~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

The CW announced early pick-ups of five of its series for next season including the dramas The Vampire Diaries, averaging a 2.5/8 among A18-34 and 4.6 million total viewers; Supernatural going into its sixth season next year; as well as Gossip Girl and 90210. The CW also gave a nod to its Wednesday night staple, reality series America’s Next Top Model which will return for cycles 15 and 16.

FX decided to match up its new comedy series Louie with its drama Rescue Me starting in June, though the specific start date was not announced. Rescue Me will air at 10p prior to Louie at 11p. Louie was originally scheduled to premiere in April.

HGTV is rolling out a total of 14 new series this year, six of which will debut in primetime next month:

  • Tough as Nails – Weekly docu-drama focusing on Boston developer Cindy Stumpo as she runs a successful construction business while managing her family life. Premieres March 14 at 11p.
  • Home Rules – Life coach and previous WNBA player Fran Harris will counsel a family who is struggling to find harmony at home. Fran will help ease the stress while a designer offers a new space design within the home. Premieres March 15 at 9p.
  • Marriage Under Construction – Previously announced new series following newlyweds Natalie and Rod, as they buy, renovate and decorate their first home. Premieres March 16 at 11p.
  • My First Sale – Each episode highlights a different first-time home seller as they navigate today’s challenging real estate market. Premieres March 18 at 830p.
  • Selling New York – Weekly series will give viewers a glimpse inside the competitive NYC real estate market where luxurious Manhattan properties are bought and sold. Premieres March 18 at 9p.

HGTV also has one new daytime series coming in March:

  • Destination Design – Designer Taniya Nayak works with homeowners who love to travel though need help with design at home. She sends them on an all-expenses paid luxury vacation to find colors, textures, images and memories that will inspire unique designs for their homes. Premieres March 6 at 130p.

Spike TV is moving its weekly wrestling series TNA iMPACT! from Thursday nights to Mondays, starting March 8 at 9p with a live episode. Spike TV will air live telecasts of the series every other week, spotlighting some of the most well-known names in wrestling such as Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair and Mike Foley among others.

BET brings back its singing competition series Sunday Best for a third season, premiering April 4. The series, hosted by gospel singer Kirk Franklin with judges Pastor Donnie McClurkin, Yolanda Adams and singer sister duo Erica and Tina Campbell, opened its 10-week competition with its first-ever international auditions in West Africa. In addition, Sunday Best will host three upcoming auditions in the US: in Detroit on February 20; New Orleans on February 27; and Philadelphia on March 6. Syfy and World Wrestling Entertainment are partnering to premiere a new reality/event show, WWE NXT, opening February 23 at 10p. The show features eight top WWE Superstars as they mentor eight WWE Rookies as they show them the business.

ION Television premieres its original series The Guard for the first time in the US on March 13 at 9p, over a two-hour block of back-to-back 60m episodes. The series follows four members of the Canadian Coast Guard Search and Rescue Team as they endanger their own lives to save others. ION Television acquired the series, produced by Halifax Films and Brightlight Pictures, from Lionsgate. The Guard will air on ION Television with two one-hour episodes back-to-back at 9p every Saturday night.

MTV2 presents a weekly four-hour block called Rock N Jock Saturdays, each Saturday at 11a, combining new music with sports clips. Hosted by Todd Richards and Dirty, the block will begin with Rock N Jock Countdown followed by Winter Dew Tour: Mount Snow at noon and the two-hour Pros vs. Joes at 1p.

The Style Network’s third season debut of Ruby on February 14 at 8p posted a 0.46 rating among W18-49 as well as 383,000 total viewers.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Sony Pictures Television and Harpo Productions have sold the daytime talk program The Dr. Oz Show to numerous regions outside the US. The US version of The Dr. Oz Show was picked up by broadcasters in 82 territories including Korea, Hungary, Latin America, the Middle East, New Zealand, Romania, Russia and Turkey. The format was also licensed to MBC in the Middle East and to Rossiya in Russia.

