Cynopsis: Sports
01.23.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 23, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

It would seem that the Dodgers have finally landed a new broadcast home. Time Warner Cable stuck a deal with the MLB franchise to broadcast team games, according to multiple reports, to win the bidding over FOX. As part of the reported agreement, Time Warner Cable will run a new RSN being developed for the team which will be developed by Guggenheim Partners. TWC will also oversee ad time for the outlet. The deal will hover around $7 billion and span the next two decades beginning with the 2014 season.

On the Air

IndyCar laid out its broadcast schedule for all 19 IZOD IndyCar Series events this season, which will include ABC’s first prime-time race as well as three doubleheaders (one on ABC and two on NBC Sports Network). The calendar will see NBC Sports Network offering the first four races of the season, starting with the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg at noon on Sunday, March 24. Then ABC begins its stretch of broadcasting six of the next seven races with the Indianapolis 500 set for 11a on Sunday, May 26. NBC Sports Network will also showcase qualifications shows for 12 events, and bring back the series IndyCar 36.

TNT is set to exclusively televise the announcement of the 2013 NBA All-Star reserves during a special one-hour pregame show on Thursday at 7p. Ernie Johnson will host the TNT NBA Tip-Off presented by Autotrader.com pregame show with analysts Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Chris Webber.

NBC Sports is set to offer 10 hours of coverage of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships from CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb., over the next two weekends, which will include live primetime coverage of the Ladies Free Skate this Saturday. NBC begins its coverage Saturday at 3p with Pairs Free Skate and Free Dance and then returns later that evening in primetime for the Ladies Short Program at 8p. Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick will host Saturday night and Sunday afternoon’s events, with Steve Schlanger hosting Saturday afternoon’s coverage.

The Mountain West Conference confirmed its new 12-team football alignment that starts with the 2013-14 academic year. The new football alignments will pit Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah State and Wyoming in the Mountain Division while Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, San Diego State, San Jose State and UNLV will land in the West Division. Each team will play five divisional games and three cross-divisional contests each year. The inaugural Mountain West Football Championship game will be played December 7, 2013 at the home stadium of the team with the highest BCS ranking.

After announcing a $30 million equity line to develop programming and distribution earlier this year, Gravity Collection now states that its funding via Lambert Private Equity has been raised to $100 million to expand the action and outdoor sports television platform’s national and global reach.

Bob Varsha takes over this season as host of Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series race coverage on SPEED, starting with the network’s coverage of the Rolex 24 at Daytona on Jan. 26 at 3p. Joining Varsha in the booth will be Brian Till handling play-by-play, Calvin Fish, Dorsey Schroeder and Tommy Kendall as analysts as well as Justin Bell analyst/roving reporter. SPEED.com will stream multiple on-board cameras throughout the entire 24 hours of the competition.

Chicago’s Comcast SportsNet announced live Opening Ceremonies coverage from the 2013 SoxFest convention, which is being held downtown this weekend.  Starting Friday at 4p, the channel, along with CSNChicago.com will offer viewers the annual convention’s opening ceremonies featuring introductions of current and former White Sox players/coaches/front office executives as well as interviews with White Sox players. Chuck Garfien hosts.

Your work deserves recognition! Now is the time to submit for our 2013 Cynopsis Sports Media Awards. The deadline is February 1 and we want to see your best work from the past year. Don’t let someone else take your trophy! Click here for entry information.

Sponsorship & Promotion

With $23 billion spent on sports events programming last year (accounting for 23% of all ad spend), Nielsen named the top TV advertisers in sports for 2012 (Q4 2011-Q3 2012) in its annual state of the media report. AT&T Wireless led the pack with $342.8M, followed by Bud Light at $213.3M, Verizon Wireless $195.5M, Geico $166.1M, DIRECTV $157.8M, Sprint Wireless $146.4M, McDonalds $134.5M, Chevrolet Silverado $126.1M, Subway $114.3M and Visa $99.1M.

The NCAA is entering a partnership with Buffalo Wild Wings that makes the company the “Official Hangout of March Madness” and will include marketing, media and activation rights related to all 89 NCAA championships through 2016. The sponsorship was sold through CBS Sports and Turner Sports, and includes media rights that will increase Buffalo Wild Wings game-day broadcast presence over the next four years.

Coke revealed a teaser video for its Super Bowl campaign, dubbed Mirage on its Facebook page. The 60-second sport shows three teams (the badlanders, the cowboys and the showgirls) racing through the desert to get a bottle of Coke. The ad was created by Wieden & Kennedy and will allow consumers to decide which group will get the beverage in an ad that will air during the game.

Golf Digest ranked the top earners in the sport for 2012, accounting for on- as well as off-course earnings. Tiger Woods lead the pack with over $86 million and nearly doubling earnings of second place Phil Mickelson. Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Rory McIlroy rounded out the top five.

Red Bull announced that the Dodge brand has come on board as a presenting partner for the Red Bull Signature Series, alongside returning partners Nike and Casio G’Z. The series debuted last year with over 6 million average viewers per quarter, and will kick off season 2 with 23 shows on NBC beginning January 26 with Red Bull Crashed Ice.

Digital Fields

Monumental Sports and Entertainment Chairman Ted Leonsis confirmed reports that his company will launch a digital network this week in Monumental Network. The platform will feature programming related to the teams that include the Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics. “We have a team of execs, producers, and journalists busy working on the first pass of this network,” Leonsis wrote on his blog. “We are creating original content  lots of new videos, and we will distribute the network far and wide, on the net and via syndication.”

Univision Deportes is bringing Murcielagos F.C. to the US for the first time. The Mexican professional soccer team is the only club in the world to allow its fans to “dictate and modify strategic decisions that are implemented during each match.” Decisions are made by allowing fans to vote in online in real-time online, making it the first team of its kind managed primarily by fans. U.S. soccer fans will be able to participate by watching matches on Univision Deportes Network, and by registering as a manager on the team’s interactive platform. First game takes place on Feb. 1 at 9p.

Tennis Channel is now utilizing Broadway System’s software platform to manage ad sales, traffic and programming at its headquarters in Santa Monica, according to TV Technology.

The Main Event

Bruins/Rangers on NBC Sports Network at 7:30p.
