NBC Digital Entertainment announced plans to begin streaming full episodes of vintage TV shows this month for free on NBC.com and select NBC Cable Entertainment sites. Included among the classics, look for The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and Night Gallery on NBC.com, the original Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers on SciFi.com, Swamp Thing and Crow on ChillerTV.com and Kojak and Miami Vice on SleuthChannel.com.
NBC clarified things vis-a-vis the Upfronts. The network will forgo its usual dog and pony show and instead schedule a series of one-on-one client meetings in New York, LA and Chicago, culminating in an event on May 12 in Manhattan that will showcase the “platforms and capabilities” of the NBC group as a whole. Digital properties, out of home assets, wireless and mobile offerings will be emphasized as integral parts of integrated campaigns in this new “customer-first” approach.
Turner Sports said over 1 million text message votes were received during the NBA All Star Weekend Slam Dunk contest, with 78% of the fans choosing eventual champion Dwight Howard. Over 61,000 fans voted for the All-Star Access isolated camera feature.
ABC-managed Oscar.com is increasing its video coverage of the Academy Awards show next Sunday, with more behind-the-scenes interviews, interactive features and even a user-generated feature encouraging fans to upload their own acceptance speeches.
AmateurGourmet.com blogger Adam Roberts is starring in a new online series called The FN Dish for Scripps’ FoodNetwork.com.
The Crystal Light beverage brand launched uPumpitUp.com, a wellness-themed social networking site targeting women with actress Mandy Moore as partner and spokesperson. The site features expert instructional videos presented as overlays who pose open self help challenges to the community.
Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE signed an agreement to distribute the winning entries from this year’s South by Southwest Greenlight Awards, given by ON Networks to the Best Original Digital Production and Best Original Digital Series.
National Lampoon signed a revenue-sharing content partnership with DailyMotion to provide comedy programming to the video sharing site, the first partner to take advantage of DailyMotion’s new HD video player.
Last Comic Standing veteran Todd Glass launched an online talent show called BigShotLive, allowing contestants to upload auditions in modeling, acting, dancing, singing, comedy, sports tricks and TV hosting.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
Toshiba officially pulled the plug on the HD-DVD format, aiming for cessation of player shipments by the end of March 2008. About 1 million players have been sold worldwide to date, including Xbox 360 game consoles and another 700,000 HD DVD drives have been sold for PCs.
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates indicated that his company would combat Google’s search empire by investing in engineering and marketing in an interview with Reuters, a move it would make “with our without” Yahoo.
Online content delivery network Limelight Networks reported Q4 revenues of $29.1 million, up 31% from a year ago, but also revealed expanded net losses of $6.2 million from $4.9 million in Q4 of 2006. The company actually blamed the Writers’ strike in a conference call with analysts, despite the conventional wisdom that online video consumption increased during the period. Limelight added 200 new customers during the fourth quarter but suffered in a price war with rivals such as Akamai, as it was forced to lower the costs of streaming video for its content clients.
Verizon is in the enviable position of having demand for its HD FiOS TV service outstrip supply of set-top boxes it gets from Motorola, reports The Wall Street Journal.
GoFish Corporation launched an entertainment distribution network aimed at kids and young adults. The GoFish Youth Entertainment Network combines GoFish.com with Miniclip.com, CartoonDollEmporium.com, Cookie Jar Entertainment, GameGecko.com, Hallpass.com, Piczo.com, Whyville.net, Arcadetown.com and Flowgo.com. Charter advertisers include Activision, Cartoon Network, Disney, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony and Verizon Wireless.
Online video viewing is helping to create a new entertainment medium for younger viewers rather than steering them away from television, according to new study by New Hampshire-based Leichtman Research Group. Among viewers aged 18-34, 42% reported that they watch video online at home at least weekly – up from 28% last year – but only 9% of all online video viewers surveyed claimed they watch TV less often as a result of their new habits.
Half of all music sold in the US will be digital in 2011, and sales of digitally downloaded music will surpass physical CD sales by 2012, according to a new report by Forrester Research. Accelerated MP3 player adoption, DRM-free music availability and the growth of music sales on social networking will help drive digital music sales at a compound annual growth rate of 23% over the next five years, reaching $4.8 billion in revenue by 2012. But it will fail to make up for the continuing steady decline in CD sales. In 2012, CD sales will be reduced to just $3.8 billion.
NBCU‘s Digital Distribution division made three promotions: Jennifer Boudreaux has been upped to VP/Sales Business Development, Chip Canter was promoted to VP/Wireless Platform Development and Michael Schreiber will assume the post of VP/Sales Business Development.
National Geographic appointed Charles Regan as VP of its Digital Mapping Business. He reports to Paul Levine, SVP/NGGM Corporate Strategy, Development and Extended Platforms and joins National Geographic after ten years with Maps.com.
Sony Pictures Television International named Spencer Hunt to the newly created position of VP/Game Production and Digital Product Development. Based at SPTI headquarters in Culver City, CA, he will report to Marie Jacobson, EVP/Programming and Production, International Networks, managing development and implementation of games strategy and game-derivative video content for multiple screens globally. Spencer was previously the Executive Director/Production for Sony Online Entertainment and Sony Pictures Digital.
Hulu CEO Jason Kilar will present the keynote address during the NAB Show on Wed. April 16. The choice is consistent with NAB’s effort to transition from broadcasting to more of a multiplatform focus. The show will also debut an IPTV pavilion this year, to go along with its second annual telecom-themed side conference focusing on IPTV carrier and content issues.
Wenda Harris Millard, President of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, joined the Board of Directors of ContextWeb, Inc., operator of the ADSAQ ad exchange.
