Cynopsis: DIGITAL
01/11/12
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 11, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.
Comcast is testing out its AnyPlay device, which delivers live television to internet-enabled devices, in the Nashville and Denver markets. The service runs through your home wireless router and Wi-Fi network. The AnyPlay device distributes your linear channel subscription package to the router, which in turn transmits a “secure video signal” to your tablet over the wireless network. “So as long as your tablet is within range of the home wireless router, you can turn it into another television screen,” says Mark Hess, SVP of video product development, in the blog post announcing the trial. The service is currently available through the Xfinity TV app on the iPad, with support for the Motorola Xoom tablet on the horizon. Available at no additional charge for Xfinity HD Triple Play customers in Nashville and Denver, Hess says more markets will be added “in the coming months.”
Showtime has launched the network’s authentication service for the iPad via the Showtime Anytime app. Showtime subscribers who are also customers of the network’s cable, satellite and telco partners will get free access to more than 400 hours of the network’s programming. As with any authentication service, all that is required is the subscriber’s username and password for his or her respective television provider. Currently, AT&T U-Verse and Verizon FiOS customers have immediate access to the iPad offering, while Comcast customers can access the service via XfinityTV.com (iPad access will be offered soon). Additional MSO partners, and iPhone and Android versions of the app, will be announced in “early 2012.”
Myspace wants in on the social TV business. The fledgling social network has announced that it will seek to provide an over-the-top television service on Panasonic connected HDTVs via a new Myspace TV app. The social app will initially come with music channels. However, Myspace hopes to eventually expand the platform to include full television channels and on-demand programming integrated with the existing social component. A companion app will also be available on tablets and smartphones for second-screen content. The service will launch in the first half of 2012 across Panasonic’s VIERA Connect platform.
Google is merging Search with Google+, and calling it “Search plus Your World.” It’s a new integration between the two services from the company, which will roll out to all U.S. users this week. It will bring content published on the company’s social network to its regular search results. In addition, relevant Google+ profiles, whether they are of brands or influential individuals, will be populated at the top right of the results page, which up until now was digital real-estate reserved for advertisements. The search box also gets a slight uplift as Google will now auto-complete Google+ usernames of friends and pages already in the searcher’s network. And finally, Google will allow users to flip between this heavily personalized version of Google Search and the classic version via a toggle switch. If you want to fully opt out of this integration, you can do so on Google’s search settings page.
Luxembourg-based Synergiums is introducing software called Vodis, a Siri-like voice- and text-recognition technology intended to help users search for and purchase movies and TV shows with more ease. Geared towards multi-screen and connected TV platforms, Vodis has been tested out with European multiplatform services provider, Netgem, and is in talks for a consumer rollout in some European markets, as well as integration with several international consumer electronics and VoIP providers. In addition, Vodis has been selected for an accelerator established by professional services company PwC and Silicon Valley-based accelerator Plug and Play. This program is designed to connect European companies with venture capital funding from Silicon Valley. Plug and Play’s accelerator currently houses 330 start-ups from all over the world.
Eyeview, a provider of personalized video advertising technology, has closed a $5.2 million Series B round of financing, led by new investor Nauta Capital. Based out of NYC, Eyeview’s technology enables brands to alter video creative in real-time in order to build a more effective, personalized ad viewing experience. As part of the funding, Dominic Endicott, general partner at Nauta Capital, will join Eyeview’s board. Nauta Capital will also lend a hand in Eyeview’s mobile expansion and European development initiatives. Existing investors include Gemini Israel Funds, Lightspeed Ventures and Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s Innovation Endeavors.
Kickstarter has released its 2011 Year in Review, and if you’re a fan of the crowd-funding platform, the numbers are good. Kickstarter donors pledged over $99.3 million in 2011, jumping from $27.6 million in 2010. Of note, Film & Video remained the largest category in terms of total pledge amount as backers pledged a little under $32.5 million in 2011. The project success rate (Kickstarter only hands out the funds if the project meets its stated funding goals), however, remained just about the same as it only rose from 43% in 2010 to 46% in 2011. Video also played an integral role in funding as the site indicates that 80% of projects launched with a project video, up from 69% in 2010.
