Good morning, it’s Wednesday, January 16, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Steve Jobs wowed the faithful at Macworld when he unveiled the ultra thin MacBook Air. But 20th Century Fox CEO Jim Gianopulos also upped his street cred among the digital crowd when he joined Jobs on stage to discuss a new DVD copy service now available for Fox titles on iTunes. The deal will allow customers to copy newly-purchased DVDs to their iTunes library. Jobs also introduced the iTunes Movie Rental service – offering movies from Touchstone, Miramax, LionsGate, Fox, Warner Brothers, Walt Disney, Paramount, Universal and Sony for one time viewing on Apple computers and devices. The rental window will open up 30 days after the DVD release, with prices set at $3.99 for new releases, $2.99 for older titles and a $1 surcharge added for movies in HD. Jobs’ annual address caused such a fervor in the Bay area that users overloaded the popular microblogging service Twitter, which was reportedly down for several hours.
PBS began beta testing a new subscription based online educational service targeting 3 – 6 year old kids. PBS Kids Play will utilize characters from classic PBS shows such as Curious George, Mister Rogers Neighborhood and Bob the Builder to host learning activities that will keep up with each individual user’s progress. The Windows-only service will be available for free during its testing phase and is scheduled to launch later this quarter for a fee of $9.95/month or $79.95/year.
CNNMoney.com launched a redesign emphasizing a new influx of original video content. The company hired a new team of producer/reporters that will shoot, publish and edit 15 or more segments a day focusing on business and financial news.
The new Oprah Winfrey Network venture announced by Discovery and Harpo Productions adds Oprah.com to the 50/50 joint venture. The popular site offers Oprah fans video excerpts, interactive workbooks and other content, attracting an average of 3.6 million unique monthly visitors since September, according to comScore.
Speedtv .com will relaunch its website on Feb. 6, adding more video and editorial content, streamlined navigation, a user generated motor sports database as well as new social networking functions. With the linear networking launching an HD simulcast in Feb., Speedtv will also add a widescreen 1024 x 768 resolution video player to the site.
Hallmark Channel is teaming with mobile entertainment provider Limbo to enhance the premiere of its original movie The Good Witch on Saturday, Jan. 19. Players can register via hallmarkchannel .com to compete for cash and prizes.
VOOM’s Gameplay HD channel is jumping on the competitive gaming trend, televising Electronic Arts’ 2007 EA Sports Madden Challenge. The six-part series kicks off Superbowl weekend on Feb. 2 at 1 pm ET.
Gaining fast on competitors Pandora and Last.fm, social music site Jango.com announced it has attracted more than 1 million listeners who have created over 3 million custom internet radio stations since the company launched publicly 2 months ago. Jango got huge boost from its Jango Jukebox music widget, embeddable on MySpace pages, blogs or other sites.
Video services company Roo Group continued paring down operations – laying off the remainder of the Wurld Media P2P team it acquired last year and shutting down its Business Solutions unit – while announcing a new plan to focus on international IPTV markets.
More good stuff from MacWorld:
- Apple lowered the price of Apple TV from $299 to $229 and introduced new software to allow iTunes movie rentals to be played on the device. 1,000 titles will be available by the end of Feb.
- Time Capsule is a new Wi-Fi base station/backup system that wirelessly backs up all data on Macs running the new Leopard OS. The 500 gig model is $299, a 1 terabyte model runs $499
- iPhone users will receive a free software update including a redesigned maps application, a web clip feature to take excerpts from websites and integration with the upcoming iTunes Movie Rental service.
Paul Allen’s set-top box company Digeo announced it is laying off half of its Kirkland, WA.-based staff in order to concentrate on fewer products. The company will discontinue its Multi-Room HD DMR and Moxi Home Cinema DMR but continue working on the Moxi HD DVR due out later this year. Meanwhile Digeo President and COO Greg Gudorf will replace Mike Fidler as CEO.
The FCC opened up it official investigation into net neutrality violations at Comcast, reports Multichannel News, as promised by Kevin Martin at CES.
Cablevision unveiled a new suite of free online security tools for its Optimum Online customers, offering enhanced protections against viruses, spyware, spam and phishing, as well as additional parental controls and data backup features.
The iTunes store has sold 4 billion songs to date, including 20 million songs this past Christmas Day alone. The store has also sold 125 million TV shows and 7 million movies. iPhone sales totaled 4 million units in the product’s first 200 days.
A total of 1.2 million videos and 26.5 million comments were published to user generated video sites such as YouTube, Metacafe, MySpaceTV and Veoh.com in 2007, according to new “Metadata Metrics” report from AccuStream iMedia Research. The report equated user comments with engagement and ranked MySpaceTV as the most commented upon video site, averaging 36.9 comments per video in ’07. MySpaceTV was followed by Metacafe with 32.3 comments and YouTube with 25.4 comments per posting.
Disney Interactive Studios named Jean-Marcel Nicolai as SVP/Global Production. He will oversee Disney’s worldwide video game production including the company’s five internal development studios, reporting to EVP and GM Graham Hopper in the Glendale, CA headquarters.
Digital video processing firm Imagine Communications named Chris Gordon to Director of Product Management. Chris joins Imagine from EGT, where he was the second employee and founding manager.
The Roo Group hired three new executives as part of a restructuring effort. Sean Coutts will head up Global Network Operations and Product Management. Nigel Regan will join to lead Distribution efforts for the European, Middle Eastern and African (EMEA) zone. Ivan Dario Arias will be responsible for Business Development in Latin America.
Trying to get the jump on what the secretive folks at Apple are up to is practically a cottage industry on the web. There are literally dozens of Mac-centric sites that pour over every syllable uttered from Steve Jobs mouth, looking for clues, strategies and conspiracies. Yesterday was the day they all got to see who was right and who was full of it. Some of the mainstays are AppleInsider, ThinkSecret and MacOSRumors, but these just scratch the surface of this dedicated subculture.
