Cynopsis: DIGITAL
02.27.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 27, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

How do you combat internet piracy? You give consumers six strikes — sort of. The Center for Copyright Information, a joint venture of entertainment copyright holders and internet service providers (ISPs), has launched the Copyright Alert System (CAS). Here’s how it works: A content owner/copyright holder will notify a participating ISP if they believe a consumer has been illegally downloading digital content like a movie or TV show. The ISP will then send a notice to the allegedly guilty party. Consumers get six strikes. Potential actions from an ISP include temporary reductions in internet speed and redirecting consumers to a landing page until they contact the ISP and/or complete a copyright education program.

Exclusive: To support its new original animated series, Out There, IFC has created a digital yearbook, available via HolfordYearBook.com. Developed by IFC, series creator Ryan Quincy, and interactive agency Secret Location, the yearbook introduces users to the fictitious Holford High School and the characters that populate the series. The site offers an array of video content, including full episodes, trailers, and clips. Quincy also created custom content exclusively for the site, including yearbook-like group photos and “ads” for the businesses featured in the series. All content is shareable and optimized to be accessible online and on mobile devices. Out There airs on Fridays at 10:30pm ET/PT.

The Paley Center for Media is partnering with Livestream for the second year to live stream the 30th Annual PaleyFest, which takes place March 1-15, 2013, at the Saban Theatre in LA. Shows that will have panels include Revolution, Once Upon a Time, Community, The Newsroom, The New Normal, Parenthood, The Mindy Project, Nashville, Arrow, Dallas, New Girl, 2 Broke Girls, and American Horror Story: Asylum.

Despite the recent hype surrounding House of Cards, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings took time at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference to say that original production is not the “center” of the company — at least not yet. It might be a different story over the next five or 10 years, though, as Netflix tries to develop content franchises. This might include House of Cards: Hastings said the second season of the show will help determine whether it will continue. He also noted that the upcoming season of Arrested Development will be a one-off affair, rather than a batch of seasons.

Acorn TV has made The Syndicate, a BBC drama about five supermarket owners who enter into a syndicate and win the lottery, available for streaming in the US. Late last month, Deadline reported that ABC had ordered a pilot for a US version of the show (Lucky 7), written by David Zabel and Jason Richman. The British SVOD service is also streaming the 1980s classic The Scarlet Pimpernel, starring Anthony Andrews, Jane Seymour, and Sir Ian McKellen.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and its annual NAB Show has launched Sprockit, a new program that will give 10 market-ready start-ups the opportunity to present their product or service to media and entertainment executives, and potential funders who are attending its weeklong event in April. The winners will be selected by a panel that includes Angel Capital Association, Dell Founders Club, NAB Show, National Venture Capital Association, The Paley Center, and Springboard Enterprises. The NAB Show will be held April 6-11, 2013 in Las Vegas.

Last year, the IAB launched its Digital Media Sales Certification program to serve as a benchmark for sales professionals to prove their knowledge of and expertise in the interactive ad ecosystem. At this past weekend’s IAB Annual Leadership Meeting, it was announced that 24/7 Media, About.com, and Triad Retail Media, will support the program by formally committing to a sales hiring preference for those who have taken and passed the exam.

DoubleVerify has received certification from the UK’s Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) for its content verification (CV) solution, BrandShield. BrandShield is a real-time blocking solution that helps advertisers ensure that their ads are only associated with content that they approve of at both the site and page level. With ABC approval, it’s another step for DoubleVerify in establishing that its ad measurement and verification tools meet global standards.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Online video streaming and tech start-up Ooyala has released its 2012 Year-End Video Index Report, which captured the online viewing habits of 200 million unique viewers in more than 130 countries. Here are some of the top-line findings:

  • Time spent streaming video on tablet and mobile devices doubled in 2012.
  • In Q4 2012, viewers watched live video content 18 times longer on desktops, five times longer on tablets, and four times longer on mobile devices versus VOD content on those same devices.
  • Branded video views spiked during the holidays, rising 91% from the start of Q4 to their peak in mid-December.
  • iPhone users watched twice as much video on their phones than Android users did in 2012.
  • On tablets, about a third of premium videos viewed in Q4 2012 were longer than an hour.

A new Nielsen study examined mobile consumer behavior and device preference and usage in the US, UK, Australia, Brazil, China, India, Italy, Russia, South Korea, and Turkey to determine how mobile usage differs by market and demographic groups. It discovered:

  • In developed markets like the US, UK, and South Korea, smartphone owners now make up the majority of mobile consumers (53%, 61%, and 67%, respectively). In emerging economies like India and Turkey, mobile phone users still prefer feature phones (80% and 61%, respectively).
  • Smartphone owners in the US are most likely to watch video (65% of device owners). Other markets with strong mobile video consumption include China (56%) and Brazil (49%).
  • Social networking app usage is strong across the board, with the US (85% of device owners), Brazil (67%), and China (60%) leading the pack.

~ THE DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY ~

NBCUniversal’s Integrated Media group has premiered Indie Women, a new documentary from the division’s in-house production arm, Curve Films. The 10-minute film spotlights a consumer segment: women who are above the average age of marriage (27), are unmarried, and have no kids and aren’t living with a partner. This consumer segment is 31 million strong and spends $1 trillion each year and over-index on things like television watching and social media influence. The film features NBCUniversal personalities such as Megan Hilty (Smash) and SuChin Pak (DailyCandy), as well as experts like Toby Barlow (JWT), Claudia Cahill (OMD), and NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg. Indie Women is the second documentary of this type released by Integrated Media, following last year’s film on Generation Y, Y Now.
