To satisfy increasing demand from the magazine and newspaper sector, Apple has rolled out a new subscription service for the iPad offering the same 70/30 revenue split given by Amazon for Kindle subscriptions. In a new compromise with publishers, the company has agreed to allow newspapers and magazines to offer digital subscriptions outside of the app without collecting its royalty cut; for instance as a free add on for existing subscribers or directly through publishers’ sites. Publishers will also be allowed to select the price and length of the subscription term. The news could position Apple to dominate the digital subscription business at least in the short term, as the iPad currently enjoys a 75% market share in the tablet space.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Leading brick-and-mortar bookseller Barnes & Noble issued an open letter urging local Amazon affiliates to join its online program that compensates individual sites for driving purchases to the BN.com site. Amazon has been cutting ties with affiliates in several states including Colorado, Rhode Island and North Carolina in its battles to avoid paying state taxes.
 
CNN has created an awards ceremony for its troupe of over 700k citizen reporters. The first annual CNN iReport Awards, nominated by a team of CNN journalists and producers, will be granted in six categories: Breaking News, Original Reporting, Compelling Imagery (photos or video), Commentary, Personal Story, and Interview. Online voting will be also held for the Community Choice category. Winners will be announced on March 15.
 
NHL team The New Jersey Devils is launching its “Mission Control” digital command center this afternoon – a hub located in the Prudential Center in Newark encouraging fans to drop in to send and receive social messaging about the team. In more NHL news, the league dropped the price of its NHL Gamecenter Live streaming service to $79 for the rest of the season. (Because almost every team makes the hockey playoffs, 25 of the 30 NHL clubs are still in the race for the Stanley Cup.)
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
The long wait is over for Boxee fans – the Netflix app enabling Boxee Box owners to view Netflix streaming video titles on their televisions has finally arrived.
 
Howcast Studios has produced a new web series called “Party Builders” taking a look into successful events and the people who plan them. The show premiers today with new episodes appearing every Wednesday.
 
How are your virtual ping-pong skills? BackSpin 2011 is an Xbox Kinect-powered ping-pong tournament being held on Saturday, Feb. 26 at General Assembly on Broadway to benefit Child’s Play, a non-profit that provides books, games and consoles to children in hospitals.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Kids-targeted web browser creator Kidzui introduced a new ad platform to go along with its browser with some of the same safeguards applied to the content featured on the site. Offers in the form of coupons, click-throughs and promotional messages are contextually matched to kids’ interests then parents are notified via an email once kids “Like” sponsored content.
 
Social data-driven ad network RadiumOne has also added Facebook-inspired “Like” buttons to its network in a ploy to make ads more social. When a user clicks on the “Share” button, a small window pops up that will allow the consumer to share the ad through Facebook, Twitter, e-mail and other social media channels. The system then taps into the data people share to match ads with the appropriate audience.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Qualcomm struck a deal with Netflix to enable handsets that run on Google’s Android operating system to playback Netflix’s streaming video. Streaming will be possible on handsets installed with the Snapdragon system-on-a-chip platform.
 
The FCC’s plan to provide incentives for TV stations to auction off unneeded spectrum could raise $33 billion or more for the U.S. treasury, according to a new whitepaper released jointly by the CTIA and the CEA. The groups estimated that $565 million raised by the incentive auctions would go to help relocate or “repack” TV channels that voluntarily give up their spectrum, pegging the business enterprise value of the spectrum auctioned by TV stations at $1.2 billion to $2.3 billion. 
 
Cablevision signed a deal with Rovi to license Rovi’s interactive program guide (IPG) intellectual property. The agreement includes a multi-year license for next-generation set-top boxes as well as online and mobile platforms.
 
Emerging TV network Outdoor Channel has added MyOutdoorTV.com to its portfolio of sites, online provider of hunting, fishing and shooting content. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Smartphone adoption increased in both the U.S. and Europe last year, reaching 27% penetration in the U.S. and 31% adoption in Europe, both 10% increases from a year ago, according to ComScore. Network quality and cost of monthly plan were the top 2 purchase consideration factors for mobile subscribers in both regions. Nokia was the top OEM in the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain, while Samsung took the top spot in the U.S. and France, and also ranked in the top three in the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain. Other findings from ComScore’s Mobile Year in Review included:

  • 36% of mobile Americans and 29% of Europeans browsed the mobile web in Dec. 2010, with access through an app reaching 34% of Americans and 28% of Europeans. Mobile browsing and application usage is growing in the range of 7-9 percentage points per year
  • More than 75% of mobile subscribers in Japan are connected media users (used their browser, accessed applications or downloaded content.) Japan also saw nearly 10% of its mobile audience make a purchase with their mobile wallet in Dec. 2010

 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~
 

 
Taiwanese handset maker HTC unveiled a pair of smartphones, the ChaCha and the Salsa, equipped with “Facebook buttons” enabling one-click sharing of content including photos, websites, music and check-ins to the subscriber’s profile page.
 
The company also unveiled its first tablet – the HTC Flyer, an aluminum shielded device that includes both a stylus pen and a touchscreen. The 1.5 GHz processor Flyer, set to launch during Q2, is built around a “Scribe” technology that engineers shortcuts and enhancements into the act of jotting down notes. For instance, a feature called Timemark enables you to capture the audio of a meeting in line with your written notes, so tapping on a word in your notes instantly takes you to that exact place in time in the audio recording of the meeting. The device will also launch with a major studio-supplied streaming video service and a cloud-based mobile gaming service built with OnLive.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
MWW Group has hired former Edelman Creative Director Jared Hendler as EVP, Global Director of Digital and Creative Services. Jared will be based in the firm’s East Rutherford, NJ headquarters and oversee its Dialogue Digital practice.
 
Former Kontera executive Bryan Everett has been tapped as EVP/Business Development and Ludic Labs co-founder Ed Haslam to SVP/Marketing for YuMe‘s video platform and network.
 
Kids media industry veteran Bryan Mullen joined San Diego-based Kidzui as Chief Revenue Officer.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Hulu has made a deal that greatly bolsters the value of the $8/month Hulu Plus subscription service, particularly if you’re a cinephile. A selection of 150 movies from pedigreed home video label The Criterion Collection has been added to the Hulu Library from the likes of Bergman, Fellini, Kurosawa, Ozu, Renoir, Truffaut and Welles with more to come each month. Movie fanatics won’t have enough to go on here to convince them to cancel their Netflix subscriptions, but Hulu is clearly reaching out to serious audiences with plans to add the commentaries, interviews, essays and other extras to the films that Criterion is so well known for. Hulu SVP/Audience Eugene Wei (ironically) gives a shout out to Seattle’s legendary Scarecrow Video in his blog post about the offering – ironic because it is online services such as Hulu that are killing local video stores. (To be fair, Scarecrow, which boasts one of the world’s most extensive home video selections to rent on formats including laser disc, has survived the onslaught just fine. Seattle folks are willing to go out of their way to support such a local treasure.)