Google’s Android has supplanted Apple’s iOS in Chitika’s ad impressions rankings from November to December 2011. In November, iOS accounted for 51.7% of ad traffic on Chitika’s online advertising network, while Android was responsible for 46.1%. This changed the following month when Android claimed a 51.6% share of Chitika’s traffic as iOS fell to 46.5%. Chitika attributes the swap in the rankings to a combination of Android’s “open nature” and availability on a large number of mobile devices from a multitude of manufacturers. In addition, 3.7 million Android devices were activated on December 24and 25 alone (according to a tweet cited by Chitika from Google SVP Andy Rubin).
Civolution has integrated its SyncNow automatic content recognition (ACR) technology with social TV platform ConnecTV. The integration, which will be demonstrated at the 2012 International CES, will enable customers to automatically synchronize the TV program they are watching with relevant second-screen content for their tablet, laptop or home computer. Civolution’s audio watermarking technology currently powers second-screen synchronization for tablet and smartphone apps of The X Factor in Italy and The Voice of Holland. ConnecTV currently provides second-screen experiences for programs on more than 250 networks nationwide and will soon be rolling out on regional sports networks, as well as on 201 local ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX and CW affiliates from its broadcast partners, which include Gannett, Cox, Hearst and Meredith.
The sixth edition of Deloitte‘s State of the Media Democracy survey indicates that 9% of people in the U.S. have already cut the cord, and 11% are considering doing so due to the availability of alternate methods for watching television content. In relation, the report finds that video streaming is rising as the percentage of Americans who have streamed a movie has jumped from 28% in 2009 to 42% today. Other interesting data from the report includes:
- 14% of Americans cite streaming to their computer or TV as their favorite method of watching a movie, up from 4% in 2009.
- An additional 15% of respondents say they will most likely watch movies, TV shows and videos via “digital sources” in the near future.
- Only 44% of those surveyed have DVRs, which the report notes is an opportunity for television providers to reach more Americans.
Microsoft is the most visited retail and consumer electronic brand online as its websites attracted nearly 94 million unique U.S. visitors in September 2011, according to Nielsen‘s latest State of the Media: Consumer Usage Report. In comparison, Apple’s websites only generated 68.7 million unique U.S. visitors over the same month. However, consumers spent the most time on Apple’s websites, averaging one hour and two minutes per person (versus an average of 42 minutes on Microsoft’s sites). Amazon is the top mass merchandiser brand as 72 million unique users visited the online shopping site in September 2011, spending an average of 29 minutes per person. Walmart came in second with 34.5 million visitors and an average of 13 minutes per person.
The Simple.TV box is a Slingbox-type device that will allow users to record and stream local broadcast channels and basic cable channels to any mobile, tablet or connected device that supports the box, reports GigaOM. The set-top box does not provide any storage space. Instead, users will be able to connect a USB drive or storage network to the box in order to record programming. At the time of launch, Simple.TV will include support for the iPad, Roku, Boxee and Google TV devices, and will be available for $149.
Legolas Media has hired Tami Kelly to be Director of Account Management. Kelly will be in charge of the company’s expanding client relations team, which includes leading brands and ad agencies such as Horizon Media. Legolas Media’s audience “futures” marketplace helps publishers sell guaranteed inventory based on the likelihood of targeted audiences visiting the website. Kelly holds over a decade of experience in digital advertising and was most recently account management director for east regional sales at AOL.
A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE
Cynopsis | Sports
Dedicated to the business of TV Sports and written by Managing Editor Chris Pursell.
It covers industry news, sponsorship & promotion, the digital field and more.
You might have missed it, but the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show is taking place in Las Vegas this week. In fact, we’re already in its second day. Kidding aside, the four-day event is a madhouse devoted to serve the inner geek in all of us (or, at least, me). However, there is a bevy of information coming out of the trade show every year, and sometimes it can feel difficult to stay abreast of all the news, previews and all-around smorgasbord of information. With that in mind, online video site Dailymotion is providing video coverage of the event. The site has already lined up interviews with companies like Sony, Microsoft, Samsung, Nintendo, LG, Panasonic and more. So check it out, and get a good look at what everyone is to be talking about this week.
