Over 93% of the Writer’s Guild officially voted to ratify the new labor agreement struck 100 days after the strike began, the first to give WGA members a taste of digital revenues. The next battle for the WGA, SAG and the Teamsters Union is over cable and syndication licensing fees. California State Senator Shelia Kuehl (D-Los Angeles) introduced a bill in Sacramento this week, which sets out to end the practice of “underselling” TV series or movies (when networks give sweetheart deals to their affiliated companies.)

ESPN will expand its coverage of The Masters in April on ESPN.com, ESPN360.com and masters.org to include live streaming of the linear channel’s Wednesday – Friday coverage on the broadband channel and live streaming of “Amen’s Corner” on ESPN.com. Other multiplatform features include:

  • ESPN360.com: video coverage of Par 3 contest on April 9, 3-5 pm ET
  • ESPN.com: live “look ins” of the action, video highlights, analysis, live blogging and chats, WAP-compatible scores and information
  • ESPN Arcade: a putting game simulating the greens of the 11th, 12th and 13th holes
  • ESPN Widgets: embeddable application providing scoring, news and video highlights

Gannett Co. struck a partnership with family organization software provider cozi.com to offer local stations and newspaper sites services to help families manage their busy schedules. Cozi applications include a central family calendar, shopping and to-do lists and various communication tools.
 
NBC Sports selected Crisp Wireless to build, manage and serve ads to the WAP-based mobile.nbcsports.com.
 
Washingtonpost.com struck a content partnership to expand its Business section with content from Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and Kiplinger.com.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

Yahoo unveiled a new Digg-like tool called Yahoo Buzz that allows users to vote on which articles and videos get to be posted on the portal’s highly trafficked front page. Articles will be sources from major media partners such as Hearst Magazines Digital Media. The site also tracks top Yahoo searches like yesterday’s #1 subject Gary Busey, who took Jennifer Garner by surprise on the Red Carpet during live interview with E!s Ryan Seacrest.
 
Celeb blogger Perez Hilton is talks with Warner Bros. Records to become a music talent agent for the label, according to The New York Times.
 
Advertising.com veterans Scott Ferber and Mollie Spilman received $15 million in series A funding led by New Enterprises Assoc. and Valhalla Partners for the launch of TidalTV. The upcoming a web-based television service will feature interactive ad-supported, professionally produced television programming.


~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
 

It turns out there was an interesting story behind YouTube‘s outage over the weekend. Pakistan officials had requested that an anti-Muslim film clip from Dutch lawmaker/filmmaker Geert Wilders’ upcoming expose on the Koran to be removed from the local version of the site, for fear of it inciting violence. Pakistan Telecom implemented the government’s orders and blocked the clip, but an error in PTCL’s “black holing” procedure inadvertently replicated the blocking message across the internet worldwide. Whoops!
 
CBS Corp. chief Les Moonves claimed in a conference call with analysts the writers’ strike actually helped the bottom line by ushering in permanent efficiencies, including slimmed down upfront presentations and the ordering of fewer, cheaper pilots. He also touted new media initiatives, predicting March Madness streaming will earn $21 million in online ad revenue this year, up from $4 million last year.

The IAB and PricewaterhouseCoopers estimated internet advertising revenues will grow to $21.1 billion in 2007, a 25% increase from last year’s total of $16.9 billion.
 
Kids/teens online ad network Go Fish added teen focused, avatar-based social network WeeWorld, increasing its aggregate reach to 18.2 million users, according to comScore figures.

Endemol USA
hired Eric Lavanchy to head a new casual game group as Director of Gaming. Eric will report to Jon Vlassopulos, SVP/Digital Media and Branded Entertainment and will be based at Endemol USA’s headquarters in Los Angeles.
 
CallWave named Richard Roberts as Chief Marketing Officer. He will be based in the company’s Santa Barbara headquarters, reporting to CEO Jeff Cavins.
 
NetShelter Technology Media
upped Todd Carville to SVP/Sales. He will be based in the company’s new San Francisco office.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
 

During a live Town Hall meeting broadcast on UStreamTV founders of the real Digg, Kevin Rose and Jay Adelson, discussed plans to integrate the site’s podcasts section into the main site. Kevin and Jay’s beer-enhanced Diggnation is by far the most popular video podcast on the site, but the move should still help rival producers gain exposure. Other new developments include widget launches on iGoogle, MySpace and Netvibes.
