Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 24, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

So, in case you were at an off-planet retreat yesterday the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced nominees for the 79th Academy Awards.  In the Best Animated Feature Film category, this year’s Oscar nominations go to Disney/Pixar’s Cars, Warner Bros. Happy Feet and Sony Pictures Animation’s Monster House.  The other animated feature films up for contention but not getting nods were Fox/Blue Sky’s Ice Age: The Meltdown, DreamWorks/Aardman Animation’s movies Flushed Away and Over the Hedge, and Sony Picture Animation’s Open Season.  The Academy Awards will be handed out on ABC on Sunday, February 25, 2007.  A full list of Oscar nominees can be found at http://www.oscar.com/nominees/?pn=list .

MORE KIDS STUFF

PBS Kids Sprout will host, Sprout’s Special Valentine Delivery a 12-hour event on Wednesday, February 14, 6a-6p.  Programming for the day will feature the debut of the second season of The Many Adventures of Mr. Mailman, and Mr. Mailman will also deliver special on-air holiday wishes from the network’s characters including Barney, Calliou and Sesame Street’s Elmo, The Hoobs and others.  Sprout will support programming for the day through its website ( www.sproutonline.com ) where kids/parents/caregivers can send virtual Valentine’s Day cards.  Additionally, in conjunction with the new episodes of Mr. Mailman the network website will feature a downloadable passport and cutout of Mr. Mailman, games and other related activities for families.

BET premieres One Night Only (6×30′) a new 6-part original series this week, airing Tuesdays at 730p. The reality docu-soap follows a group of high school kids and their drama teacher in New Orleans as they race to put on the Dreamgirls play. It is also set against the backdrop of the Hurricane Katrina tragedy and these teenagers’ struggle to deal with the rebuilding of their homes, school, and community while also trying to enjoy their teenage years. The Dreamgirls’ film star, Jennifer Hudson, will make a guest appearance as will actor Blair Underwood, Dwayne Martin and Tisha Campbell Martin, choreographer George Faison and TLC host/celebrity makeup artist Damone Roberts.

Starz Media has entered into a multi-year licensing and distribution agreement with Vongo, Starz Entertainment’s broadband video download platform.  Under the deal Starz Media will provide Vongo with 250 additional new movies and other video content titles for VOD or eventually for purchase and download.  New titles available to be available on Vongo as part of the deal include anime series Astro Boy (50 eps), Ghost in the shell and Ninja Scroll among others.

Muslim teen girls, of whom there are upwards of 400,000 in the US, are getting their own periodical this month with the debut of Muslim Girl Magazine.  The bi-monthly lifestyle magazine is targeted to American Muslim girls 14-18 yrs old and aims to challenge the stereotypes of Muslim girls in the US and will feature teen girls that are proud of both being an American and a Muslim.  Muslim Girl Magazine is published by Canada-based execuGo Media, and distributed worldwide by US-based RCS. Among the advertisers featured in the first issue are Fox Broadcasting and Oxford University Press.  According to a study of US Muslim teen girls commissioned by the magazine, this group is not too different from the average US teen girl in terms of what they like (e.g. TV, internet, shopping, videogames, the phone etc). With that said, there are some differences – for example, Muslim girls report they get their news from Al Jazeera, socialize at IslamiCity and among the things they do outside of school is study the Qur’an.  Thus the magazine will feature regular departments/columns including advice, Qur’an Notes, and Hot List (e.g. TV reviews).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is set to publish the videogame Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal.  Developed by Redtribe, the game will be released for Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 in fall 2007.

STONE SOUP

The Digital Family, Nickelodeon’s new research study of K8-14 and parents of K0-14 released yesterday, finds that kids and parents are embracing new technology. Both groups report they have incorporated technology into their daily lives and overall it is making life more manageable. Of course there is the less positive side of the results of the survey where it comes to skills previously perceived as important and casual interactions with one another.  The new report also incorporates findings from Nickelodeon’s 2006 research, Living in a Digital World.  Here are a couple of key findings:

Technology and managing daily life
Parents:

  • 59% of parents strongly agree that the internet helps them get things done.
  • 68% of parents believe the internet makes them more efficient and self-sufficient.

Kids:

  • 85% of kids said the internet helps them do better in school.
  • 89% of kids believe the internet helps them to be more creative.

Technology-making skills and previously standard media passe
Because of computers and the internet:

  • 27% of parents and 21% of kids no longer feel they need to be good spellers.
  • 26% of parents and 24% of kids said it’s no longer necessary to read the newspaper.
  • 20% of parents and 21% of kids said they don’t need to be able to read a map.

Because of mp3 players:

  • 23% of parents and 33% of kids 8-14 think there is no longer a need to make casual conversation.
  • 21% of parents and 31% of kids think there is no need to listen to the radio anymore.
  • 55% of parents and 45% of kids no longer see the need to purchase musical albums or CDs.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Stephen E. Snyder has been appointed COO/CBS Interactive.  He will report directly to Quincy Smith, President of the newly formed division.  Snyder will oversee all operations of the unit’s websites, which includes cbs.com, CBSNews.com, CBS SportsLine.com among others.  Prior to this Snyder spent the last nine years with CBS SportsLine.com, most recently as its SVP and GM.  CBS is looking to name a successor to Snyder at SportsLine.

Magnus Ringmar has been named Managing Director, MTV Mastiff  which is Zodiak Television‘s Swedish subsidiary.  Magnus, who will join the company in spring 2007, succeeds Louise Juel who was recently appointed VP/Zodiak Television World in Copenhagen.  Most recently, Magnus served as Sales Manager for Meter Film & Television, a unit of Metronome, for the last two years.