The Documentary Channel (DOC) made an exclusive multi-year deal with The Film Sales Company involving a package of 11 documentary films from The Film Sales Company’s library. The deal covers such titles as Body of War, Jump!, High Score and The Trials of Michael Jackson. DOC will open with the Academy Award nominee film Iraq In Fragments on March 29 at 8p.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Long-time soap actor David Canary, famous for playing the roles of twins Adam and Stuart Chandler on ABC’s All My Children, announced he is retiring from the show. Canary began with AMC in 1983 and over the years won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor five times in 1988, 1989, 1993, 1995 and 2001. Canary will continue on AMC through April, where his character Adam will end his current marriage to Annie, played by Melissa Claire Egan and reunite with one of his former ex-wives. Though he will soon leave AMC, Canary said in his parting statement, “This is not the last you’ve seen of Adam Chandler. I will be back to check up on the Chandler Clan.”

CBS’ upcoming remake of Hawaii Five-O cast Taryn Manning in the regular role as Det. Steve McGarrett’s younger sister, Mary Ann. The series has already announced Alex O’Loughlin will play McGarrett who is also joined by Daniel Dae Kim (Lost).

  • Michelle Borth was tapped to play the female lead in ABC’s drama The Matadors from Sony TV. The Matadors is a second position gig for Borth who currently stars on ABC’s The Forgotten. Also, Jonathan Scarfe landed a lead role in The Matadors.
  • Amy Smart will play a starring role in CBS’ untitled medical drama from John Wells;
  • Beau Garrett will take on the female lead in CBS’ Criminal Minds spin-off;
  • Brian Dennehy will star opposite Dana Gould in ABC’s untitled Gould project from Warner Bros. Television; and
  • Sullivan Stapleton will play the lead in CBS’ multi-camera comedy pilot The Odds.

Casting Call: Original Productions, the production company behind Discovery Channel’s series The Colony, is casting for the show’s second season. Casting directors are looking for skilled professionals who are willing to participate in a social experiment over a 60-day period. Open casting calls will take place this Saturday at the Fairfield Commons Mall in Dayton; Denver Pavilions in Denver; and The Galleria in Houston from 11a-7p. Friday A18-49 Analysis: NBC basked in the glow of being #1 Friday night at 9.4/27 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, NBC’s Opening Ceremony telecast of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics topped with a 7.7/23 followed by UNIV’s Hasta Dinero Separe at 1.5/5. NBC’s Olympics continued to wow through 9p with a 10.3/29 while UNIV was second again with Sortilegio at 2.0/6. NBC’s Olympics coverage finished the night a winner during 10p at 10.2/29 and ABC’s movie and UNIV’s La Rosa de Guadalupe tied at #2 with 1.0/3 each.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Gary Schneider has become President/GM of KTVT-KTXA/Dallas-Fort Worth, owned by CBS. Gary, who reports to Peter Dunn, President, CBS Television Stations, previously served as SVP/Station Manager of the stations since August 2004 and later became GM in December 2009, following the departure of Steve Mauldin who was appointed President/GM of KCBS-KCAL/Los Angeles, also owned by CBS.   Well done Gary!

Frantic Films added three development executives to its management team: Anne-Marie Varner and Alberta Nokes join as VP/Development in the factual division in the company’s Toronto office; and Melissa Kaipust was appointed Executive in Charge/Development with Scripted Programming in Frantic Films’ Winnipeg office.

Susan Sheppard was hired by RHI Entertainment as SVP/Business and Legal Affairs where she will be supervise business and legal affairs for the creation and production of movies for television, miniseries and series. Susan will report to Henry Hoberman, EVP/General Counsel and Secretary. Most recently, Susan was SVP/Business and Legal Affairs for BBC Worldwide America.

Former MTV Networks executive Kelli Callanan was named VP/Marketing at iVillage. Kelli will head the marketing group in the development of custom campaigns for partners as well as branding efforts. At iVillage, Kelli will report to Catherine Balsam-Schwaber, SVP/Marketing.

NESN elevated Ray Guilbault to COO/CFO up from EVP/CFO and Vanessa Brown to VP/Human Resources and Organizational Development up from Director/Human Resources.
