Amazon unveiled its long-rumored streaming video service with a library of 5,000 movie and TV library titles from two major studios – Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. – as well as a bakers’ dozen of independent producers including Magnolia Pictures, IFC, PBS, National Geographic and the BBC. Roku set-top owners can start streaming the titles immediately. Amazon’s plan is to use the service as a carrot to entice customers to sign up for its $79/year Amazon Prime shipping service. (Amazon Prime customers, who enjoy free 2-day shipping for any product they buy, also now get unlimited streaming at no extra cost.) While Amazon’s collection pales in comparison to Netflix’s $8/mo. offering, it is a start in its plan to rival Netflix’s dominance of the space.
CBS signed an exclusive 2-year licensing deal with Netflix to make episodes of recent series and classic shows available on its streaming service, beginning in April of this year. Included in the deal are full seasons of Medium, Flashpoint, Frasier, Cheers, the original Hawaii-Five-O and the original Star Trek.
Rogers Media is teaming with NBC Universal’s iVillage.com to launch a Canadian version of the women’s site later this spring. Rogers will independently operate the new iVillage.ca site as well as sell ads to Canadian advertisers across multiple iVillage properties.
This year’s NBA All Star weekend set video streaming records for NBA Digital, delivering nearly 83 million video streams via NBA.com and over 4.5 million votes for the interactive Slam Dunk contest on NBA Mobile. The record video streams included an all-time single-day mark of more than 28 million video streams viewed by fans on Saturday. To date, more than 1.2 billion videos have been viewed on NBA.com this season, more than double last year’s pace.
Developers can look forward to later this spring when Microsoft will release a Software Developers Kit (SDK) that will enable programmers to develop games and applications for Windows 7 PCs around the hot-selling Kinect Xbox 360 controller.
Video entertainment site Dailymotion has agreed to distribute the web series RandomCreepyGuy from RCG Media, purveyors of the “Three Ring Blog” network of sites including the self-explanatory RandomCreepyGuy.com and People of WalMart. New episodes of the 14-part series will premiere exclusively on Dailymotion each Tuesday.
The New York Interconnect, a partnership between Cablevision and Comcast Spotlight, announced it now able to offer interactive advertising requests to some 3.2 million digital subscribers within the New York DMA. Viewers will be able to use their remote to request coupons, brochures or additional info from advertisers. The launch marks the first time an interconnect, which enables media buyers to place ads across multiple MSOs, has offered Request For Information (RFI) capabilities.
Forbes is launching a new ad platform that combines the Forbes Media Network with a new audience segmentation system that blends advertising with content according to user preferences. The Forbes Audience Segmentation Targeting (FAST) technology combines Forbes proprietary data with third party info. to create defined audience segmentations for retargeting across Forbes.com, the Forbes Media Network and the Forbes’ network of business and finance blogs.
Bankrupt rental chain Blockbuster has agreed to be acquired by a group of its debt holders called Cobalt Video Holdco LLC in a deal that could be worth as much as $290 million. The agreement calls for the company to shutter more than 600 of its 3,000 directly owned stores in the U.S. by the end of the month and gives the buyers the option to convert the video-rental chain’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy into a Chapter 7 liquidation.
Citing FCC rules and regulations, a federal judge ordered online broadcaster ivi TV yesterday to stop rebroadcasting signals of local TV stations over the internet, an injunction that will force the start-up to shutter much of its service. A group of major broadcasters and studios teamed up to sue the start-up last year. Ivi TV CEO Todd Weaver claims that the company is in compliance and promises to appeal the ruling.
Online video platform provider Ooyala has struck a partnership with Yahoo! Japan that will see the portal standardize Ooyala’s technology to help broadcasters, publishers, advertisers and content creators optimize their online businesses. With backend support from the Mountain View, CA-based company, Yahoo! Japan will hasten the spread of video content across connected PCs, smartphones, tablets and televisions and act as a sales agent for Ooyala’s technology to third parties. Japan is one of the fastest-growing broadband video markets, with online consumption up to an ave. of 12.5 hours/month per user, according to ComScore and broadband penetration of over 90%.
Evolve Media Corp. has acquired video gaming site PlayStationLifeStyle to add to its GameRevolution gamer destination site, which reaches some 4.5 million monthly uniques.
Univision Interactive Media signed a deal with Mountain View, CA-based Anvato to integrate its online and mobile video platform. Avanto will provide broadcast workflow integration, video management, transcoding, multiplatform syndication and video analytics to the Hispanic broadcaster’s digital division.
News Corp’s gaming-themed IGN Entertainment has signed a deal with video technology company FreeWheel to have it manage its advertising business and monetize its digital video content.
Rumor has it that Apple is set to unveil an update to the iPad at an event on March 2. Look for it to be faster, thinner, lighter and to sport a front-facing camera.

Randall Rothenberg has returned as President and CEO of the Interactive Advertising Bureau, weeks after he was wooed by former Time, Inc. CEO Jack Griffin to serve as EVP and the company’s first Chief Digital Officer. Time, Inc. also announced it will continue its Board-level sponsorship of IAB Mobile Marketing Center of Excellence and will become a charter sponsor of the IAB’s new Ad Lab.
Gary Moore has been named as the first COO of Cisco Systems, charged with overseeing engineering, marketing, operations and service organizations. The announcement comes two weeks after CEO John Chambers pledged that the company would improve its operational focus.

Male-oriented online video publisher Break Media is announcing a new slate of 5 original web series today, developed by the company’s in-house Creative Lab – which says it’s on pace to crank out more than 1,000 original videos in 2011. (Remember, the company formed the group after acquiring the web video-focused HBOlab in 2009.) Break’s strategy is use thematically consistent original video productions to drive traffic to corresponding web sites by distributing them far and wide across YouTube, its mobile apps and its 125 million-user ad network. The slate begins with how to series “For the Win” for Lifestyle site Man Made premiering today, instructing men on basics such as how to master the grill or how to ask your boss for a raise. The other shows rolling out across Break sites this spring include “Awesome America” on the flagship Break.com, a celebration of the weird and wacky; “Thinking Out Loud” on Screen Junkies, which features correspondents’ fantasized inner monologues at press conferences; MMA sports show MMAshed Potato on Cage Potato; and gaming tip show FAQ U on Game Front.
