleigh-Durham, N.C. and report to Digitalsmiths CEO Ben Weinberger.
Former Fox Sports producer Skip Fredricks joined podcast network Wizzard Media as SVP/Content Programming. Skip will be responsible for the development, acquisition and packaging of professionally-produced content and securing sponsorship deals for worldwide distribution.
Online advertising company Undertone Networks hired former Weather.com head of ad sales Peter Green as SVP/Ad Sales. He will be based in the company’s New York headquarters, reporting to Michael Cassidy, President and CEO.
Video Jug is a well-designed hub for online factual video content, proving humorous but useful instruction on anything from How to Stop Telemarketers from Calling to How to Tie a Windsor Knot. Its “Speed Date The Candidate” series offers bite-sized insights into the platforms of the leading presidential candidates. Check out the advice videos from William Shatner, where the actor provides tips on acting, writing, parenting and, of course, singing. Mr. Shatner’s singing career has been revived as of late thanks to video sharing sites like YouTube.
