As expected, the FCC granted approval of the Comcast/NBC Universal merger with certain conditions attached, clearing the way for the nation’s largest cable MSO to become the majority shareholder in a company that owns a broadcast network, a slew of cable channels and the Universal movie studio. Comcast will be required to provide non-discriminatory prices to other multichannel and online distributors, to promise to follow the FCC’s new net neutrality rules, not restrict online distribution of its own video content to rivals, as well as to not disadvantage rival online video distribution through its broadband internet access services and/or set-top boxes (i.e. enable cord-cutting). The FCC also specifically mentioned Hulu, requiring Comcast not to exercise “corporate control” over the joint venture. Democrat Michael J. Copps, the commission’s sole dissenting vote, warned that the deal would lead to higher cable and internet access bills and ultimately fewer choices for consumers.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Over-the-top set-top maker Roku announced a distribution deal with its first cable network – emerging lifestyle network of the well-heeled, WealthTV. While WealthTV is in a limited number of multichannel homes (Charter and Verizon are its biggest distributors,) the deal is groundbreaking in that it’s the first to erode the exclusivity enjoyed by cable and satellite operators. A version of the linear channel and a selection of VOD programming will be available on a la carte basis for $2.99/month.
 
The cable industry’s VOD distributor iN Demand and its digital agency Triad Digital Media put together a new platform on PizzaHut.com to make movie trailers, video clips and movie trivia available to users while they’re waiting for their pizzas to arrive. The integration will promote current titles available for rental on demand.

 
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Video search engine blinkx announced an arrangement with TVGuide Network to index its video content, including a selection of exclusive interviews, sneak peeks and breaking news. blinkx will place contextually relevant ads against the videos and share resulting advertising revenue with TV Guide.
 
Digital Marketing firm Ybrant Digital, owner of search portal Lycos, raised $48 million in financing led by Oak India Investments, with existing investors Asia Pacific Capital and ICICI Bank also participating.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Online ad start-up AdGenesis announced an opt-in video campaign with Parade magazine to mine purchasing intent information from willing participants. The idea is to cut down on blind spam by matching consumers’ interests with relevant branding, reward offers or calls to action. Users who sign up for Parade Video Rewards enter in their info then receive video ads from participating advertisers in their email box that correspond with their interests.
 
Digital audio ad network TargetSpot announced it will begin selling in-stream audio ads for CBS Radio stations available on the Radio.com, AOL Radio, and Yahoo! Music mobile apps. TargetSpot will also deliver audio ads to CBS Radio stations available on the Radio.com iPad app.
 
CBS Interactive Music Group
struck a partnership with online music platform ToneFuse, purveyor of the “flextitial” takeover ad unit, to rep advertising sales of their worldwide inventory. CBS Interactive Music Group’s local and national sales force, as well as its sellers representing Last.fm in the UK and Germany, will be able to target advertiser’s video campaigns across the more than 100 websites ToneFuse Music represents.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
The now Steve Jobless Apple set another revenue record during Q4 of 2010, reporting a record $26.7 billion thanks to phenomenal holiday iPad and iPhone sales. The company sold 16.2 million iPhones, 19.5 million iPods, 4.1 million Mac computers and 7.3 million iPads during the quarter – the latter equal to the total of the previous two quarters combined. Shares of Apple closed down by 2% on the day, however, as the market reacted to the news of Jobs’ third leave of absence.
 
Adobe has acquired privately held Demdex for on undisclosed amount, a company that culls behavioral data on behalf of third-party sites and advertisers and stores them for future segmenting. The technology will be added to Adobe’s Omniture optimization service.
 
Casual games company Oberon Media struck a global partnership with PC maker Lenovo to pre-install games and game solutions on PCs and other devices. Lenovo customers will gain access to a range of casual, core, MMO and fantasy sports games. Oberon has also agreed to help with game acquisition and licensing of game content going forward, including acquisitions from developers such as I-play, PopCap and Bigpoint.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Brick-and-mortar video outlets are no longer the most popular way to rent videos. Rental DVDs and Blu-rays distributed via kiosks such as Redbox exceeded those rented from retail outlets for the first time during Q3 of 2010, according to NPD Group‘s VideoWatch service. Video outlets such as bankrupt chains Hollywood Video and Blockbuster saw their market share decline by 13% while kiosks’ share increased by 10% year-over-year.
 
Meanwhile the market for tablet devices and eReaders increased by 45% during Q3 of 2010, led by global demand of Apple’s fast-selling iPad, according to IDC‘s new Tablet and eReader tracker service. Apple shipped nearly 4.2 million iPads during the quarter, capturing an astounding 87% of the market, while Amazon shipped 1.1 million Kindles, good enough for a 41.5% share of the global eReader market. Sales of both categories – stoked by new models such as Motorola’s Xoom – are expected to ramp up quickly, with 44.6 million tablets expected to ship in 2011, (40% in the U.S.) and another 70.8 million units in 2012. Demand for eReaders also looks healthy with 14.7 million units expected to ship in 2011 and 16.6 million expected in 2012.

iPad and Tivo users will be happy to learn there is now a companion app for Tivo’s new Premiere DVR that allows you to view recorded programming on one side of the split screen and browse for new content, view programming guides, search for actors and directors and schedule recordings on the other without interrupting what you’re watching.
 
Mobile services company Vringo has launched a new mobile music video remix platform with an app built around the catalog of Nappy Boy Entertainment artist T-Pain, whose paid iPhone app was downloaded 300k times during its first three weeks of release last fall. Users can break down pieces of audio and video content to create their own customized mixes to share on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. Vringo will begin by launching a $2.99 Android app with an iPhone version to follow shortly.

Onetime AOL Chairman and CEO Randy Falco, who is better known as former President of the NBCU Television Group, will return to his TV roots at Univision to take over as EVP and COO of the company.
 
Clearwire
announced the election of John W. Stanton as Chairman of the company’s board of directors, replacing founder Craig McCaw, who resigned at the end of last year. John, who served as Chairman and CEO of Western Wireless Corp. until it was acquired by ALLTEL, has sat on the Clearwire board as a Director since Nov. 2008.
 
TouchTunes Interactive Networks
has tapped Heineken USA CMO Christian McMahan to serve as Chief Marketing Officer, to be based in New York. He is charged with leading marketing efforts for the company’s network of digital jukebox and video screens.
 
CraveOnline has hired Michael Giles as Director of Canadian Sales, its first sales person to be stationed north of the border.
 

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
One thing the internet excels at is organizing participants around causes. (A new Pew Internet & American Life study found that internet and social networking users are more likely to join groups and become active in causes because of the platforms’ ability to have an impact.) Video content makes the pitch even more compelling. The United Nations has partnered with Vimeo and more than 60 non-profits to launch One Day on Earth, a comprehensive geo-targeted archive of life on the planet on October 10, 2010 (10/10/10) with an emphasis on countries impacted by poverty and scarce media access. Searchable by topic, location, keyword and popularity, the archive allows interaction with participating filmmakers via its social networking platform, powered by Ning. There’s also a pass-it-along component; those who contribute media to the project will have access to download all One Day on Earth footage for non-commercial use (with credit).
