Good morning, it’s Wednesday, February 6, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Super Tuesday proved to be another watershed event in New Media with news outlets pulling out all the stops to outdo each other in the digital space. MTV’s Choose or Lose site harnessed citizen journalists, deploying “Street Teams” of bloggers who posted video clips throughout the night by using Flixwagon.com software and Nokia N95 multimedia mobile devices. WashingtonPost.com teamed with Newsweek to stream live video coverage, trying to beat the TV networks at their own game. MSNBC.com offered bloggers embeddable political widgets. YouTube borrowed tools from Google Maps. And Barack Obama got a last minute boost from “Yes We Can,’ a music video featuring an all-star cast putting the Senator’s can-do rhetoric to song.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
NBC Digital Entertainment
has developed a new online property around the latest Candace Bushnell TV adaptation Lipstick Jungle, premiering tomorrow night at 10 pm ET/PT. Bonfire Magazine, produced with NBCU subsidiary iVillage.com and sponsored by Maybelline NY, presents exclusive content from the show in the context of a fashion magazine – offering users practical tips and advice updated weekly.
 
Turner Entertainment Holdings Asia Pacific
will utilize the social media services of Outblaze to build an interactive community around Cartoon Network’s brands in Asia. Planned properties include blogs, games, instant messaging and a full suite of video creation, editing and sharing capabilities.


~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

Yet another online comedic video site is launching today called The Independent Comedy Network, developing original improvisational comedy series to stream with ads and syndicate to other entertainment portals including MySpace.tv, YouTube, Joost, Vuze, Blip.tv and iTunes. CEO Marc Campbell developed the site with his cohorts at The Westside Eclectic comedy theater in Santa Monica, which he founded in 2005.
 
BornReady.TV is the online answer to Basketball Diaries, profiling high school basketball phenom Lance Stephenson as he makes his way through his sophomore and junior years at Coney Island’s Lincoln High School. The webisode series is a collaboration between producers Fader Films, Born & Bread and Den of Thieves.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
 

Comcast’s broadband video management firm thePlatform unveiled a comprehensive partner program offering software development kits, ad campaign management systems, engineering support and development sandboxes compatible with many of new media’s top brands. The company’s “Framework” program has already adopted integrated solutions for dozens of players including Akamai and Cisco on the content delivery side, Apple and Adobe in video playback and MSN Video, MobiTV, Yahoo and YouTube among content syndicators. 
 
AOL acquired UK-based affiliate marketing network Buy.at, which drives online sales by offering pay-per-interaction alternatives to traditional impression or pay-per-click campaigns through environments such as social networks.

Apple unveiled a new $499 iPhone model, doubling storage capacity to 16GB. No release date was given on the upcoming model that will work on AT&T’s 3G network. Apple says it has sold 4 million iPhones to date.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
 

News Corp. division Fox Interactive Media reported $223 million in total revenues for FYQ2 2008, (including guaranteed revenues for MySpace of $62 million from Google,) an increase of 87% from the previous year. News Corp. COO Peter Chernin named FIM’s targeted advertising initiatives as a contributing factor and said he looked forward to the ability of MySpace’s involvement with the Open Social initiative to drive increased sales and innovation. MySpace accounts for “most” of FIM’s revenues, according to CFO David F. DeVoe, with domestic revenue accounting for about 85%.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~
 

The U.S. podcasting audience reached 18.5 million in 2007, according to eMarketer and was projected to top 65 million by 2012 with 25 million listeners downloading one or more podcasts a week. Ad spending on podcasts in the U.S. is also expected to creep up, from $165 million in 2007 to $435 million in 2012.
 
It’s the economy, stupid. That’s what women are saying will be the top issue in this year’s election according to the “How She Will Decide” forum hosted by iVillage and AARP on Feb. 1. iVillage also fielded a Roper poll in January which found economic concerns to be top of mind among over half of women surveyed, followed by the Iraq war (15%) and homeland security (12%).  
 
Google will fall behind Microsoft and Yahoo if the companies were to merge, according to the latest data from ComScore. Google Sites saw nearly 588 million unique visitors over the age of 14 worldwide in December, according to comScore’s qSearch, compared to a combined audience of 665 million for Yahoo and Microsoft sites. 
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Former Chief Activation Officer Tim Spengler was promoted to President of Initiative USA, reporting to Richard Beaven, Worldwide CEO. His colleague Alan Cohen was upped to President, Initiative West and Worldwide Innovation. Alan will report to Tim and  President of sister IPG agency Universal McCann, Mary Gerzema.
 
Bravo Media
and Oxygen Media tapped Tony Cardinale for the newly created position of SVP/Research & Strategic Insights. He will continue to report to Lauren Zalaznick, President, Bravo Media and Oxygen Media and Sari DeCesare, SVP/TV Network & Cable Audience Research, NBC Universal.
 
Digital partnership veteran Chris Rovtar joined Saffron Digital as EVP/North America. He will helm Saffron’s North American operations, seeking strategic alliances with media companies, carriers and content creators.
 
The Travel Ad Network expanded its vertical online ad network oversees, adding offices in Canada and the U.K. The Canadian operation will be run out of TAN’s new Montreal office by Tom Dunning, and the company has hired Ray Witter to run its London office.
 
Faith & Values Media
has named Allen Krauskopf to the newly created position of VP/Internet Services. He will be based in the company’s New York City headquarters.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
 

Manly, silly, s*xy men’s site Break.com is spreading its wings with three new properties built around broad appealing concepts. (No pun intended.) Chickipedia is a user generated wiki site dedicated to – you guessed it – hot chicks. Holy Taco is a blog highlighting gear, gossip and babes. Cage Potato is a destination for the growing population of mixed martial arts fans. The Break Ad Network empire now includes 12 sites, which reach an aggregate audience of about 35 million men worldwide each month, according to CEO Keith Richman. Break.com alone attracts 18 million uniques, who average 7.5 minutes per visit. Check out the most viewed videos section on most video sharing sites and there’s one common denominator. Like in the early days of pay television, scantily clad women sell on the internet and the Break network’s got ‘em. 
 
Clarification: The ESPN360.com broadband service is not a traditional online subscription service. It relies instead on fees paid by more than 20 nationwide ISPs including AT&T, Charter, Insight and Verizon, which in turn offer the service free to their subscribers.
