Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, 24, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

India-based comic book company Amar Chitra Katha (ACK) and Animagic Studios are developing movies based on ACK’s popular Indian mythology stories for air on Cartoon Network India.  The first film, titled Tripura: The Three Cities of Maya, is being designed and directed by Chetan Sharma, co-founder of Animagic Studio and is slated to premiere later this year on Cartoon Network in India.  ACK Media is co-producing the movie with Animagic Studio.  Tripura is a story of Shiva and revolves around an epic battle between good and evil, in this case Devas and Asuras over their kingdom of the three cities of Maya.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group continues to grow its game publishing business with the acquisition of a majority stake in Rocksteady Studios, a privately held developer of teen/adult-aimed interactive entertainment.  Rocksteady developed last years Batman: Arkham Asylum (Teen rated) for Warner Bros., and is currently working on a sequel to the game.  In 2007 Warner Bros. acquired TT Games, developer of the LEGO-based game franchise, and in 2009 purchased Snowblind Studios to develop it’s the Lord of the Rings games franchise, with the first title set for a 2011 release.  Additionally, Warner Bros. recently acquired the primary assets of Midway Games.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Director/writer’s Joel and Ethan Coen’s new movie version of the Western True Grit has found its Mattie Ross in newcomer Hailee Steinfeld (14), per Variety.  The Paramount movie already features an all-star cast of Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin.  Production on True Grit begins month New Mexico, which is slated for release on Christmas Day.  The movie is based on author Charles Portis’ 1968 book True Grit.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon UK and Nick Jr UK unveiled their spring/summer 2010 highlights, which includes the Nickelodeon re-brand launch (e.g. new logo, on-air look, on-air idents) as well as new and returning shows.

  • New shows debuting on Nickelodeon UK from Nickelodeon US are the music-based live action series Big Time Rush and the animated series Fanboy and Chum Chum.  Returning series include the live-action series True Jackson VP with new episodes and a TV movie, as well as new episodes of iCarly, H20, The Troop and SpongeBob SquarePants and Penguins of Madagascar.
  • Nick Jr will premiere its newly commissioned live action, sing-along music preschool series The Bopps, during the channel’s breakfast programming block Wake Up World.  The Bopps is produced by UK-based indie The Little Entertainment Group.  Additionally, Nick Jr will help Dora the Explorer celebrate her 10th birthday with new episodes and specials.  The channel will also debut new episodes of the CGI animated music series The Backyardigans, Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom and Ni Hao, Kai-lan, as well as new episodes of Angelina Ballerina: The Next Steps, Roary the Racing Car, Wonder Pets!, Olivia, Go, Diego, Go and The Fairies (on Nick Jr 2).

New Disney/Pixar Cars Toons short will premiere Friday, March 12 at 8:55p on Disney Channel.   The animated short will also run on Disney XD on Monday, March 29 at 7:23p.  The Cars Toon short is directed by John Lasseter with Rob Gibbs and Victor Navone co-directing, and features music scored by composer BT (The Fast and the Furious)

MTV Networks International signs new broadcast sales for Dora the Explorer including new deals with TSR (a French-language Swiss channel) and TG4 (Ireland).  Acquiring new seasons of Dora are 365 Media (Iceland), TV4 (Sweden) and Ecuavisa (Ecuador).  In other MTVNI broadcast sales, Back at the Barnyard is picked up by MTV Oy (Finland), TV3 (Catalunya, Spain), and TG4 (Ireland).  Additionally, FETV (Panama) picks up episodes of Fairly OddParents.

American Greetings Properties (AGP) signs new Care Bears entertainment deals to bring the property to the UK, Italy, Latin America, Middle East and Canada.  Under the various deals Cartoon Network acquires the rights to broadcast the Care Bears Adventures in Care-a-lot series in both the UK and Italy, with Disney taking the broadcast rights to the same series as well as three new CGI specials for air throughout Latin American and Astral Media’s Playhouse Disney in Canada.  In the Middle East, Prime Pictures picks up the rights to the Care Bears movie Oopsy Does it, as well as the Adventures in Care-a-lot series and three CGI specials, Share Bear Shines, The Giving Festival and Care Bears to the Rescue.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Burger King Corporation teams up again with Summit Entertainment as a sponsor for the third Twilight movie, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, releasing June 30, 2010.  Burger King will support the Eclipse release with promotions that will offer consumers “exclusive access to the property,” no doubt similar to it’s The Twilight Saga: New Moon promotions last fall.

Chapman Entertainment inks a new licensing deal with The Make-Up Factory to create first aid and accessories based on its Fifi and the Flowertots property.  The new line of Fifi and the Flowertots products includes plasters and microwavable wheat filled cushions.  Additionally, development is under way for sun care kits, first aid kits, brushes and mirrors.

This week marks Lionsgate Home Entertainment and LeapFrog Enterprise‘s release of the new preschool-targeted DVD, LeapFrog: Math Adventure to the Moon. The title takes kids/parents on an educational/entertaining mission to the moon where they play games and hear music all while learning early math skills (e.g. counting, sorting and addition), with LeapFrog characters Tad, lily and Edison.

Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) inks licensing deals for two of Nickelodeon’s most popular properties, Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants, in France and the UK.

  • In France Videojet signs on to create an educational Dora the Explorer console game for preschoolers, which will launch in France and Benelux countries for summer 2010.
  • NVCP signs two new pacts in the UK: Little Star Creations will produce kid’s headphones and magnetic height charts for release this spring at retailers including Toys ‘R’ Us.  The deal, which runs through March 2010, follows a similar one for SpongeBob SquarePants; Britepower releases new SpongeBob SquarePants flashlights and bubble makers at retail spring.

STONE SOUP

Disneyland has officially reopened its Captain EO 3D attraction featuring Michael Jackson in the Tomorrowland section of the park.  Originally in operation 1986-97, Captain EO was created by Jackson with George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola and featured a 17-minute 3D film staring Jackson as Captain EO performing two original songs and featuring Anjelica Huston and a group of space characters  not to mention the group of talent behind the scenes.
