Good morning, it’s Wednesday, February 13, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Writers, pick up your pens! Hollywood writers are satisfied they will at least get a seat at the table if studios begin feasting on revenues from digital platforms. Members of both the East and West wings of the WGA (92.5% of the 3,775 who voted, to be exact) voted overwhelmingly to ratify the deal hammered out by the guild’s governing boards over the weekend, offering writers mostly flat fees in these early days online distribution. One thing seems certain – if big money does start to come pouring in from streamed shows and movies there will be another showdown three years from now.
NBCU’s Mun2 developed a half hour series premiering on Thursday at 9 pm ET based on content from its website holamun2.com. Host Renato Lopez, who looks at the camera a lot like most web hosts, takes viewers through multicultural skits, interviews and interactive features designed to appeal to web savvy young acculturated Latinos.
IFC.com will launch its first-ever daily web series “Lunchbox” on March 10 during the 2008 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film and Music Festival, which the network and site will cover extensively again this year. Lunchbox, an online news magazine covering trends in music, film, culture and politics, will coincide with the re-launch of IFC.com and air every weekday on IFC at 12pm ET/PT.
Gamers may interested to know that Electronic Arts officially confirmed the release of the highly anticipated but long delayed Spore on Sept. 7, simultaneously on PC, Mac, Nintendo DS and mobile.
ABC.com is sharing the love with digital Valentines Day cards featuring photos of the stars from hit shows Lost, Grey’s Anatomy and Ugly Betty. The site has also put together a series of video montages of some of the shows’ steamier scenes.
Ebert & Roeper‘s annual If We Picked the Winners special is showing exclusively online this year at AtTheMovies.com and on ticket purchasing site Fandango.com.
Outdoor Channel secured digital carriage in WideOpenWest’s Chicago, Detroit, Columbus and Cleveland markets.
Massify.com is hosting The Ghosts in the Machine contest to help After Dark Films develop a feature length horror film entirely on the internet. Massify offers tools to create and submit story ideas and audition for the movie. One filmmaker will be selected to produce, and four actors will have the chance to star based on community input.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
The kid gloves are off. Microsoft has hired proxy solicitation firm Innisfree in anticipation of a bloody battle to replace Yahoo‘s board, reported The New York Post. Innisfree agents have been calling Yahoo! shareholders to gage how they feel about a takeover bid.
Yahoo officially acquired broadband video company Maven Networks for $160 million. Yahoo intends on combing its display sales force and Panama platform with Maven’s online video platform, which offers HD video hosting, distribution and video advertising.
Yahoo also unveiled a new mobile search tool called oneSearch built on an open architecture that aggregates email, IM, SMS and social networking tools with an integrated address book. T-Mobile signed on to offer the service across its European footprint beginning at the end of March ’08.
The iPhone will soon be able to support Adobe’s Flash format, according to Gearlive.com, opening it up to a world of online video content. So far only low quality H.264-formatted video has been viewable.
ThePlatform signed a deal to manage and syndicate online videos for Corus Entertainment, its first Canadian client. Corus’s holdings include kid-themed TreehouseTV and women-targeted WNetwork.
CTAM is conducting a TeleSeminar on Feb. 20 at 12 noon ET to give cable and content executives tips on how to approach the digital transition, to be delivered via satellite to local CTAM chapters.
Animation Collective is producing a series of web toons for Johnson & Johnson to promote its Baby Lotion, featuring the Law & Order: SVU’s Mariska Hargitay as the voice of the baby. Each one-to-two minute short focuses on the mother/child bonding experience, and how that emotional tie is facilitated with a mother’s loving touch while using the product.
Nielsen will begin measuring TV viewing on the PC as part of its regular TV ratings panel by the end of 2008, reports AdAge, the first step toward integrating measurement of the two platforms on a single report. However, so far only half of the eligible households in Nielsen’s sample have agreed to internet measurement.
Multimedia platforms will capture $12.6 billion in ad revenue by 2012 according to a new report from Parks Associates, with broadband revenues accounting for more than $6.6 billion of that total.
A small group of “Natural Born Clickers,” who make up just 6% of the online population, account for 50% of all display click ads, according to a new study from Starcom, Tacoda and comScore. Don’t they have anything better to do?
A new study by Centris of U.S. television households reveals serious “gaps” in digital over-the-air TV signal coverage across the country. Centris examined several large TV markets and exercised models of coverage to determine how many broadcast stations could be received in zip codes within 5-mile intervals of the TV towers in a 60-75 mile radius, corresponding to the FCC-identified service contours. Results revealed little continuous coverage beyond 35 miles.

AtomicOnline appointed former Heavy.com programming executive Madison Wharton as Director of Programming & Development and former Maxim marketing veteran Brian Williamson as Sr. Marketing Manager.
The folks at New York-based Fluid and the Boom Design Group have come up with one of those cool, immersive website designs for unscrewamerica.org. No, it’s not a political site – it’s an integrated campaign developed by Austin-based GSD&M’s Idea City and producer Lesley Chilcott (An Inconvenient Truth) to encourage consumers to replace their old school screw light bulbs with energy efficient CFLs and LEDs. Three :30 Unscrew America PSAs will accompany the site, beginning to air on Friday in major markets. Incidentally, Austin recently committed to deploying LED fixtures across all municipal infrastructures, joining Toronto, Raleigh, NC and Ann Arbor, MI.
