The MPAA is drawling a line in the cloud so to speak with a new lawsuit aimed at online file-based storage service Hotfile, which stores movies and TV shows for active freeloaders, I mean downloaders of pirated material. The company, which charges a monthly fee for its services, has grown to become one of the top 100 trafficked sites in the world, according to the MPAA and is responsible for profiting off the theft of intellectual property from thousands of member companies. “Hotfile’s business model encourages and incentivizes users to upload files containing illegal copies of motion pictures and TV shows to its servers and to third-party sites, so unlimited users can download the stolen content – in many cases tens of thousands of times,” notes the MPAA in its release.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Ex-MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann is joining San Francisco-based multiplatform broadcaster Current TV. Keith will be known as Chief News Officer, host his own nightly primetime show, receive a piece of the company and get a commitment from Current TV co-founder Joel Hyatt to see significant added content developed around his show for digital platforms. 
 
USA Network’s Character Approved blog is featuring posts celebrating prominent African Americans this week in honor of Black History Month. Today’s entry profiles the hip-hop band The Roots, better known as the house band on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

 
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Online/mobile couponing site Groupon responded to outrage over its Super Bowl ads, reminding users that its roots are in social activism. Ads like this one poking fun at Tibet’s quest for independence, created by Portland, OR-based Crispin Porter & Bogusky, were actually meant to make fun of Groupon itself, claims company founder Andrew Mason, who also founded online fundraising platform The Point on which Groupon was based.
 
JAGTAG founders Dudley Fitzpatrick and Jason Snyder announced the launch of Duomentis, a new marketing firm pledging to help marketers identify, develop and take to market technology-enabled new business methods, products, services and sustainable marketing properties.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Online messaging platform and network operator Meebo has acquired psychographic ad targeting start-up Mindset Media for an undisclosed amount. Mindset’s technology helps to match ads with users who have demonstrated an interest in a certain product based on personality profiles and psychographic tendencies – (a pie-in-the-sky method, some might say, but one that has generated interest among forward-thinking agencies.) Meebo dips into the $25 million it received from its latest funding round to make the acquisition.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Taiwanese smartphone designer HTC made strategic investments in cloud-based gaming service OnLive and acquired London-based mobile multimedia company Saffron Digital, according to reports. HTC is sinking $40 million into OnLive to help expand its wireless gaming division and takes over Saffron Digital for a reported $48 million with hopes of delivering a compelling multimedia video experience on its devices.
 
Rovi Corp.
has expanded its home entertainment Connected Platform technology to include pre-ported compatibility with Android devices. Music, photo and video files stored on Android devices powered by the platform will be capable of sharing media over consumers’ home networks for streamed playback on digital TVs, set-top boxes, digital video recorders, Windows 7 PCs and network-attached storage devices.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
E-commerce, social networking usage, online video viewing and online and mobile advertising all increased dramatically in 2010 after 2 years of depressed spending, according to ComScore‘s annual whitepaper, U.S. Digital Year in Review. The year saw Facebook emerge as the #4 most visited web property, increasing its U.S. audience by 38% to 153.9 million visitors as of Dec. 2010.

  • Total U.S. e-commerce spending reached $227.6 billion in 2010, up 9% y/y with travel spending increasing by 6% to $85.2 billion and retail spending up 10% to $142.5 billion
  • 9 out of every 10 U.S. internet users now visit a social networking site in a month, averaging more than 4 hours/month. Nearly 1 out of every 8 minutes online is spent on Facebook
  • The U.S. core search market grew 12% overall in 2010, driven by a 4% increase in unique searchers and an 8% increase in the number of search queries per searcher
  • U.S. Internet users received a total of 4.9 trillion display ads in 2010 with display ad impressions growing 23% in Dec. 2010 vs. Dec. 2009. Social networking sites now account for more than one-third of all display ad impressions
  • The average American spent more than 14 hours watching online video in Dec. 2010 (up 12% y/y) and streamed a record 201 videos (an 8% increase)

Usage of Microsoft’s Bing search engine continues to slowly cut into Google’s commanding market share, according to panel-based web analytics firm Experian Hitwise, with Bing receiving 27.44% of web searches in Jan. when combined with partner Yahoo (up 6%), compared to 67.95% for Google (a decline of 2% from Dec. 2010.) Hitwise says Bing and Yahoo! Search achieved the highest success rates in Jan. – more than 81% of searches executed by Bing or Yahoo resulted in a visit to a website, compare to a success rate of 65%.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Smartphone owners love their touchscreens so why not give them two to multitask with? Sprint Nextel unveiled a new handset based on the Android 2.2 operating system dubbed the Echo. Made by Kyocera, which acquired Sanyo last year, the phone features two 3.5-inch touchscreens that can be displayed simultaneously or stacked on top each other. (The “tablet mode” enables one application to be spread across both displays for a full 4.7-inch viewing area.) The device also features a 5 megapixel camera, a 1GHz processor and comes with a second battery that can be connected using a micro USB cable – included in the $200 after-rebate, two-year contract price.
 
Mobile video and photo sharing service Thwapr launched a new iPhone app that allows users to geotag and share photos and videos via Facebook and Twitter. The app pulls contacts from the phone’s address book and allows comments to be added to create running conversations about a shared photo or video.

New York-based online media verification firm DoubleVerify named Yoav Millet as CFO and Mark Pearlstein as VP/Business Development. Yoav joins DoubleVerify from On-Net Surveillance Systems where he served as COO and CFO and Mark joins from Ringleader Digital, where he was SVP/Biz Dev and Sales.
 
Recorded music supplier Drew’s Entertainment has hired George Davis as Director of Creative Licensing and Digital Strategy. George will oversee master-use licensing of the company’s catalog for synchronization purposes, and will also handle catalog management and acquisitions, digital music sales and marketing efforts.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
For the second year in a row, The Recording Academy is turning to the official Grammy site to stream a number of events leading up to the awards from Friday night, including the Social Media Rock Star Summit, the MusiCares Person of the Year Tribute to Barbra Streisand and the pre-Grammy Gala that will honor David Geffen. The Academy has partnered with some well known companies to expand its live streaming efforts, including AEG Digital Media to handle the live streaming, which will include multiple viewing options and a “dual screen” experience. (Viewers will be able to check out behind-the-scenes footage, red carpet coverage, press room Q&As, etc. while they watch the CBS telecast.) Akamai will distribute both the live and on demand video globally and LiveU will provide 4G LTE-compatible mobile backpacks to power the actual broadcasts. The Grammy’s YouTube page will also again feature videos from the three-days leading up to the awards.
