Good morning, it’s Wednesday, January 2, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Apple is close to announcing plans to make 20th Century Fox and Disney movies available as online rentals, according to reports. (Apple CEO Steve Jobs is likely saving the official announcement for his Macworld Expo keynote on Jan. 14). Customers would pay a fee to download titles viewable on computers, iPods and presumably Apple TV devices that would expire after a short window of time. Netflix, Amazon.com and Blockbuster’s Movielink are competitors in this space.
Wal-Mart, however, has thrown in the towel in this arena. Wal-Mart.com quietly pulled the plug on its video download service late last month as Hewlett Packard decided to discontinue the back-office technology that powered it. The service, popular with studios because it offered variable pricing, struggled with compatibility issues as Wal-Mart downloads could not be burned to DVDs or watched on video iPods.
Warner Music Group joined with Universal Music and EMI offering DRM-free tracks through Amazon.com‘s MP3 store launched in Sept. 2007. Amazon claims more than 2.9 million DRM-free downloads have been made on the service so far.
Radiohead released “In Rainbows” on CD in stores yesterday, the album it distributed online as a pay-what-you-will offering on Oct. 2007. Indie label ATO Records is distributing.
Remember the 7-minute Sopranos? ABC is preparing Lost fans for the series return on Jan. 31 with its own “Lost in 8:15.” (815 is the Oceanic Flight number the shipwrecked cast was on.) Look for the extended trailer on ABC.com. (Click on “Catch up on Lost”.)
NHL.com featured extensive coverage of yesterday’s inaugural outdoor NHL Winter Classic including live broadband shows, celebrity blogs and guest columns from Discovery Channel and Food Network personalities.
TVGuide.com launched Body Talk on New Years Eve, a 5-part online series tackling the issue of body image and the unrealistic standards set by Hollywood. Part one names Chris Crocker’s “Leave Britney Alone!” rant as the top beauty story of 2007.
Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton has broken all ties with YouTube and is testing a white label video service called Twistage to make PerezHilton.com the destination for his video postings, according to TVWeek. Despite attracting 1.5 million unique visitors in Nov., the blogger has only received $5,000 in ad sharing revenue from YouTube as part of its partner program.
Ad supported online music start-up SpiralFrog raised an additional $2 million in funding through a private placement of secured notes.

The FCC approved new rules giving broadcasters the right to make a “phased transition” to digital broadcasting and reduce or terminate their analog service before the Feb. 17, 2009 deadline. $40 government coupons are now available at www.dtv2009.gov to help consumers purchase digital converter boxes necessary to view TV on analog sets after the transition. Half of U.S. Households (57 million) now own at least one digital-ready TV set, according to the Consumer Electronics Association.
EchoStar officially split its business into two companies as of Jan. 1. EchoStar Communications Corp. will operate pay TV service Dish Network while EchoStar Holding Corp. will contain recently acquired Sling Media as well as other tech assets.
Apple applied for a patent late last month for a system that would allow customers to place coffee, fast food or merchandise orders from a wireless device, then jump in front of those ordering in person when picking up their order.
~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
AOL completed its acquisition of online contextual advertising company Quigo, according to Private Equity Hub.
Advertisers will increase spending sharply on social networking sites in 2008, according to eMarketer, with U.S. spending rising 70% from an estimated $920 million in 2007 to $1.56 billion this year.
E-commerce spending through the first 57 days of the holiday season (Nov. 1 – Dec. 27) increased 19% to $28 billion this year, according to ComScore.
Amazon.com remained the top retail site for the week ending Dec. 22, according to Hitwise, with a 12.03% category market share. Wal-Mart.com (7.94%) and Target.com (5.06%) rounded out the top 3.
Walt Disney Internet Group named A.D. “Bud” Albers as Chief Technology Officer. He will be based in the company’s North Hollywood headquarters. Bud most recently served as SVP and CTO for MediaNet Digital.
Dominic Schmitt, a former VP of Product Management and Client Services for AOL subsidiary TACODA, joined HDTV producer BlueMarvel as VP/Media Platforms.
AOL News launched a neat political-themed “Hot Seat” widget compiling polling questions from popular political blogs including The Huffington Post, Time.com’s Swampland, Slate.com, The Politico, Crooks & Liars, Power Line and Captain’s Quarters. Users answer multiple choice questions that are tallied nationally as well as by state. Candidates are also given the opportunity to comment on the results, although none seem to have so far.
